I am going to my fiances parents for christmas and usually everyone brings something. I wanted to bring a dessert but I want it to be something that will stand out. Not just brownies or simple cake. I was wondering if anyone has some favorite recipes to share or some popular holiday recipes. I would make pumpkin roll but it looks long and drawn out. Thanks for any recipes you share.

Well the best and easiest way to "dress up" for me is flowers. I bake a simple cake in a bunt pan, I then use a low vase or cup that fits snug in the bunt hole and place flowers in it. I use edible flowers such as carnations, roses, or pansies. Check out http://www.glenbrookfarm.com/herbs/edible_flower.htm they have a nice list of them. They can also be nice arranged at the base of the cake which I love because it covers up the little messy spots of my icing. Also a killer recipe I use for this is a double chocolate cherry cordial cake. 1 box chocolate cake mix 1 can unsweetened pie cherries eggs indicated on box 1 container chocolate icing 2 tbs. amaretto (optional) I make the cake as directed minus the oil and water. I add the cherries & amaretto, if too thick I add a tiny bit of milk until proper consistency. This can vary because the amount of liquid in pie filling can vary so much. I bake at 25 degrees higher then directed and times can be a bit longer mattering on the oven. After it is cooled I heat up icing and pour it on top so that it dribbles down side of bunt. Decorate with flowers and bam perfect cake. I have request for this all the time.

My favourite christmas treat is sugar cookies. or Trifle! yummmm - however ive noticed many families make trifle differently. Some use brandy in theirs others dont. Also different fruits.
