I agree with you. Well, I have to say though, I am definitely not what you would consider a "Christian" or someone who lives "by the book". So technically, I'm one of those people who don't celebrate Christmas for what it is: which is to celebrate the birth of the Christian Jesus. Or whatever it's celebrating (I wouldn't know, I'm not religious.) But I think "Christmas" takes on it's own meaning depending on who you ask. To me, Christmas is extremely important just because it's a time to recognize what we have around us: to spend time with our family, exchange gifts and other deeds of generosity, and to just enjoy each other's presence (and presents. LOL.) I think this is what matters, really. This has been what Christmas has meant to me..Since the day I was born. I was never raised in any real structured family with any real religion. We just celebrate Christmas for what WE think it is, which is a paid holiday (at work), and time to spend with our family members (which we can never really do enough of these days.) But me and my family don't get sucked into the craze, like a lot seem to do. Yes, some department stores have some pretty good deals going on during the holidays - but me and my small, close-knit family know our limits. Not only are we pretty broke (financially), but we don't usually get carried away! We usually exchange small, inexpensive, but thoughtful gifts with oneanother. It's truly one of my most favorite times of year. It's so.. real. And genuine. I can understand how some people might get caught up in the craziness that is Christmas & it's commercialism! I think a lot of people get crazy around this time, what with the sales, sales, and MORE sales going on at department stores and the like. I feel like stores and marketing companies definitely prey on our desire to make others happy; or to "out-do" the next person with our wonderful gifts. It's never been a competition for me, though. I do not fight over parking spots, I do not wake up at 3 am to go black friday shopping, I don't go crazy decorating the outside of my house with lights and reindeer and big Santa statues. No, thank you.

This is how we live in this materialistic world. Manufacturers and businessmen will capitalize on any festivals but christmas is worse hit as someone out there has started giving out gifts during christmas which generated more sales for children toys and other christmas goodies. I wish christmas is celebrated in its old traditional way without the appearances of santa to shower gifts to everyone during christmas.

Hi falafel, welcome to myLot! I completely agree with you. I never celebrate christmas because there's more to it than it seems. The origin is of pagan celebration. It was only adopted by christian after a pagan ruler wants to rule over christian too. The government at that time wants to reach out the christians so they combine the birthday of their god Saturnalia, which is 25th December with the birthday of Christ. There's no way that Jesus was born on that day! In the bible it was stated that the shepherds were with their flocks outside in the field. If that month was December, there's no way they could be outside since it's freezing in winter. This is just one fact that makes Christmas inappropriate for Christians to believe. We need to always see the origin of a celebration before we celebrate it. If the origin is pagan, of course we wold like to avoid it. If not, it's as if we are willing to lick the sweet lollipop that was taken from the gutter! I guess the people that preserves this celebration did it for the money :( like you said..
