What are the best free(legit) virus scans?

I've been having computer trouble and was just wondering what the best free virus scans were. A lot of the downloads out there are malicious so it would be nice to find an actual free virus scan that doesn't in fact infect me with a virus.

Are you using any kind of AV or spyware protection now? If not, then you are inviting trouble and you are probably infected with malware. As already mentioned, AVG and Avira are highly-rated free AV programs. I assume you are using Windows. If you are using XP or Vista, then Microsoft Security Essentials (which now comes bundled with Windows 7), is available for free download. Reviews have rated it very high and it uses little of your computer's resources. Make sure you keep your virus definitions updated. I am not sure with AVG or Avira, but I know that Essentials updates automatically with realtime. With free versions, you may have to manually update them. New viruses hit the internet every day, so keeping definitions current is crucial.

There's one called Ewido Anti-virus. I can't say that it's the best (because I don't haev a basis of comparison) but I have it on my computer, it works pretty well. And I know it's free, and you can download it from their website. I trust them and they're well known for being legitimate.

I have used AVG and Avast, but I like Avast better. I just bought this laptop yesterday, and I put Avast on it before I did anything as I sure don't want viruses in this new computer. I like the fact it updates when it needs to, it is a very good virus scanner, I think. It is the one that I have used the most and I highly recommend it. I used to use Norton a few years back, but I got tired of paying for a subscription and it really wasn't all that good. Some use McAfee, but I don't like that one either, but I think you have to pay for that one too. I would go for Avast. Take care, and happy mylotting.

AVG is very good. I use their free version on one of my machines and it works very well. One thing you should do once you have it is to turn off the automated search feature. What that does is it enables the software to search the Internet any time you are online. It looks for new viruses and malware. Unless you have a lot of bandwidth available, it will slow down your web surfing. Just turn it off. Once every week or two you can update your software and you should be fine. You can put it on a timer so it will scan your computer on the date and time you choose. It is capable of removing or quarantining almost anything it comes across.

According to me avast antivirus is the best free antivirus solution for home version only. You can download it from the official website alwil softwares. You will even get a free 1 year licence if you want it. Apart from this you must install a free firewall software (i am using zonealarm). It will stop all attacks from the internet. Try it the combination really works good, i have been using it from quite a long time and believe me i didn't need to format my sysytem for the past 5 years.

thanks for the suggestion about zone alarm. Right now I'm using AVG but in the future I will probably switch to avast. Thanks.
