Can you afford to eat fruit at your country?

Since I can remember, I have had lots of fruit at my table. They are unexpensive and full of vitamins and minerals. In my country, the typical dessert is a bowl full of fruit and you take what you want. When I was little, my parents would count the cherries in each plate and would also see that each of us had the same amount od two or three cherries bonded by the stem (we used them as earrings for a little while) When I grew up, I started to discover that nor everybody was as rich as we were and not every country had the bounty we had. The first time I discovered that not all the countries had the same qusality of fruit was when I went to Europe the first time. Even the fruit that was imported from my country (Chile) did not have the same taste as probably they took it out when it was not too ripe. Now, reading and responding here, I have noticed that in many countries there is not a wide variety of fruit or thta the fruit is too expensive to eat some everyday. How is it in your country? What kinds of fruit do you produce? Do you usually eat fruits everyday? Are fruits expensive where you live? Share. Happy posting!!!

Fruit is expensive. It all comes from Chile! Actually it depends on the season. If a fruit is in season, it's relatively inexpensive. But we do seriously get fruit from South America that is in season there but not here. Problem is, often it's picked before it's ripe and some fruits just don't ripen well once they're picked.

Come to see me in your Winter. You can skip the snow and the runny noses and we can go buy good fruit. I wonder why is it that we can´t export our best fruit. It seems it doesn´t reach well the other end of the road. If you come for Christmas you can even get to take the apricots from my tree. They are the best in the world, of course. And they only cost the detergent I use to wash my jeans more often as it´s there that I clean them before I eat them. I also know where to get good grapes for free.

In the summer I can fill the fridge with sruit for maybe $10 or $12. Right now I´m buying a lot of prunes as they are very cheap. Besides eating the for dessert, I cook with them and I cook some with lots of water and a bit of sugar to make unexpensive juice. They cost around 80 cents a kilo (that would be a bit more than 2 pounds I think). Bananas are even cheaper although we import them. In general, I will not pay much more than 80 cents for a kilo of any fruit in season. I freeze some of it to make dessets and cakes in winter. I make about 4 or 5 bif ziplock bags of halved apricots just tossing them in sugar and putting the in the bag to freeze.

Yes, my country do produced a varieties types of fruits, which we can choose from, since it's a tropical climate. I can eat oranges, bananas, apples, strawberries, mangoes and papayas throughout the year. Only certain fruits which are seasonal fruits, so we need to wait on certain time of the year to enjoy them. Those are durians, mangosteens, lychees and lots more local fruits. In my home, my parents always advice us to eat fruits everyday, for easy digestion. I had become used to it and now i still always maintain the habit of eating fruits everyday.

most of this winter I've been stuck with just apples, but now that spring is coming I'm so looking forward to more fruits - already we've seen plums and nectarines, but they are very under ripe, also the large naval oranges are back too, they got here a month before the others I'm looking forward to ripe fruit! Still, the right kind of apple is still excellent! (that would be a McIntosh)

I have always loved to eat fruit and I always try to make sure that there is some sort of fruit in our house. My children love to eat fruit as well. The thing that is sometimes difficult is that we aren't able to grow everything locally so the prices of things fluctuate very widely. One example of this is bananas which aren't grown here because we aren't tropical. However, when it comes to apples and oranges the prices are typically very reasonable so I try to always keep these in our house.

We don´t grow bananas in my country either but, for some reason, they always have a reasonable price. And the good thing about them is that they are that way all year, when season fruits we grow are too expensive. Usually 2 pounds of bananashere are around $1.

I love mangoes. They are one of my favorite fruits but they are expensive here as we import them. But I have a wide variety of chilean fruits to eat at all times of the year. And when they are on season, they are very unexpensive. We are in Summer here too and there are lots of fruit to choose from (or to mix). In Winter we have less variety at low prices. But oranges and apples are unexpensive the year around.

Hi Marguicha and all. This is a very interesting discussion.I live in a tropical country. Therefore fruits like bananas, mangosteen, pineapple, rambutan, jackfruit, papayas, and other tropical fruits are widely available with very affordable price. We also have imported fruit like grapes, apple, citrus, pear and so on.some comes with fair price, others come with unbelievable and expensive tag price.as for example you have to spend rm15 (usd 5) for 1kg of grape.im not sure it was a good gred grapes or not!But the most important thing is we can enjoy any fruits around the globe and should be no problem for having it in the market.

Hi there! We lived in the Philippines and fruits are bountiful here as well. The price is not so low nor so high. I think i just could afford to buy the fruits i wanted. Just like im saying with all my previous discussions, Im a fruit addict because here in our country, we're always having a hot climate that's why its very refreshing to eat fruits especially those that contains lots of liquids in them. They acted as a dessert, snack and thirst quencher for me especially when they came out straight from the refrigerator then after wards into my mouth! I love ripe mangoes, water melons, melons, pine apple, avocados, lanzones, bananas etc. they are some of our local produce fruits. I also love the imported ones like grapes, apples, oranges, kiwi and pears. Yes, we ate fruits everyday. A fruit addict like me cannot live without fruits even for just one day LOL! Good night!

The extra wonder of some of those fruits is that you can turn them into salads or even a main dish. I put mashed avocados in spaguetti and yhey taste delicious.

Where I live, there is plenty of fruit, and it is mostly not that expensive, especially not if you buy it in season, so that it does not need to be imported from other countries. But I think fruits have become more expensive in the past years... this really annoys me, because the prices for healthy things, such as fruits should be kept down if you ask me.

In my country many fruits are more expensive too. My country exports a lot of fruit and that makes thwm expensive for us. Fortunatly some fruits don´t travel well and those are the least expensive and usually the ones that taste better as they don´t collects them while they are green. Happy posting!

Since our country is tropical country a lot of fruits are available and can be eat naturally. Specially in the provices not really expensive fruits but ideally for our body. About for imported fruits - if you are looking it available but money in the matter, so if you want substitute local fruits are available. Natural ripe and high quality taste.

Yes. I eat fruit about once a day. And, if you count juices, I eat fruit more than five times a day because I'm an orange juice addict. I also drink blueberry juice for kidney health. One of my assistants is amazed I ever get sick because of the amount of orange juice I drink. But, I explained to her that the reason I drink so much orange juice is that my immune system is circling the toilet anyway and if I don't help it out I'll get sick even more than I do. That's so not on my agenda. I feel bad for people who can't afford to eat fruit and other healthy foods because the economy in which they live. That stuff will help you out more than medicine will in a lot of cases.

Hi my friend. I like to eat fruit and usually have it every day of the week. In my home country the supermarkets have all sorts of different fruits for sale. At the moment it is winter so the strawberries have been exported from Egypt. Often my home country gets citrus fruits from Spain and Italy. It gets bananas and pineapples from the Caribbean. In the summer the prices are low because it is home grown fruit. Right now prices for fruit that has been exported from another country are high. I like to buy strawberries, raspberries, grapes and grapefruit at the moment. Sometimes I buy passion fruit and a banana. I like to eat small oranges in the autumn time. In my home country in summer we are able to grow strawberries, raspberries, pears, peaches, apples and plums. Our country is not hot enough to grow bananas or pineapples. Passion fruit comes from the topics. Hug. Maxine

I´m glad you can afford fruits in every season. It must be difficult to be vegan if the veggies and fruits are expensive. They are a good source of vitamins and minerals but some fruits are good sources of carbohidrates too.

Hello, Marguicha. Here in Spain, fruit is very cheap from the markets, so yes, I can afford to eat it, and I do eat a lot of fruit. We have orange groves just down the road, and if they are not fenced in, you are allowed to pick the fruit, so we have freshly squeezed orange juice every morning. Strawberries are just coming into season here, so I'll be eating lots of those over the next few weeks, and also making some strawberry jam.

The prices of fruit out here is rediculous. I have not been buying much of it lately because of the cost. I am planning on buying a couple of fruit trees (peach trees) so I can cut the cost of food. I am also going to buy berry plants (mostly strawberries). Almost all food in the US are expensive. I struggle very hard to save money on groceries.

In what part of the United States do you live? When I have traveled to the United States I have found many food that are not so expensive because it seems they are foods that the residents don´t eat much. I found that people buy a lot those chicken pieces fried in oil. My stomach would rebell if I gave it that. So I have bought a whole chicken (very unexpensive) and put it in the oven with salt, pepper and a bit of real butter. I do that here too. And I make a baked stuffed chicken that is wonderful and inexpensive. Check in your plant nursery which trees will be happy in your climate. I hope it works. Berries are something you can grow on almost any climate. And if it´s too cold in winter, you can cover the plants while it´s freezing.

Fruits in the Philippines priced ok but when holidays come like Christmas or New Year or during fruit shortage, the price goes up. It's a good thing that my brod-in-law has a place in the province where they grow a variety of fruits like mango, banana, jackfruit and the like so I'm lucky that I sometimes eat for free.
