What is the most unusual thing that you hae combined with oats/porridge

January 18, 2010 1:11pm CST
I like to have porridge/oats for breakfast and I have it either with banana mashed into it or sultanas or even sometimes with cocoa powder. What have you made it with - I am looking for inspiration to make it more exciting.

I have never really put anything unusual in it. I have put raisins in it. I have put cinammon in it and I have put bananas, and apple sauce in it. That is about all I have tried. Plain oatmeal just tastes really nasty to me. I know it is healthy but it is hard to eat. I have not tried cocoa powder that might improve it significantly I will have to give that a try.

Whoo apple sauce sounds like a good one to me. I have not tried cinnamon - I do not like if I can taste cinnamon in things so it would have to be a tiny bit. But I put raisins all the time as well. Also I just remembered that I have crushed biscuits into porridge before normally malted milk or digestives. I have also put Holicks in it whish is a malt drink All those ways are delicious.

It is lovely with Horlicks, try it but don't put too much horlicks otherwise it gets really sweet.

When I was pregnant with my first son, I HAD to have sweet mincemeat stirred into my porridge...it was my particular craving. Now i tend to put dried apricots, prunes, stewed apples, instant cappucino powder.... depends whats in the house - not all at the same time though!

All those sounds like good things to try, I have done chopped apple before but stewed apple will probably be much nicer. Prunes sound good too. I am not coffee person so I able to stomach the cappucino. Are the prunes dried too or the ones you get in tins?

I've put both dried and tinned in... and other tinned fruit like mandarin oranges. My mum just puts golden syrup in hers - but I have had maple syrup.....

Hi, Ros3 I do not know if this is unusual or not but I like to have salted eggs with my porridge. As for my oats, I do not like anything in it except milk and sugar. Have a nice day!

How are salted eggs made and what is the difference between porridge and oats because I use oats to make porridge so I am a bit confused :)

I like to put a spoonful, or two, of jam into my oatmeal. Lately I've been finding a bunch of different flavours at the store, even a yummy cherry jam. It's really good. I also sometimes put frozen berries into my oatmeal, but thaw them first, otherwise the porridge gets cold.

Lol if you did not say that I would have put frozen berries in my porridge. I have tried jam with porridge but it is good with rice pudding so I guess it will be good with porridge I will definitely try that and the thawed "frozen" berries.

I put a bit of dried fruits and apple juice in it. It will taste fresh and light.

I guess I have kinda had it with apple juice because when i make it with soya milk the milk is sweetened with apple juice :) And the dry fruit I have try are sultanas and raisins but I am definitely going to try others after the feedback.

Well... The food I combined to it isn't very good so don't make this... I usually eat Bacon and Eggs on my breakfast and my mother says it isn't food to eat in Brazilian brakfast. So she don't buy it. I resolve to eat sausages and cheese. So I cooked it for me and she made porridge for me. We discuss for this and I resolve don't counter she. So I mixed porridge with sausage and cheese... It isn't very good and my dog ates all my breakfast...

Not too sure about that combination - sausage and cheese together sounds good but with porridge I would be scared to try it.
