I was at my computer last night playing some games and wanted to turn on the radio so I had to open up a browser to do so and lo and behold at what I saw!! Walmart is selling caskets online only!! I had to do a double take and was flabbergasted!! I hollered for hubby to come and check this out and he couldn't believe his eyes either!! What a all around happy store which goes from engagement rings to baby clothes to caskets. I don't know about you but I get this feeling it's going to become the mainstream thing before too long and before you know it, Walmart will have it in the stores to display! Ewwwwww!! Creepy!! Not to mention, so close to Halloween? Now that makes it even more creepy!!Now say I order one, what do they do with the body till the casket gets there? It could be a week before it actually arrives. Refrigerate it until the funeral? Too weird! What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Not A Referral Link! http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&ic=48_0&search_query=caskets&Find.x=18&Find.y=8&Find=Find

I read that, too. Before long, WalMart will be the ONLY store around! I'm wondering just how they handle that kind of thing, too, about dying and not having the casket ready yet. Maybe they want people to buy them before they're needed and kind of just blend them into the decor like a coffee table or something until they're needed. Maybe people could buy them and sleep in them until the time came when they'd just stay put instead of getting up and going about their day? I'm sure there are plenty of weirdos who will be buying them just to have some fun with them, until the time came to use them for real, of course. What next? Autos? Space ships? I'd kinda like to see them selling hovercrafts. I'd definitely buy one of those! Hey! A hovercraft would make so much more sense, wouldn't it? I mean, they could be transportation, then work as a coffin when the time came! Of course, with the way so many people drive these days, it would probably become a coffin way before the owners were ready. I mean, hovering right into power lines and stuff.

Oh, I forgot something. Many years ago, while shopping at WalMart not long after they came to our area, an employee said to me, "If WalMart doesn't carry it, you don't need it." I guess too many people complained that, since they didn't carry caskets, and caskets are kind of needed for many people at the end of their lives, then that statement was wrong. Instead of being wrong, they just added caskets to their plethora of goodies. Hmmm...

And I forgot to add, you changed your avatar!! I didn't recognize you at first! I like it! How is everything going? Are you still getting rid of things and packing? Does that jackass husband of yours know yet?

Weird! My family won't be using that service--we're all going to be cremated after our bodies are harvested for usable organs. Then we'll fertilize someone's garden or a forest as our bodies are meant to do! It's no surprise to me that they're getting into the casket business but it could also be a Halloween joke.

What a shame! You could use her ashes to fertilize your flower garden and enjoy her all year round. I know this sounds flippant but it's not meant to be. Her body would be right there, providing you with the joy of living things. Or you could have her compressed into a diamond and wear it on a necklace. You could scatter "her" over a place she's never been so she can "visit" it. I kind of like the idea of the diamond. Too bad--lots of older people don't think of it as taking up good farmland, to them it's the proper way to treat an empty shell.

I don't think that is right and I really hope that they will not ever start selling them in stores because to my mind they will loose a lot of Custom, I for one would not shop somewhere where they sell them that is for sure

I agree with you gabs, I wouldn't shop there either if they start selling them in the stores. Too creepy for me but with kids liking the "dark side" these days, I'm sure it'll be something they'll enjoy. NOT ME! lol

A person doesn't have to be deceased before having their own casket. I think it's very thoughtful of Walmart. We are encouraged to put away or insure ourselves against the day we die...it IS inevitable, I think being able to pre-purchase a casket is a great idea. Also,I think a coffin sitting upright in the lounge-room would make a good conversation starter. What a good idea for a birthday or anniversary gift...I wonder if they do his and her sets? At least, if you get a casket before you kick the bucket, you can try it out to see if it fits and looks good. How many people would turn over in their grave if they were alive to see the ugly casket they have been placed in??? Personally, I'm not worried by this as I've decided to donate my body to science.

That's good that you're ok with it but for me and a lot of others, it's really creepy BUT, I do know it's a good thing because, what about the poor? We all need a casket when we die and what about the terminally ill, they might want to get one before their times happens. My mom wanted to donate her body to science but dad is adamantly against it so she's not going to.

..and they're overpriced too.my local home sells that top model for $700. no bargain there. i guess they expect people to buy them in advance and store them somewhere. but yea, that is a little surprising for walmart to be selling.

you know, that is true.they're supposed to match prices. i actually have considered buying one and putting it away for later use. when i think about it,if i live to 80,imagine the cost of one then! so,it'd be saving money. i could always make a coffee table of it

That is so distasteful. It freaks me out too. I cannot imagine. You are right, the next thing we know they will have a display in their stores.

That is the creepiest thing I've heard in a long time. YUCK!! What are they thinking? I really don't want to get engagement rings and caskets in the same store. LOL come to think of it, I don't get anything at Wal-Mart to begin with so I'm not losing out, but I still think it's disgusting.

LOL Oh I can't agree more!! It is very creepy and obviously it's something we'll need to get used to. I think walmart is doing it online only at the moment to kind of get us used to the idea before bringing it inside. I bet you they do eventually! Anything to get attention and draw more customers. You watch and see and you can bet on it that I won't go there anymore once that happens! NO WAY!!

So ? If it sells and they make a good profit ? I used to deal with somebody who imported and exported caskets to Haiti in my early years in shipping. The trade in coffins is not a prominent or popular thing but it is there and it makes a profit.

Hey Mary Beth, I can't believe you are actually relaxing and playing games on the computer!! Glad to hear it. As for the casket, is it possible that it may be a prop for Halloween? Probably not. I guess they expect people to buy before they keel over. My question is, where do you store it? Maybe lay away? Hugsss Leenie

That is indeed weird. I've never heard of a store like Walmart selling caskets. They must be the first one to do this. Maybe it's just a Halloween thing? I don't live in the USA, so I don't shop at Walmart, but if I would shop there, I wouldn't want to see caskets.

I agree with you on this, but luckily it's only for sale online only but I wouldn't put it past walmart to start displaying them in the stores. This day in age, kids like that sort of things and they'd get a kick out of it whereas us adults would not. But if they do decide to put them in the stores, I won't go back. Noooo way!!

It just shows you how stores are selling all kinds of things. I myself would be careful where I get a casket from because of problems in the past with places not really burying people etc. I myself want to know the loved one I buried was actually buried.
