14th February 2010 is a double celebration in many countries. In Malaysia, it is the first day of Chinese New Year and also the Valentine Day. I believe the restaurants will be crowded with families and young loving couples. So, how is this celebration in your country, can you feel it? Is the colour red the focus in the malls OR hearts, flowers and lovely gifts displays in the shopping centres? Love Is In the Air...the new movie coming into cinema soon called "Valentine Day"Share your views on any of this 2 celebrations. Thanks

I never thought that chinese new year will be on the 14th of February. It really means double celebration for our chinese brothers and sisters. Kung Hei Fat choi! and happy Valentines day. Here in our country the design of malls are pure hearts and red color is everywhere. I don't celebrate valentines and chinese new year but I am happy for those who are happy during that time and I am with them during their happy celebration. I hope to watch Dear John this coming valentines, but I want to read the book first hahahahahaha.

Hiya Iriene, We celebrate Saint Valentines Day and that´s it as well as the Carnivals next week which are all different in every Village or Town. They all have different styles and meanings of the same thing. Saint Valentines is mainly about buying presents for your loved one really nothing more. I would love to be able to see a Chinese New Year in as I love Fireworks and those Dragon decorations too. Have a great time though.

Dear Lovingangelsinstead, Glad to hear from you Valentine's Day is really special. Buying presents for our love ones is a way we show our appreciation to them. Thanking for reminding me, I have not celebrate this occasion for years. I think I better do some shopping for a unique and personalised item for my hubby Oh yes, fireworks will be played almost everyday for 15 days of Chinese New Year celebration. Malls also will have acrobatic show, lion dance and dragon dance to usher the auspicious new year. Thanks for sharing and do keep in touch!

Buy your Hubby a special present if you go looking long enough you are sure to find it. I hope he likes it too. Being where you live there must be lot´s of those little markets where you can find all kinds of things it would take a century to find anywhere else. Happy celebrating even though it´s next week. Take care now.

Hi Irene, Good to see you here again! I know that the Chinese New Year is celebrated around this time, but I didn't know that this year it falls on Valentine's Day as well. It could mean such a big, big event for the the Chinese people. Here in my country CNY is also celebrated in a grand way. About the V-day, well, it used to be a great day for me and my husband, but now that he's based overseas, we'll just greet each other and that's it. I don't think I want to dine out on this day with the kids as I'm quite sure the restaurants and hotels will be crowded mostly with couples. So, I'll just stay home.

Dear Doryvien, I am happy to hear from you too I remembered I and my husband (when still dating) used to celebrate Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year and my birthday which all normally fall in the same month. Those were the good old days. Nowadays, we hardly celebrate Valentine's Day as he said it is commercialised... You are absolutely right, most restaurants will be crowded and overpriced! We will go back to hometown a week earlier before Chinese New Year to avoid the heavy traffic. We also do not buy any new clothes, therefore it seems Chinese New Year can't feel much in my family. Perhaps I should do something to revive it

I think its pretty interesting to have Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year's on the same day. I wonder if it is rare that it would happen. I don't really put much interest into Valentine's Day. But I do like to have Chinese New Years because you can get great deals on Chinese foods and maybe get a lucky red envelope with some lucky money inside.

Dear nijolechu, Oh yes, all the children looking forward to the lucky red packets. I have a hobby of collecting those beautiful red packets. This year most of the red packets have the image of tiger as this year is tiger year. Next year will be the year of rabbit :) All in there are 12 different zodiac animal signs in Chinese Lunar Calendar. Glad to know you like Chinese cuisine. I believe some Chinese restaurant serve the 'fortune cookie' too. Thanks for sharing, truly enjoy reading your response!

Yes, another holiday for me!!! I don't celebrate any of this festivals, but I really like the "lion dance" held every Chinese New Year in front of my house. Although Valentine's day is actually a bad day for us Muslims, many young Muslims are celebrating it, not knowing what is the real story behind Valentine's Day. So I won't wish for Vals Day, but Happy Chinese New Year!!!! P.S: Sadly I cannot go back home this time... Stuck with final year project...

Dear deenaly, Welcome to myLot. Glad to have you (fellow Malaysian) here Oh yes, I heard some Muslims mentioned that they're not supposed to celebrate Valentine Day if they knew the original story of this day. I cannot remember the story. By the way, during Chinese New Year, most malls having discounted prices on drinks and beverages, clothes etc. Everywhere is so crowded and traffic jammed. It will be a long weekend holiday for us Malaysian. School will be closing for a week, I think! So, all the best for your project. Thanks for you wishes, happy mylotting

Hi Iriene, this year is going to be a unique dual celebrations for the first time, I think. In a multi-racial country of ours, people from all races will join the chinese in celebrating the CNY in a very grand style. The town will be painted in RED, a symbolic color for CNY and for the lovebirds. I am sure businessmen will be reaping good business for both occasions and be laughing their way to the bank.

Dear Zandi, You are absolutely right. Those businessmen will be laughing all the way to the bank. Special 8-course set dinner with 'yee sang' are out for diners. Chinese loves to eat, restaurants will be making tonnes of money. Top up with Valentine's special menu, I think 14th February 2010 will be a prosperous day for restaurants, cafe, hotels and themed eateries. Thanks for sharing, wishing you Happy CNY & Happy Valentine Day

Hi Iriene88, How have you been? Haven't seen you around for quite a while and just glad that you've started this thread. So, yes, it is a double celebration for all the Chinese around the world, as this Lunar New Year or Spring Festival is coinciding with Valentines Day. Well, as expected Chinatown is simply decorated for the occasion and festive shopping there is just awesome and crowded. Along with the movie titled you have mentioned I think there will be a debut for another much talked about movie from China - Confucius, starring Chow Yun Fatt. This year is just going to be buzzing especially with the popular restaurants and hotel F&B outlets due to the occasion and festivity. As for my family, we will heading to the newly opened Integrated Resort (IR) at Sentosa on Valentines Day which is also the first day of the Chinese New Year - been hearing a lot and I wonder if it will be as reviewed. Anyway, I'd just like to wish your family and you the best and a prosperous new year. Kong Hee Fatt Choy!

Iriene88, Well, I suppose we just cannot have everything all at the time and IR is just one of them. I heard that there's going to be further delay due to some unapproved staffing for the casinos. And it is a pity that Universal Studios could not be ready in time for the Chinese New Year but then again we can always have another excuse of going back there when it opens, right? I hope that you will be able to enjoy the dinner and squeeze in some sightseeing time this weekend. I would not be back till next Tuesday. Try to make a visit to Chinatown if you can, besides there's the subway station conveniently located at the center of Chinatown where you can also avoid the heavy traffic there. All the best for the year of the Tiger!

Dear Skysuccess, I am so happy to hear from you Kong Hee Fatt Choy to you and family too. Wow, you will be one of the privilege few to visit the much talkabout resort (IR) at Sentosa. Watching the fireworks on Valentine Day and Chinese New Year is definitely awesome! I was thinking of visiting IR too, but it is not officially open yet. I was looking forward to Universal Studio Singapore. By the way, I will be in Singapore this Saturday for my hubby company's annual dinner. So, hopefully I can visit Orchard Road to see its wonderful Chinese New Year (Year of Tiger) decoration there. All the best and wish you and family a prosperous, wealthy and healthy new year :)

Dear ypyanyan, Wow, your friend is so lucky and blessed. It is really a triple celebration, triple happiness, triple occasion! So, are you going back to your hometown to visit your grandparents? I went back last weekend (5/6/7 of February 2010) to visit my mother in law, my relatives and my father. I will be at home during this Chinese New Year to avoid the traffic jam. I will most probably go and watch some movies in the cinemas and visit my brother and sisters who stays here in Kuala Lumpur. Cheers and take care :)

So, in a few days' time, we celebrate again the Chinese New Year. This time is is the Year of the rabbit. Fro those who believe in the Chinese horoscope, there are things to do to reap the benefits of the yer and things to avoid so as to be safe and not be sorry. Do you read such horoscope predictions and dos and don'ts?

I read some of the horoscope in the Sun Newspaper. It seems this year of Rabbit is very good for those born in the year of 'dragon and rats'. Many Chinese who celebrate Chinese New Year are traveling back to their hometown. Today I saw a huge bus picking people up at the station. Many others also traveling back to take advantage of a long week holiday. So, are you joining the crowd back to hometown?
