Can you speak multiple languages!

November 20, 2009 10:18pm CST
I would love to be able to speak another language but i have been too lazy! Whilst at school we learnt a small bit in the earlier years but i chose to opt out of languages all together, which i know now was one of the worst things i have done as i think that i would benefit in being able to speak another language. Does anyone else speak more than one language? Has it benefited you in life? If you dont would you consider learning a new language?

I only know english but in high school it was mandatory for me to learn spanish. I think since my professors were kind of boring or taught it in a not so great way, I just became really unwilling to learn the language. So, I just learned what I had to learn for the sake of a grade. It's been years since i graduated from high school, and I barely remember anything from what I've learned. I remember some basic phrases and basic grammatical rules, but not enough to be able to become fluent in the language. I have tried over the years to learn multiple languages, from French to Japanese, but I usually start off real strong in the sense that I study every day for a couple of hours, but after a while I get lazy and stop..

[guesses country usa checks, right] learning a new language is actually hard work and often not very interesting if you have poor teachers. what language do you want to learn now?)

I speak English and Spanish is my second language. I learned it because I worked with a lot of Hispanics and it was very hard to communicate with them sometimes. It has benefited me to be able to speak it. I enjoyed learning Spanish and would love to learn more languages. I think it is neverending when you learn though. Things within the dialects are always changing.

I would love to learn and speak different languages. But sad to note that I cannot. Once option would have been to enroll and learn different languages but I concentrated in my course. Well, who knows, maybe later on I can learn something. Maybe perhaps online learning.

[guesses country checks yes uk] same here but it is not your fault - the language teaching in schools is abysmal. and somehow the culture says 'be insular'. i took german at school and learnt 6 words of german and nothing else. i can speak spanish but only because i lived in south america for a few years.

Yes,I do,I am a Chinese,I can speak many dialects of my country, because I travle a lot because of my work,of course,it benefit me,it help to make friends from different places easier,I am working in a international company, and we use English as an offical language and we have a lot of chances to communicate with many English speaking people. This year,I travled to Germany because of work,I was there had a very good time, but I find that English is not enough there,Now I am learning Germany, but it really is a little frustrating me because the grammer is very complicated but I have a confidence that I will command this language though I am not very talent in language but I am a hard working man.

Nope, but I'd love to be able to. I can only speak 2 languages, and some basics of others; like this word and that word. I can also understand some Mandarin, though I can't really speak it. It would be so cool to be bilingual, definitely. Would be very good for career-wise and personal lifestyle too.

I can speak pretty much only English but with a touch of Japanese - about 5 years of schooling for it. I still wouldn't call myself fluent in it. And I know that in the future, working as a translator (what I hope to become), it will definitely be useful, as it will be part of my job. Right now, being able to speak a small amount of Japanese doesn't help me all that much because I really rarely have a chance to use it - except while in school or on the off-chance of meeting someone who speaks Japanese or is from Japan. We don't have too many Japanese people in my city (unfortunately!) mainly just hispanic. So it doesn't do me all that much good!

i don't speak any other language but i can sign it is really nice to be able to do it and it is much easier to learn than a spoken language. i have also tried to learn Spanish with no luck and Latin which i forgot quickly tho it was a fun language to learn. someday i wish to learn better and maybe i will get one of those rosetta stone programs to try out how well it works. when i was in school my homeroom teacher spoke something like 10 languages fluently and was learning another 7 i was amazed that she could hold that many tongues in her head and use them and respected her very much for it. i also could not for the life of e figure out why she was teaching at a public high school where few of her students appreciated her talents.

hi loneraver^^;; well, i hope i can. it's really pretty interesting to speak new languages. i only know English because it's my country's adapted second language(or business language) and Filipino as the national language. there are about 127 dialects in my country though, each town or region has it's own and so far i can speak 3 of it. i am learning Korean as of now, i can already write and read but still speak a few. i need to learn this as i am planning to move to this country by next year. i wish to learn a few of Chinese too and maybe French if i have a chance.
