dear friends, excessive water intake are said to be harmful for elderly people, especially those with medical conditions. in some instances, certain people, such as endurance athletes, may flood their bodies with too much liquid, causing a potentially fatal condition called hyponatremia, a lack of sodium in the blood caused by excessive sweating, persistent diarrhea, or overuse of diuretic drugs. each individual fluid needs may vary. in the absence of prostate trouble or urinary incontinence, the pesky problem of chronic trips to the bathroom is a common bane for people who overdo it with fluid intake and could be a sign that you're getting more than you need. how much do you think is the right amount of water intake everyday? ann

HI Ann, It is advisable to drink at least 8 glasses of water in a day. For myself, I don't really go calculate whether I do drink that much or not. As long as I feel thirsty, then I will have a drink, either plain water or some juices. I believe drink more water will be good to our health,as it can't avoid heatiness in our body. Especially for little kids who like to eat biscuits and drink lot of milk, it is good to drink plenty of water.

hi shia, i guess 8 glasses is not for everyone. there are people who doesnt move so much and they feel they dont need that much water. i know of someone who only drinks 4 to 5 glasses a day because he is inactive. he said he cant take more than that. what can you say about that? ann

the 8 to 10 glasses does take into consideration the soup and other liquid types of foods even such things as ice cream, just so we get that much water from all sources into our bodies. fruit juice, sodas, coffee, tea all contain water too.

Water is the most essential nutrient that our body needs. Your body is around forty to sixty percent of water. Forty to sixty percent of your body weight is water. Muscle composition is approximately 70% water. It is vital that while you exercise you continually drink water to ensure that your body does not dehydrate. If you feel thirsty it will take around 20 minutes for the liquid to be utilized by the body. Obviously the amount of water you need depends on your body weight, height and any activity you take part in but on average you need around three and a half pints of water a day. This may seem a lot but a lot of water will come from your food such as fruits which contain 75 to 90 percent of water.

Hi ann, I think different people have different ideas on this, and in my opinion it depends on several facters, such as weather conditions, energy levels, and I believe age comes into play also. When I was living and working in Thailand, I drank a lot more water than I do now in the cold conditions here at present in Australia, probably only about 20%. I don't know if that's enough. As for the right level, well I don't know. Mike.

Hi Ann. I've heard of the "water poisoning" that you mentioned. It used to be thought everyone should try to drink 8 full glasses of water each day, but there is a new Doctors Show here in the states. Mehmet Oz, a very respected professional. He recently said that since there is water content in almost all the foods we eat, that 3-4 glasses a day should be sufficient. I would say that the average individuals thirst is a good guide, too, as many of us DO get slightly dehydrated at times. But excess thirst and urination can indicate diabetes, so it's a bit tricky, yes? And some medications can also cause a dry mouth that wants extra water. Karen

hello karen, i agree that even 3-4 glasses is sufficient. water intake depends of each persons level of activities, and other factor such as weather. when a person is having a fever for example, it is advised for them to take more liquid like water and fruit juices to replace the water that evaporated away from the body due to the body heat. that way, they will not get dehydrated. thank you for sharing your opinion. cheers, ann

hi lindiebiz, in school that was what we were told to do - 8 glasses a day. but we were still very young then when it was taught. as we grow older we get to need water depending on our lifestyle and activities. you get the feeling of like vomiting if you force yourself to drink 8 glasses a day. so i guess, you only drink water enough to satisfy your thirst. never more. that is my opinion. thank you for sharing yours. ann

hi tigeraunt my doctor tells me that 8 to 10 glasses of water a day are all you need, that much keeps you hydrated without overdoing things, I am suffering fluid retention and am on diuretics and potassium and my doctor said not to let myself get dehydrated but to drink just the normal amount of water again 8 to 10 glasses a day. My doctor is a very good doctor so I abide by his advice.

Hello, I have and read that the average amount of water, the body should intake is eight glasses of water per day, and to be honest with you there are times when I think plenty of water where, I could not even to begin to tell you how much I intake, and on the other hand I'm drinking much less. what I encourage myself to do is drink water rather I'm thirsty of not, because water is very refreshing, thirt quinching and purifying. Happy My Lotting!

We all believe in the 8X8 rule where we should take 8 ounces of water 8 times a day. But it really should depend on our body's need. If we are active and we perspire excessively, then we should replenish the water that's lost. Water is also lost thru urination, vomitting, crying. Let us just make it a rule that for every water that is lost thru these, we should compensate. We can also base it on the color of our urine. If it is dark yellow, then it is concentrated. We should then drink plenty of water to replenish it. Too much water can be bad too. Those who drink large amounts of water are at risk of hyponatremia. This is a condition when the kidneys cannot excrete the excess water, the electrolyte content of the blood is diluted, resulting in low sodium levels in the blood. Anything in excess is not good.

They said that it should be 8 glasses a day. I agree with you that excessive intake of water is harmful to the elderly and other diseases because sometimes the organ that responsible for the regulation of fluid failed. But to a person with normal health it is very useful.

In my opinion, it depends on. But generally speaking, a person shall have 8 glasses of water every day. those will keep body fresh and work normally. if someone who did not lost too much water in body, he can drink less than 8 glasses of water. but no one can drink no water every day (:
