Solar trash compactor

I was leaving the lunch room today and on my way out, I saw a trash can with a sign on it, "solar trash compactor". And I thought that was a really cool idea. Of course, it was just after high noon and the solar trash compactor was in the shade. Why? Well let's see, it's autumn, it was on the north side of the building and this time of year the sun passes to the south. So great idea, except why place it right up against the north side of a building where it's only going to get direct sun part of the year? What the heck were they thinking?

I'll join the others. I didn't know such a thing existed. How does it work? OK I know it is powered by the sun, but what, exactly, does it do? Being an Aussie, one thing immediately struck me - "the sun passes to the south". The sun is never on the south side here! I think you need to tell management - without calling them idiots of course! Or maybe you could just place a sign on the contraption "Help! Put me in the sun!"

Dawn, is there such a contraption? It isn't April Fool's Day in October is it?

Yep, I was figuring there'd be somebody stepping in making that observation about the southern hemisphere!

I will have to comment like kykid did. I didn't know that there was such as thing as solar trash compactor..I can see where that might be a neat ideal but who was the dummy that set it where it was...LOL..dawnald you need to put a sign on it that says...wrong side of the building for this thing to work...Have a nice evening..

That's probably the problem......no one was thinking......or planning ahead. I also think it's a good idea when it's properly run....

I'm sure it works really well in June, July and August!!!

I am trying to picture a trash can with solar panels? So, can you help me mentally visualize this? And tell me, how does one properly run such a thing?

I figured out why it was on the north side in the shade!!! Cause it is Oscar the Grouch's trash can and he hates sunshine!!!!

Wow, really? This is certainly a good go-green thing. I've never come across such a thing and it's definitely something that I would be interested to find out.

Just let me know when they put a solar paper shredder inside your dark cubicle at work, and there's not enough light to start it. lol

Probably that being in the shade is the clue. People often doesn't want to see anything related to trashes (except probably Trash Metal music ;) ) so that spot could be the most unmissable spot in your complex. Hey, they may even put the solar cell array on the roofs of your building so that trash compactor will still be powered!

Even if there were solar panels on the roof, they would have to be on the sunny side of the roof. The wires would have to go across the roof to the panel on the other side - a lot of trouble and expense to place it in such a spot. Maybe an Aussie is responsible for placing it there? It would be his natural instinct to put it on the north side.

Now that's a thought. Next time I go by there, I'll see if there are wires going up to the roof!

The roof is flat, so I guess it doesn't matter!

You know that is a great question. I bet nobody took that in to consideration when plcing it. Possibly write a note to corpate or if it is your work place, find out who handles that and put a suggestion in.

See above response, there is a possible answer. But I thought it was pretty funny...

It would be interesting to know how it works, but it does sound like someone failed to think about this principle before placing it in the shade.

I'm assuming it needs direct sunlight, but if it works with indirect sunlight I spose that might splain it...

Wow, I wasn't even aware that such a thing existed. A solar trash compactor is a great idea. I have a friend that needs one of those for Christmas, because she is always manually compacting her trash. And she has like no garbage for the garbage man because she recycles and composts almost everything that you can think of. She is such a green environment type person. And the one thing that I like about her is you see her doing it, but she doesn't go and brag about it like other people I know. These people try to be, but probably aren't nearly as eco-friendly to the earth as she is. Back to the subject at hand, I guess someone must not have thought about how the shade moves in after fall sets in. It sounds like you might want to point this out to the custodian, or some one who is in a management position in that building so that they realize it before it's too late.

It is a great idea, especially in California, it's just that having it in the shade struck me funny. I suppose facilities might be interested...

that's somebody unclear on the concept some really maximize the power they take in,but to that degree of out of the sun,it's kind of iffy.

Hi dawnald, I don't think they were thinking when they put it there without any thoughts whatsoever. Tamara

I have not heard of a solar trash compactor. It is hard to say why they put it on the north side of the building. They must not know how it works either.
