In the past this was the year 2001,I bought a puppy from the pet shop.I bought a Golden Retriever puppy, they had papers for the puppy. The puppy turned out to be a great dog. Then recently I heard that pet shops get their puppies from puppy mills. Is this true?Of corse the pet shop will probably claim they get it from a breeder. What's your opinion about this?

I've seen those puppy mills on animal planet, and the shops that sell puppies. For me it is quite weird to see it, as no shops here sell dogs or cats. They sell mice, hampsters and guinea pigs, but for cats and dogs you have to go to a breeder so you'll always know where they're from. Or you can go to an animal shelter, but never to a regular pet store. If it is from a breeder, it should come with proper papers? Most breeders have name for their kennel, and will give you papers etc because if you at some point decide to use the dog in dogs shows and competitions and do well, they will benefit from people knowing where the dog is from.

Then I would guess she is from a breeder, but if you know the parents it shouldn't be too difficult to find out who has had them.

The puppies do come from puppy mills or bought from people that breed dogs that have left over puppies that sell slower than the epople want to n sell them, SO THEY SELL to stores etc. Usually the papers r fake also. I know this because a friend of mine sold a litter of Shitz su puppies for the pricw he was going to get if he sold them to individual homes, unregistered. He went to the store to check them out to see how they where doing. The sales clerk said that the price was with Registration papers. The clerk wasn't the same person that my friend sold them to. The person came upto my friend while he talking to this clerk ,my friend asked them HOW CAN YOU do this.. Different father n mother, they didn't care.. The only thing you can do to protect yourself is to have the sale final on your vets ok only n hope for the best. REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U.

It depends on the shop. Some pet stores do use puppy mills and sadly its hard for us to tell the difference because like you said, they will tell you they got them from a breeder.

Well, these dogs come from special stock-breeding farms and they are in really good shape and health!

The puppy I bought that time, was a great puppy and I wouldn't even think it came from a puppy mill. The pet shop gave me papers and it was a healthy puppy.

It's true that some lower end pet stores will use Puppy Mills to supply there animals. Fortunately in recent years Puppy Mills have been exposed to the public and many Pet Store owners pride themselves on NOT supporting Puppy Mills. I work in the Pet Trade(Reptiles) So I know many pet store owners. They all have a list of Breeders that come to them from time to time with Puppies. You can also tell by the condition of the animal. If it seems healthy and well taken care of, it probably came from a respectable breeder.

I was just curious, because the puppy I bought was very healthy, and they had papers. The puppy was also AKC registered. She was a very haelthy puppy too.She was a good one.I've always been told by people that they all go to puppy mills,I didn't agree with that,I had a great experience buying a pet shop puppy.
