Well, I use open source softwares. My Operating System is free along with all the softwares. I use UBUNTU. Open source helps stop piracy and is the most secure. What else do you need.

Yeah, It is UBUNTU linux. It is free and available to all from internet. You can also request for home delivery of UBUNTU CD from www.ubuntu.com completely free charge. It has one of the most easy to use and interactive desktop environment. Although a novice user find it a little difficult to work with as no ".exe" works under linux by default. But if you ask me, you should not worry about it. Softwares like openoffice(instead of MS-Office), media players, image editing softwares and all the basic softwares that any normal home user would need, are pre installed in ubuntu. All you need is an actieve internet connection, to update the installed softwares. When you play any media file for the first time, ubuntu will automatically search for the required plugins and install them for ever. No need for an anivirus program or a firewall. No ,ore system hangups as it is low on your system resources. You must use it. It takes a little time but once you start you start getting used to it. If you want you still can run windows programs in it.

For me, the free stuff on my computer is the messengers I have. I Don't really use free softwares because I think for computer maintenance and other activities I do, it's best to buy the software to make full use of it. For example, I paid for my antivirus even if it's expensive for PC maintenance.

I use a lot of free stuff. I pay for my anti-virus on my personal computer but the one the family uses has free AVG. I have Open Office, which is free. Audacity is a program for working with music files (create your own ringtones) and it is free. I also have Apophysis for creating fractals. It is a lot of fun.
