Whats the big deal with downloading free songs? When I wanted a song before cd's and internet and mp3s, I just stuck a tape in the tape player and recorded it off the radio.Did I consider it stealing? no I didnt and I had the song to listen to in my super cool walkman with the big earphones anytime I wanted to hear it.LOL even if I had the dj's voice or the song was cut off at the end sometimes, I had the song without buying it at the store.

Cause downloading free songs is mass piracy. Recording stuff off the radio was never hurting the music industry for some reason, although I'm sure a large number of people did it. It was still less people than the number that download songs online for free. And yes, it was still stealing even if you didn't think of it as stealing. Neither the artist nor the recording studio got paid, and you did not have legal permission to make a copy. I buy all my music. I think my music artists need to be fed. It's very important to feed them.

I don't understand why recording it off the radio is stealing or downloading a song is stealing if we can and do listen to it on the radio for free anytime it airs. If a song is being downloaded for personal listening then what is the difference regardless of how many people do it? It is almost impossible to take an artist's CD and download it in it's entirety. I stopped buying music when it was tapes because it was just a waste of money to buy a tape and only like one or two songs. There seriously are few artists that put together a cd worth of good listening.

Kymomo, maybe the artists you listen to get paid a lot, but none of the ones I listen to do. When was the last time I saw one of my music artists without a big plane or a big tour bus? The last time I went to a concert. In fact, one of my favorite artists had to get a job over the summer to keep her income up. And she was a SIGNED ARTIST with a CD out. Don't make the mistake of thinking that all music artists are rich. The majority of them are not. Secondly, what makes you think that they're doing it for the money even if they get paid lots? They make music because they love it, and if that wasn't the case then they might just quit. I have no problem with artists making money off me. They're honest people trying to make a living, just like us. Thirdly, just because they're rich doesn't give you the right to steal from them. Sid, radio stations have legal permission to let you listen to a song the same way television stations have permission to show you movies and libraries can give you books to read for free. The artists, recording labels, filmmakers, publishers, and authors all get money from the respective outlets, and they get the exposure they need to be able to sell more. If you had never heard a song by a certain artist before, why would you buy it? That's what the radio is for. Listening to your radio is legal, but downloading a song without paying for it is not. You can check out a book from the library and read it legally. You cannot break in, steal it, and then make copies to post online. Get it? You can legally get one song if you don't want to buy the whole CD. There's iTunes, and other great places online where you can buy music. Personally, I like buying the whole CD. I've rarely bought a whole CD and then been disappointed because I only liked one or two of the 12 songs I got.

I feel that they get payed to much. It should be about their love of music not the money. When is the last time you saw one of your music artist without a big tour bus or private plane? I was so young at the time and it was something to do so I could hear the song I liked whenever I wanted, we didnt think of whether that artist was making money off of us.

I think the thing with the radio though is that you don't really know what they're gonna play next, so it's more difficult to get the song you're looking for, and recording is a lot less convenient...That's just what I think about it.

Hi moneymaker, I havent had a tape player for years just all we had back in the 80's/early 90's. What we would do is call the radio station and request a song then keep our finger on the record button until we caught the song.I do pay for my music now unless I find it online for free legally.Have a great weekend!

Ohhh, I see what you mean...yeah, I wasn't born until the early 90's, lol, so I wouldn't know too much about the 80's....;;

The reason they call it stealing is because they no longer can control their music. They want to get paid every time someone wants to listen to their music. Their are ways to make money off of music, they can have a site where its a one time fee to pay for downloading unlimited music or even have a subscription. But of course its cheaper just to download the music for free. They should make music for expressing ideas not only for money. Money should be a bonus not a priority.

Hi spiderlizard, I agree, they should make music because they enjoy it, not only to make a profit off of it.If people enjoy it as much as they do they will be more proned to buy it for their collection.

I used to do it all the time too.. I would sit by the tape player after a DJ announced that a song would be played "sometime" in the hour.. I would wait by that record button after every song.. sometimes I would even press record.. so I wouldn't miss the beginning.. not knowing if the next song was THE song that I wanted.. WHY? because I could always just rewind and record over.. :-) I loved Tapes.. And I loved making my own mixes. It was fun.. :-)

I still have some of the old cassette tapes that I recorded when I was a teenager. I used to record my favourite songs from the radio, and that way I made my own tapes. When I went into town I always brought my walkman and my tapes, and I loved listening to music while I was walking. When I was about 16 years old I worked at my local radio station and on my last day my co-workers told me that I could bring some empty cassette tapes and record the cds that I wanted to. It was their farewell present to me, and I didn't work on my last day, I spent the entire day recording my favourite music

I still have some of my old mixed tapes too.It sounds like you had a fun last day at the radio station.This was the first way of making mixed songs, getting only your favorite without having to FF to listen to the few songs that you liked on an album.When cds came out I thought the coolest thing was that you could just skip to the song you wanted to hear.There was alot of FF and rewinding to find the beginning of the song on a cassette.

Yeah I remember those days. Unfortunately the music on our radio stations today I consider garbage and to be honest I don't want to record any songs that are played on the radio. That's why downloading free songs is becoming so popular. A lot of artists on the radio are writing music that plays to a crowd with no actual emotion or meaning behind their songs.

hahahahaha I did this too growing up! I think cds were probably starting to come out but we didn't have a player and besides, it was easy to just record off the radio. Sometimes is came in a little scratchy, there was tons of annoying rewinding to do and if you made the slightest sound the machine would pick it up....but hey!

Of course it was still stealing and who didn't do it??? But the music industry didn't try to get stereo manufacturers to take the record feature off of stereos or ban blank cassettes from the stores. I think that the internet just makes it more convenient. But I would make tape after tape after tape of songs I'd recorded off the radio... Or, I had a cable access channel that had some music video programs that would play songs that our local radio stations didn't play so I got really good at using a recorder that had a built-in mic and recording music off of the TV, then I'd have songs none of my friends had. And I still buy CD's of artists I really like. I just got tired of spending $15, $16, $17 on 12 songs and then hating 10 of them. If I am relatively sure that I will like 10 out of 12 songs then I'm more willing to buy it, otherwise, I'd rather download the two I know I like and be done with it....either legally or illegally, whatever
