Is it really required to have an 8-Hours Sleep?

During my childhood days, my parents always force me to sleep at around 9 pm because I need to wake on the next day by 5 am. They always remind me to have an 8-hour sleep to keep me fit and healthy. Aside from that, they taught me the slogan "early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy & wise. " However, as I grow old, there are times, I cannot complete the 8-hour sleep. Usually, I go to bed at around 11 pm then wake-up at 5 am. Most of the time, its not like that, I sleep around 12 midnight then still wake-up at 5 am on the next day. My reason, eventhough you sleep early, or late, still you need to wake-up early morning on the next day. Besides, if I am going to sleep early, there are some things that I might forget to accomplish. How about you, do you really do this - to have an 8-Hour Sleep? Is there any ideal time-frame to sleep? Would you like to share your opinion on this?

To have an ideal and proper sleep one should have eight hours of sleep is the saying. But it varies from person to person. Small children especially kids sleep for ten to eleven hours. As you grow old your sleeping hours become less as you are preoccupied with other activities. So it is not really necessary you sleep for eight hours. Sleep is basically for the body to get recharged. So it entirely depends how much sleep one wants and and how much time one takes to get recharged. The slogan has nothing to do with sleep. It means that a person who is punctual never misses the bus thus gaining both health and wealth.

An 8 hour sleep cycle is supposed to be ideal for a human. If the amount of sleep goes down below 5 hours, the body cannot free itself of all the stress it has accumulated. Having said that there are a lot of people who sleep less but relieve their stress through other varieties such as meditation etc. But for a normal person 8 hour is the recommendation.

Hi airasheila. I used to believe in that idea when I was young. But a few years back, an 80+ years old woman won an Entrepreneur of the Year award here in the Philippines. Her rags-to-riches story was published/featured by different media networks. I was amazed by the fact that her mind is still sharp despite the fact that she only sleeps for 3 hours a day ever since she was a kid - she doesn't want to sleep away her time. She also mentioned that she has never been hospitalized because of severe sickness whatsoever. Up to now, she is very active in managing their family business. In her case, it was a matter of having the proper mindset. She never entertained the idea that she would get sick for not getting enough sleep.
