Now I am a fan of Barrack but I am wondering if his getting this prize is justified. My reason for saying that he is just functioning in his capacity as president of America and therefore he would always be in a position to perform these so called peace initiatives ,consequently I odnt think he has done anything that is outside his scope . In addition where are the peace intiatives on which this determination is based .In fact he is currently the commander of two wars one in Iraq and another in Afghanistan. In fact he is currently thinking of deploying about forty thousand more troops .Consequently I think that this is just another display of his immense popularity and brilliant rhetoric but not on any action. I suppose though that this just represent a continuation in the trend to give presidents and vice presidents becasue last year it was the Finnish president and before that ex vice president Al Gore . So what do you think is President deserving of this award or just another jewel in his popularity machinery ?

I do not think he deserves it in the least. First, the nominations had to be in by February. He'd been president, what, about two weeks! Give me a break. I read the list of nominees...some ACTUALLY did something to deserve being nominated. I wonder how they feel being upstaged by a man who's done NOTHING for peace but continue on with Bush's agenda in Iraq and Afaganistan? Oh and lie about pulling troops out...and sending MORE in?

I feel that it's too soon, or it's unfair. Just because you're famous doesn't mean that you automatically get the gold medal. It takes a certain something, a certain skill to earn a prize like that. Others like the Dalai Lama had years to earn something like that. It takes more than luck, fame or fortune. It takes a certain something that makes the bad things worth it to earn it. It does take talent, skill or something else to earn the Nobel Peace Prize. I feel that it's too soon because Obama's been in the White House for over 9 months, or that it's unfair because there are other worthy, deserving candidates that deserve it more than him. http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/

The only award I would give to Obama would be "World's Master Illusionist" All his changes and promises for the USA seem real but they are just illusions. He has a full house to all his performances with awed believing audiences who do yet grasp the fact they are just pipe dreams.

Yes I will admit that he is brilliant at his oratory but has yet to deliver on many of his promises .Dont get me wrong I don't doubt his sincerity but I think he needs more time to fulfill some of his promises

I think its just a way for them to add another medal to there highest honor so to speak and rolling eyes at the same time. what you need to understand is that they probably gave it to him because he's black and the president and he's the first black president. I wouldn't say this about him on a personal level, but you have to think as to what he has actually accomplished while he has been in office and hasn't been that much. Why not wait for three years and see what he has done when his term is almost over then we will see if he would be deserving of it.

Our local newspaper summed it up as: winning the first prize even before taking the test! I think this is the most preposterous Nobel announcement I have come across. Keeping in mind the years of hard toil all the winners go thru and their continued dedication to their chosen field and also their expertise and proven track record, its really a big surprise that Obama got the Nobel only on the basis of his promise so far and not on his delivery. If rewarding him just to boost his morale is enough, there are others too who promise so many things but cant live upto the expectations. Or maybe the Noble Prize Committee is being overtly politically correct.

I am not an American and therefore I am not commenting on Obama's role of President. However, I have always thought - and I think rightly - that the Nobel Prize is given for ACHIEVEMENT not for desire, potential or even attempts. As far as I can see, Obama has not ACHIEVED anything yet and certainly had not done so at the time of nominations. We have some very great athletes, some of whom have missed out on an Olympic gold medal through accident and/or injury. We do NOT award them an Olympic gold medal for their potential, for their efforts in the run-up to the Olympics, or for any other reason than ACTUALLY ACHIEVING in the Olympic event. I have no option but to think that awarding the Nobel Prize to President Obama (whether or not he has worked TOWARDS achieving peace) is WRONG and belittles the prestige of the Nobel Prize.

It seems to me that this award is motivated by politics more than anything else. Perhaps by awarding him the peace prize they are trying to influence his decision making. It's certainly not justified by what he has done, it's supposed to be awarded to people who have actually made a contribution a real peace, whereas all that he has done so far is to make promises. Since he's only nine months into his administration, that's not a surprise though. They would have been better off waiting until his last year of office before deciding if his record justified this award.

barack obama is a great speaker he could just melt anyone with his speech but it is just too early to get this award it is like giving a scholarship to a baby which has just spoken.. He is a great man and needs time to prove his consistency. May be got this award for the deeds he is going to do in the future

I think that media hype has a lot to do with unwarranted honors being heaped upon high profile people that don't deserve them. Personally I don't think he has done anything extraordinary enough to earn the Nobel peace prize or any other prize for that matter.

Hello my friend ronnyb Ji, I think, those who gave him must have got something in return from Obama. In fact, he should return the same. After he became, he has never visited our country, which is badly hit by neighbouring country, he could not solve this problem, instead he is still funding them in direct/indirect ways. May god bless You and have a graet time.

I dont want to offend anyone but my opinion is that both barrack obama and gordan brown have made a shambles and a mockery of our two great countrys and will nevcer change my opinion of either of them, They tread on eggshells around people that dont matter and dont give a dam about what their people actually think, In england tony blair has stuffed our great country and gordan brown has carried on with his idiotic work!!! we have less money! we are deeply in recession whilst the the goverement run round spending our taxes on their luxury life styles, I do not back the war with iraq as i do not believe in our boys dying for people who just do not want our help in any shape or form!! I though that to get a nobel peace prize you actually have to get off your backside and make peace with other people not cause more war??? ludicrous if you ask me!!

Hi ronnyb, I think that it is justifiable as he is clearly a man who is seeking peace. He has held out the hand of friendship to many countries, he has offered to talk peace with the President of Iran and believes in open dialogue with friend and foe alike. His plan is to withdraw American troops from Iraq but this takes time and can't be done immediately. I don't agree with his stand on Afghanistan but I'm sure he has a better knowledge of the situation than I do. While I detest war, I feel that he has to believe that a lasting peace is achievable there. Blessings.
