i have always been confused whether to buy a desktop or a laptop... to add more confusion, should i also consider getting a high end cellphone that offers computer features? there are pluses and minuses of choosing between the two. i chose desktop for the meantime because it is what my budget can get. but should i have waited for some time until i earned enough for a laptop.

Hi, chiumee! I think it all depends on what do you do with your computer or laptop. If you require very demanding functions, 3D games, graphic designing, video editing, etc... then better to buy a desktop. If you just want it as a wifi device, surfing on internet, chatting on IM, text editing, etc... then a laptop should be enough. A high end phone, is still a phone. Even it has some computer features, you can't make it do complicated work. So, it is not only a budget issue, but also depends on what work do you do with you computer.

if you need upgrade in the future, then desktop is the primary choice. Laptop is difficult to upgrade in most cases.

Hi. If I were you, I would prefer buying a laptop. Why? With laptop, you could enjoy working/surfing almost anywhere and anytime you want. A laptop is still different from latest cellphone technologies providing some computer features.

i think i will have to wait a little more time in order to be prepared financially about getting a laptop. nevertheless, there are as well affordable brands which offers quite impressive features found in different big names of laptops.

The most reliable thing you can buy is a desktop, wich you already have. It can do any jobs you need if you only plan to use it in office or at home. Of course if you plan to move around a lot, a laptop or the cheaper version a netbook is a better choice. Netbooks have become quite cheap, and u can do anything you need in regards to online activity(browse, surf, email) and office edits. Some even come with several multimedia enhancements, and most run windows xp or linux as operating system. However, batteries will die after 1-2 hours of heavy work, so if you think you can compute a day without plugin it in an electrical outlet think again . You must keep in mind a cellphone is very limited regardless how many computer features it has, not just in power, processing, and options, but as a way to input and work as well. There are many mobile operating systems and all have their limits in available applications and features. Not to mention the battery will die fast if u plan to use it extensively. The desktop is a good option cuz it can be easily upgraded, repaired, enhanced, god forbid if your laptop or expensive cell brakes and you are out of warranty. Not to mention you can drop the laptop or cell by mistake, and they might fail to start after an accidental shock. Be careful not to forget stuff, when you connect your things elsewhere but home, it is common to forget chargers, or other small things such as wireless modems, direct cable connections and so on. And be on the look out for thieves :).

I think it mostly depends on what you are using it for and how you are going to use it. I have both and I use them for different things. A laptop is the way to go if you want portability. I can use my laptop in any room of my house or outside on the patio and I have wireless so I can surf the internet as well. When I go on a trip, my laptop goes with me. I wouldn't be without it. I use it primarily for the internet, email and word processing. I can sit in my easy chair and surf the net and watch TV at the same time. I also have a desktop and I use it for some programs that use a lot of memory or need more computing power or disk space, such as graphics programs. You can get a more powerful computer with more features and a faster processor, more bang for your buck, with a desktop. You can also use it to surf the internet but you are tied to your computer station, wherever you set it up in your house. It's also better at handling more peripherals such as printers and scanners and you can leave them hooked up to it all the time. Both have their advantages and disadvantages so it's really nice to have both. You say you have a desktop so you have your main computer for handing any programs you need to run. You can look around for a cheap laptop, maybe even a used one and it will be ok for surfing the net. You don't need the latest or fastest processor just for that. If you keep it fairly clean, in other words don't install a lot of software on it, it will maintain decent speed and will do what you need to do to work online. You might even consider one of the new cheaper, smaller notebook computers designed specifically for word processing and surfing the net. [;-)

i'll take your advice millertime. so i will just pimp my desktop a little more to make it faster. then i am good to bring my machine back to my country. of course i will leave the monitor. it's heavy. hehe. laptops, i will look for the second hand. but it scares me about the word refurbished laptop. i am not confident about this kind compared to a second hand machine. thanks.

Laptop is you can have it anywhere. But desktop for me at home is better to have it in home. I like both of them.

At my work place and at home, I use the desktop always. I llke the monitor in front. Less stressful than a laptop. But, ofcourse, when travelling I carry along a laptop because I need to keep in touch with my work place back home and also with friends and relatives. Laptop these days are also very well featured and has plenty of memory.

Hey chiumee. Personally i have been using a laptop all my life, and never used a desktop before. I realised that i would much prefer a desktop over a laptop. Mainly because i stick at home more than i am on the move. The price is also eye friendly, and i can get a much better speced desktop for a cheapish price. A laptop is always good to have. I would like to get a mobile desktop, if you know what i mean. It may be a thick laptop, but its an 'all in one'. Anyways, i like to mylot with my laptop because it is literally easier, especially if i get a super slim mac.

I say laptop all the way. Just because of the versatility of being able to travel with it, whether it be on a business trip or from one room to the other. Just make sure you get a decent model, because some are pretty bad and are a waste of money.

its impossible to tell what "you need" without seeing your needs. while posting such questions you should also post for what type of work will you be using that computer for. Assuming that you're a normal guy who likes a bit of occasional gaming, music, HD movies, multi tasking, Image editing, basic video editing, burning discs, staying connected to the net etc ill suggest a laptop will be your best friend. If you are only a gaming freak, you should go for a desktop. Else go for a desktop replacement or an ultra portable.

I like using my laptop more than the desktop but I did start out with a desktop because that is what was affordable to me at the time. Really the only difference between the two is that you aren't tied to working in one spot all of the time. As far as the cell phones, again, I would go with what I could afford, the more a phone does, the more services you will have to buy with it in order for it to work. I do recommend, though to keep looking and know exactly what you want when you decide to buy, there's nothing worse than buying something you really don't want and hating it.

I choose the both for different sittuations..When i need something for information keeping ill chose a desktop..When i need something to bring my information,or use it in security situations..But most of times i get my flash, when i bring information, because most of my friends have laptops..But i thing laptops are better, because now are created laptops with maybe 500-600 ggb,and a battery that needs to be charged on maybe 10-20 hours..And soon maybe there will be no computers and how you say "desktop" and laptops and portable computers and ipods will rule the world :D But i bring laptop to school because i can chat with my friends, and catch wireless net that is free :)

I agree with dudebeccafell, laptop is the best choice. You can do anything anywhere specially during emergency where you need to upload/update something as soon as possible. You can connect to any available free wireless connections while waiting, read articles, play games on the go. Portability is the main advantage and as an advise, choose a light laptop that you can bring anywhere without any hassle..Good luck, happy laptop choosing =)

Its quite simple : 1- desktop - cheap and can provide much more powaaaa :) for less cash 2- laptop - for same capabilitys tripple the price + theres a lot of things you need to be aware off, coz you cant replace parts inside as easy like on desktop. I personaly use toshiba p300d laptop, coz i needed speed and power that i can put in a bag, go to work with it , go to lan partys and so on, but if i could turn back time, desktop would be my option. just to add ;Laptops overheat often (AMD), so care on that. cheers m8
