Spreadsheet options - are there any?

I know this is really more of a "words" topic as it's not strictly internet, but ... I use spreadsheets a lot to help me plan my workload. At the moment I'm using a canibalised Office Works template I got with my PC package - it's great, except that it's really meant for inputting figures, whereas my stuff is a mix of numbers and words. Are there any spreadsheet options that allow you to add highlights, different colour text etc? It would make my life a lot easier. I'm searching for a straight forward spreadsheet option like excel, that can be heavily customised. I know some people do this kind of thing as Internet downloads, but maybe if you know of one you can post a link? Thanx.
