What do do if you're victim of a house invasion?

As a kid, I remember we wouldnt even lock our doors EVER. I was brought up in the suburbs of Montreal in the province of Quebec in Canada. My dad still lives there and to this day, he leaves his doors unlocked during the day...as if house invaders work the graveyard shift only!!! I live further away from Montreal in the country and my doors are always locked. I never answer the door if I dont know the person. Theres been more and more home invasions recently and they dont satisfy themselves with taking money or electronic equipments anymore, they hurt people and even kill them. My questions are: What can be done to defend ourselves in such a situation when you take into account that guns are NOT legal here?? Have you ever been in this situation and you had to defend yourselves?

I know I can own a rifle (for hunting purposes) or say that Im part of a shooting club and then I could own a handgun but the laws are so complicated here, so much paperwork that sometimes it feels like its easier to get a handgun on the black market but thats calling for trouble. Im not one who'd like to go to jail. A rifle might be a bit too big to carry around in the house. On the news tonight, they said there was another house invasion and the people were hurt badly. I definitely need to do something. Thanks.

I believe in shooting intruders, and here in Florida, you can do it legally. If someone breaks into my house when I am home, there is a good chance that person is going to get shot.

Hi Goldeneagle, Yeah I know you can and I know you would shoot an intruder and I wouldnt blame you. If someone breaks into your house, he deserves to be shot. Wish they would get rid of this stupid law here in Canada. Thanks for your input.

If home invasion is a problem in your area, then definitely keep the doors locked as a first precaution. If you have a home alarm system, keep it on even when you are home (don't know if this is available to you, but there are some systems that even call the police for you when the alarm goes off). A good third precaution is a trusty old baseball bat, and being prepared to use it. Someone you don't know breaks into your house, you defend yourself as much as necessary to get away.

Hello Geogirl, No its not prevalent at the moment in my area, but Ive heard of home invasions in remote places, so one is never 100% safe anywhere. I dont have an alarm system. We have a rather big house with gazillions windows on 2 floors and the price to have one installed was out of this world. So decided to not have one installed. I do own 2 baseball bats. I guess I need to take them out of the garage and into the house then. Thats a great idea. Not sure why I forgot about my bats!!

My partment have public door on the first foor, it lock all the time only people live here have key can come in. But there is not any bell there, so when friends coming,it's kind trouble, he must call you first, so someone will let the door open stuck will some stuff. Although we have our own door in our apartment, it seems can easily break in. So when I first live here I kind scared all the time, worried may someone break in! Now I kind start to use to it. If I was alone and need defend myself I really don't know what to do, I think I will try to call 911 behind that person, and give him everything they want.

Hello Shan, I used to live in an apartment building but the buzzer was working fine. I dont think its a very good idea to jam the door open so that people can come in. What if a robber was to find out and slip in. Like you said, its rather easy for them to break in through a door. Someone said to keep a baseball bat, maybe you should try that if you cant call 911. At least you might hit him on the head and then run away. Good luck and try to stay safe.
