Chased across three states...

My mom used to have a condo in Durango Colorado. A few Christmases after she got it she wanted to go up there - to let family come and ski at Purgatory or whatever... Well, we get there, her, my sister and I, and all is fine. Then my Great Aunt went into the hospital, and she wanted someone who could be with her 12/7 for a few days/weeks when she got out. Well, the rest of the family lived in NJ and might go over, but didn't want to spend all that time with her, so mom offered to go. Only problem WAS, a blizzard hit Denver and was getting ready to arrive in Durango and the only plane out of Durango was grounded because it was to go to Denver. My sister got on the phone, found a flight out of Albuquerque at 1 p.m. Driving from Durango to Albuquerque takes at least 4 hours. We quickly packed and got out of Durango as the snow was starting to fall for the drive to New Mexico at 8 a.m. I saw the most interesting thing on our drive out of Durango - now, remember I live in Austin Texas, we don't get much now - but on the steep hillsides there were these "rolls" of snow where something had fallen and it had made these flat sided "balls" of snow - very strange, sticks in my memory. We got to Albuquerque shortly before noon and dropped mom off at the airport. We listened to the weather and it said that the snow was to arrive in Albuquerque around 3, so we hit the road. We got to Amarillo around 6-7 and stopped to eat. The blizzard was supposed to hit Amarillo at midnight, so, rather than get stuck in Amarillo by the snow, we kept going. Midnight we stopped in Wichita Falls, my sister called her partner (pre-cell phone days) to let her know we were coming and to make sure there was a place for me to sleep when we finally arrived. Her partner pulled out the hide-a-bed and had it made when we finally dragged in after 2 a.m. in Arlington Texas. I called that "the day we were chased across 3 states by a blizzard!" The next day I drove on to Houston to be with friends down there and then bring Maggiepie home with me - she was supposed to stay with family, but after just a few days of family she had enough and spent the rest of the time with the friends too. I had a lovely time with my friends - BUT - all my clothes were for Durango Colorado, and the blizzard only made it to Wichita Falls, I had to borrow clothes to wear because it was too HOT in Houston for my clothes! So, have you ever been chased by weather out of town, across states like I was?

Hello, Elic. Well, you know my story about driving through Spain in the snow on Monday, as you told me that inspired this discussion. I'd never driven in snow before, and I'm in no hurry to repeat the experience. About 450 of the 530 mile drive was through snow. I have to say, though, seeing that Spain gets very little snow, and ususally only in the north, the authorities were on top of the situation. Before we hit the snow, we saw snow ploughs parked along the roadside waiting for the call. At the height of the bad weather, the police stopped the traffic on the motorway to allow the snow ploughs and gritters through to clear the road. Although we were at a standstill for well over an hour, once we were moving again the road conditions were much safer, so the police made the right call. In England, where we regularly get snow, everything grinds to a halt, even when bad weather is expected. However, thanks to the Spanish organisation, we were able to continue our journey, and only arrived three hours behind schedule. It's much warmer here now, so like you, I've gone from winter clothes to summer clothes in the space of a few days.

My mom and dad did a tour of Northern Italy and then Spain and Portugal. While they were cold and miserable in Italy, they really enjoyed the time in the later part of the tour and, over my mom's bed is a picture she took in Portugal that she had blown up to poster sized and framed. I've always wanted to visit Spain - I hear its beautiful and some parts are still very wild.

sounds like you just missed some really bad weather in England!

Yes, it's beautiful here, although some parts of the coast are a bit over-developed. The main attraction is the Spanish people, who are very family-oriented and always ready to party. I only wish we'd moved here years ago, but better late than never.

I have never had such an experience and could not have it where I live because here the weather is fairly predictable. But my sister has had some experiences of weather chasing her as she likes in the south where there are rain storms. Anyway, I thank you for sharing your experience as it was interesting and well told. But I bet you didn´t see it as a good story when you were living it. Take care and happy posting!

Actually, this time, by the time we were leaving Amarillo, we realized we were going to have a good tale to tell! I'm just lucky my sister isn't here to beat me to the punch!

Wow. That is something else. We have had to leave our vacation spot early because of bad weather also. It was hurricane weather. We had to rush out of there also to make sure to get out before it hit.

I had a few friends run out of Houston during Rita and they swore they weren't leaving for Ike and they were fine. They did all gather at the complex of a few friends (they all live in same complex) and while the area around them was flooded, they were high and dry!

I am sorry that you and your family had such a rotten time being chased by the weather across three states. The weather is fairy calm in my home country but in 1987 I remember a very fierce storm and many trees fell down. Seven oaks became One Oak. In 2005 I booked a flight to Cancun in Mexico. However a hurricane hit the Mexican Coast. I had my flight canceled by the travel agent and my money was refunded. I wanted to go to any tropical destination. I got offered a flight to Male in the Maldives. When I borrowed a travel guide book on the Maldives I thought accommodation costs were incredibly high. Off I went to the Maldives for two weeks and I spent loads of money. In 2006 I finally flew off to Cancun in Mexico. I popped down to Belize and Guatemala. The local people thought they had a cold spell in Belize, hardly, it was over 20 degrees C.

We were cooking this summer, temps often over 40º C - I guess I shouldn't complain now that its 6º C and raining - but I will....

Six degrees C this winter means you have the right to complain. It isn't warm here either. There was a bitter cool wind and it felt freezing. My central heating is on this evening.

Interesting story. I'm afraid I can't match it. Did your mother get snowed in at the hospital? Did your aunt recover?

well, the hospital was in New Jersey, so I think the storm got there, but only the next day later! She was able, with a cousin's help, get her aunt back to her home, but they were pretty well iced in at that point. Happily, family came and brought things, and the cousin that lived upstairs also helped out.

I've only had an experience like that once. I was thinking about moving to British Columbia, Canada but wasn't too sure how I'd like the rain all winter. I decided to vist some friends in Washington State at Christmas, so drove across the Country to the west coast. It was fine on the way out, but coming back a snow storm started as I was leaving Washington. I was in blinding snow for most of week trying to get home. The worst was in Wyoming. We got a little bit ahead of the storm and everyone seemed so relieved that they speeded up on the major highway. Unfortunatey the roads there don't much get ploughed or sanded or salted. I hadn't speeded up too much because the area we were in had a lot of those neat rock formations called Buttes. I stayed a little slower to look at the buttes - thank goodness. I came over the top of a mountain and it was glare ice. Cars and trucks were spinning out and crashing into each other and flying off the road. I threw my van into second gear to slow me down and didn't touch the brakes. I literally slid through the middle of the mess. When I stopped at a rest stop a few miles down the road I was still shaking. Scary stuff!

Honestly, that's the closest I've ever come to a blizzard (other than the Dairy Queen kind) and I don't want to get in another one - the snow we have here is more than enough for me! http://www.dairyqueen.com/us-en/eats-and-treats/menu/treats/blizzard/

I got chased from Virginia to Pennsylvania by hurricane Floyd. We went from DC to Arlington National Cemetary, got soaked. Went to Mt. Vernon and only got drizzled on. Drove up to Gettysburg and got drizzled on. The next day it was pouring and we drove all the way th Philadelphia in it. It was pretty scary. Next day it was as if nothing had ever happened.

That is just so TYPICAL for a hurricane! Rain like its the Flood and then the next day like nothing ever happened (except for all the debris every where!)

Not quite like you but I did fly out of 30F temperatures to 80F+ temperatures. I went to the Virgin Islands from Baltimore, Maryland on December 1st. I had on a long, woolen cape when the trip started. Once we got to San Juan, Puerto Rico, that cape was even too hot to carry! LOL Unfortunately, on the way back home, I forgot to pack that cape. I got back to 30F weather with no coat! BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! It really sucked because we got back into Baltimore at 2:00 a.m. I wasn't about to call any of my family to please bring me a coat, not at that hour. So, I had to brave the cold all the way home from the airport. I'm glad to hear that you managed to keep ahead of that blizzard! I've heard too many horror stories of people getting snowbound because of them.

and do understand, we live in Texas, where snow storms are few and far between! Yikes, brrr - I guess I would always think of the cold, because we get so little of it - but it seems its been a very cold December this year!

No I have not ever had that happen to me. I have been in snow storms before but none of them chased me between three states. Usually it was just in the state I live in and I was going home from shopping or work.

I always thought it was crazy - we get a snow storm and they send us home - at the same time! and suddenly, we've got SNOW and TRAFFIC and people panicking to get kids from school - CRAZY - can you tell Texas, at least AUSTIN has no idea how to deal with snow?

Nothing like that has ever happened to me, but thanks for posting this. It's an awesome tale. I have heard of people being chased by a tornado, but never a blizzard, and that too through 3 states. Next time I think you had better check the weather channel before you plan on taking a car trip. Also it may be a good idea to pack different kinds of clothes for different types of climates. Better to be safe than sorry.

well, we kind of knew the blizzard was coming, but we expected to be holed up at mom's condo all nice and warm - instead of trying to make flights and get back to Texas!

Ive never had that experience. But I was stuck in an airport for two full days because it was snowed out a year or two ago. That alone was dreadful.

Great story Elic! I can’t say I have ever had such an adventure! It doesn’t get so cold in Australia and although we do have rain storms during the winter I wouldn’t call them blizzards! You made it to your destination and have a good story to tell. It’s funny that after all that effort to escape the blizzard you ended up in a place that was too warm for your clothing!

it was, I told my sister that if I had KNOWN I was going to Houston, I'd've gone there in the FIRST place! It was either that, or go home to a cold, empty house, well, the cats would've liked it!
