Do you find it difficult to sleep when you are in a new place?

Everytime I travel, I will have difficulties falling asleep, particularly the first night. I tend to find myself looking at every inch of the room before finally falling asleep, usually after an hour or so.. Does this happen to you as well?

Hi, candle. Yes I am like this. Especially when I am in another motel room. I tend to look around at my surroundings. I want to see where I will be laying my head at. I also do this when I go to stay at someones house. I even wait until I get very tired until I lay down. I am very picky when it comes to going to sleep in a new surrounding.

Hello cream, Oh yes... not to mention adjusting the pillows a million times too, to make myself comfortable. I think it's normal for us to feel like this. Given our hectic lifestyles, sleep is definitely important! Thanks for taking time to response. :)

yes, I don't sleep really good on other places specially when I am new to the place much more if I am in a lodging house or a hotel? I don;t sleep good when it is my first night. Maybe that is normal to most people. But when I am so very tired, I can maybe sleep really good and forget that I am in another place.. hahaha

Hello Bebs, haha, you are so right. Nothing beats falling asleep fast particularly when you are in a new place after a long day. I do envy those who can fall asleep so easily even though it's a new place. I wonder what their secrets are...

Yes i to have this habit of sleepless night when i am moved out of my bedroom. It takes me sometime to get adjusted to the new environment to get proper sleep. People in my family make fun of me but i do not bother. I really miss my bed, bedsheet and pillow when i am in a new place.

Hi bewitched, It's something that gets to you after a while right. Here we are trying to get a good night's rest and yet since it's a new place, we have trouble adjusting. Sorry to hear that people do make fun of you because of this. no worries! We are in the same boat! :)

Yes, this always happen to me especially if i stay in hotels. I am not really comfortable staying in hotel room with a vacant bed. I feel that if i fall asleep there will be somebody sleeping in that vacant bed. I also inspect the cabinets inside my room to assure me that nothing will bother me during my stay. I have lots of horrifying experiences with hotels already that is why i cant sleep when i stay in hotels especially on the first night.

Hello triplejazzm, Sorry to hear that you have lots of horrifying experiences with hotels. I tend to get edgy too if the bed next to mine is empty. Now, as I need to travel more, I have to tell myself to get used to it over time. Hope your next hotel stays are good ones!

Nothing just feels the same as your own bed or room. So when I sleep at a friends house or a hotel it never feels the same. However, this feeling only lasts about a night, after that my body adjusts to the conditions and I am able to fit right in!

Hello, Hmm come to think of it, it's the same for me too. By the time the second night of the stay approaches, I am much better in adjusting to the place. Hei, thanks for pointing that out! Have a nice day!

Hello doreen, Well, I do find reading a book helpful in making me fall asleep, unless if it happens to be an interesting one! LOL. Have you tried reading before bed? Yes, I do look forward to sleeping in my own bed again, particularly if it's after a long trip. Thanks for your response!

I have always found it to be difficult to sleep in any new place and it usually takes me quite awhile to adjust to it. It takes me till I am so exhausted that I finally pass out before I will be able to fall asleep and I always end up waking up off and on all night. I have always preferred my own bed I guess!!

:).... I can certainly related to that...Nothing beats sleeping in my own bed, no matter how posh the hotel can be. The same goes for whenever I am visiting relatives. Most of the time, I will end up listening to the clock tick! I do find reading a book as helpful in making me fall asleep, faster still if it's a textbook! LOL. What about you?

Yes! I experience the same thing. It's usually because the beds aren't as comfortable as my own or I'm just not used to the area, so I have trouble.. trusting my surroundings. (It sounds a little paranoid, but it's not, I swear - lol). But yes. It does happen to me. I also have very weird dreams usually when I travel or when I'm away from home, also not sure why that happens!

Hello maezee, oh yes, I understand what you mean about trouble trusting the surroundings! particularly when i am in a hotel room, i tend to check a million times to make sure the room door is locked! i cant recall the dreams i will have when i am travelling though, too busy staying awake glancing around! Thanks for dropping by!

Hi candleintherain. My company for 7 years required me to travel a lot. I really had sleeping difficulty on my first few travels. I noticed that this is because I used to sleep during the entire trip. To remedy the situation, I considered the expected time of my arrival in the location. I sleep during the trip when I expect to arrive at the location in the morning or at mid-day. On the other hand, I keep myself busy and try hard not to sleep during the trip when I expect to arrive at the location in the evening. Since then, my sleeping habit at a new location had been improved.

Yawwwp! This happens to me also. I don't know, maybe it's the fact that I'm too excited to sleep or the fact that I'm trying to get acquainted with the surroundings that I'm sleeping in. Sometimes I guess, you're just not comfortable with the pillows, bed, and the overall environment since it's a new place and you're used to your own.
