Rasam is a soup like Indian food item. It is made out of tamarind juice, cumin, pepper powders with or without tomatoes. Lemon juice can be added and also little ginger if we want. It is very good for health, digestion. After recovery from illness like cold, fever, when doctor prescribes give light food, we take rasam mixed with white rice. This can be taken as soup for appetite. To start solid food to children, usually we give rasam rice to children with little ghee added to the rice. 90% of Indians are fans of this food item and a function is not complete without Rasam rice. Have you tasted it? Do you like it? If not tasted, please learn through internet, make (easy to make) and I am sure you will become fan of it. Please try and tell friend whether you liked the taste.

Hotsummer! This rasam is a simple preparation but many of the restaurants do not serve good rasam. It is a cuisine specific to South India and the south Indian hotels make decent rasam.Even in hostels of educational institutions I have tasted thsi rasam and those thta are supposed to be very good do not come up to standard .It is drunk as soup by many people .North Indians like a thick versin of thsi and they call it dhal and rasam is a dilute soup.THere are umpteen varieties and there are special delicacies like Pineapple rasam too.

It is certainly appetizer. You can make different rasams for different sickness. For ex. with rasam powder and tomato, it is normal appetizer. You can either drink as it is or mix in rice. If you add little ghee to the rice nothing to beat. You can take only the clear upward rasam or thick down portion of the rasam in the vessel or mix it and take. They differ in taste. Then you make rasam only with cumin and black pepper powder, it is good for stomach problem and cold. Make lemon rasam, that is good for gas and digestion.

yes, I have heard of the curative properties of Rasam but have never tasted it. Actually I feel that we Bengalis have a lot of difference in food habits from the rest of India. I have heard that rasam is both sour and hot and it is this tangy hot taste that cures the body of many illness, including common cold. However, most Bengalis don’t like either too sour or too hot taste and I am no exception. Here in Calcutta I think rasam would be available at typical south Indian eateries but though I love dosa and uttapam, I have never asked for rasam. I don’t even like sambar because of its sour taste…I love the coconut chutney, though!

actually this country of ours is so vast and diverse and each region has its own distinct flavour and taste which visitors can never forget. So next time I go to a south Indian eatery, do I ask for a bowl of rasam? if they ask for flavour, what do I say? Plain rasam?

You just taste and see. However there are about 20 types of rasams, like tomato rasam, ginger rasam, cumin and black pepper rasam, pudina rasam, mango rasam, lemon rasam etc. etc. Just to know the taste you try any rasam. Thanks for the detailed response. I like Calcutta sweets like santosh and other sweets made out of rice flour etc. Whenever children go to Calcutta, they bring Calcutta special sweets for me. Name I keep forgetting but taste I cannot.

Usually hotels will be preparing tomato rasam which is an appetizer. You can drink it or mix it in rice. Only at home, we make other types of rasams as per requirement or different taste.

Buchi Bulla ! Which Indian would not love rasam? I am supposed to make very good rasam and this is a particular favourite of my father-in-law and my son .My son's friends too love this.If thIS friend is a North Indian , he prefers to drink it plain but South Indian friends love having it with rice.As far as Iam concerned I cannot live without it because our staple food is rice and Rasam is a compulsory dish every day.

You are right. Many Indians know Rasam, whether they make at home or not as they would have tasted it outside, outstation, in friend's house, somewhere. Tasty coupled with healthy recipe, is loved by many.

I have never tried it before but I will definitely look it up as it sounds very nice. My favourite indian food at the moment is lamb biryani - I get it every time I go to an indian restuarant, then I love naan bread plain and garkic, I also like chapati (roti) and then my next best is chicken korma - all delicious.

Vav, all good items you are selecting and eating. Then do not leave Rasam. This will do away all the collastral and gas formation in the stomach and will increase appetite.

Hi Buchi, I believe rasam is a yummy soup though I haven’t tasted it before. Lol I think I should find out from the Indian stalls or restaurants to see whether there is such type of soup available there. From your description I come to know that rasam is such a beneficial soup to our health. Moreover it’s a good appetizer as well No wonder rasam rice is served when children start to take solid food. I already have a look on the image attached in response #9. I like soup or any other foods with sour taste. That’s why other than vinegar we like to keep some fresh tamarind paste in our kitchen. It’s an important ingredient in preparing many kinds of dishes. Actually tamarind is a leguminous plant. There was one big tamarind tree beside my house in my childhood. I liked eating the fresh ripe tamarind fresh from the tree. Its sour taste that carries some sweet savor is really delicious. It’s a good natural medicine to cure cough It works well if taking the juice when our throat feeling uncomfortable and begin to cough. Happy posting

In my childhood, we used to pound tamarind and salt together and make the mixed tamarind into big balls, fix it to stick and were licking it to get sour and salt taste. It was wonderful. The other day my daughter brought small chocolate like think and that happened to be what we were eating like lollypop in our childhood. Now it is coming in a chocolate form. After reading your post, I remembered that. Thanks. You have taken me to my nostalgic memory.

as i am an indian i know it much and favourite of it also.i make different rasam recipes in my house. i make lime rasam, tamarind rasam, dal rasam, pepper rasam ,ginger rasam, pudina rasam ,garlic rasam ,tamoto rasam, and i have also heard pinepple rasam, tamoto coconut rasam, mangalore rasam, mysore rasam ,madras rasam, neem rasam, jeera rasam ,apple rasam, curry leaves rasam ,beetroot rasam . i will try these also when i am free as i didn;t made them upto now . u also try all these rasam recipes. and last and final we telugu people make one rasam without cooking. that is called pachi pulusu made from tamarind juice, gur and salt, onion, and red chilli . as u told it is good for digestion and have more healh benefits.and it is used in functions also. if any function is there in my house,i make this rasam also. in winter season we can have hot rasam with rice or without rasam. we can drink it as it removes our coolness in our body. the tempering smell and aroma of rasam powder will sooth our body when we are lazy.

Yes Mr. Baluyadav, rasam clears the bowels easily. The combination you said, i.e. rasam rice and potato fry is too good. We also make at home. I do not know about non-veg as I am a vegetarian.

I've tried many types of Indian food and I really do think they are nice, though the cultire might be a bit strange as they don't use spoons and forks but let's look at the positives of the food. The food is really nice, very tasty, a bit spicey but usually with a great odour of herbs. I really like it.

There are umpteen varieties of dishes in Indian cooking both in vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. True. Many ingredients have herbal qualities and good for health. We eat with our fingers may be there is a reason for it. It may be good for finger exercises or any acupressure points are being toned up. I will have to find out about this.

Dear friend, In our place we have sadhya and we have Rasam moslty along with rice. I like it veryh much as Sabar. For me Rasam is a great combination with rice and it know that it is very good for digestion. If the taste of Rasam is good I would even only need Rasam and rice for my breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I am indian and i am from chennai. So i am quite familiar with rasam. I love it. Any lunch meal is not complete without a scoop of rasam with rice. But i prefer it in the soup way. Usually i eat rice with sambar and then curd. At last i have rasam in my plate and drink it as a soup since it is good for digestion..

In South India, almost everyday people prepare rasam. As you eat it, in the same way, many people, if not mixing in the rice, drink it as a soup.

I am from UP, India. When I went to Bangalore about 6 years back, I ate rasam rice for the first time. It tasted good very similar to sambar. I did not know that rasam is good for health as I am of the opinion that sour food is not good for health particularly if you have cold or fever. And I don't think it is the favorite food of 90% Indians as most of my family members have never had it. It maybe the favorite food of 90% South Indians.

I ate rasam in North Indian hotels too and my north Indian colleagues say they too like it. However there is difference between sambar and rasam. Sambar is solid with more tuwar dal whereas rasam is liquidy with little or no dal and cumin and pepper powder is added. In my house we add garlic too which is good for gas removal.

Give upper part of the rasam which is very thin and watery to your husband to drink. It makes us fresh and unnecessary water, gas will be removed from the stomach.
