Favorite book you've read for school?

I ask only because it seems like 99% of the books I read for school were totally bad, bland, horrible, and non-contreversial. Which are not my types of books. LOL. My question for you is: which were your FAVORITE books that you were required to read in school? The ones you actually enjoyed? When did you read them (what grade/age), what's it called, and why did you like it so much? The only two I can think of are ones I read in middle school, around 6th or 7th grade. One was called "Watership Down", and it was really gruesome at the time but totally life-changing. (Ha, I can't remember how, but it was really good!) It was actually about rabbits... But it was analogy for war and loss and politics and things that people can relate to. The other one I loved reading was "The Hobbit", the pre-lude to the Lord of the Rings series. I never actually got around to reading the actual "LOTR" books, as I got too bored halfway through the first one, but I thought the Hobbit was totally amazing! There was action at every page. Very imaginative. Very cool at the time. What about you?

The best book that I read in school was "The Outsiders" by SE Hinton. It was amazing! Now that I have written that I have decided that "To Kill a Mockingbird" was actually my favorite. It was such a powerful and amazing story. I think that I might read it again over the holidays. The only book that we read in school that I really disliked was "Red Badge of Courage". That book sucked so bad that I didn't finish reading it (and I've never not finished another book in my life). For the most part though we got to read pretty good books. Even the Shakespeare wasn't too horrible.

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. That is my all time favorite book. I've read it about 100 times now and seen every movie version of it that has ever came out, including the bollywood version!

My favourite book that I read for school was a Danish book called "But you can't run away" by Edith Ranum. It is a story about a girl who gradually becomes blind. At first she tries to hide her problems, and she tries pretend that she is alright even though it gets harder for her to do her homework, participate in sports etc. One day she gets into an accident because of her bad eyesight, and she is forced to see the truth (=that she will become totally blind in the future). In the book we follow her thoughts, her problems and her sadness. Eventually she starts to accept the sitation and she learns to cope with it. The book is a second-person narrative. The author uses the word "you" instead or I or she and that way the author makes it sound like the things are happening to the reader and not a character in a book. I liked the book very much. I couldn't put it down, and I finished the book in a two days.

Wow, you got to read "The Hobbit"? All my English teachers said it didn't have any literary merit and I didn't get any grades for reading it. Yeah, I've hated pretty much everything I've had to read for school too. English teachers and I just don't get along when it comes to books. They have an aversion to happy stories, I swear. The only two books I can recall actually liking were "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Pride and Prejudice". I've recently started myself on a quest to find all the classics that were never assigned in school that I might actually like. "Watership Down" is on that list.

I loved the Jane Austen books I studied. I did Pride and Prejudice for my O-level exam (age 16) and Persuasion for my A-level (aged 18) and loved both of those novels. I remember enjoying a lot of books we read at school though.
