7 Essentials For Your New Personal Computer

Since I am having a few moments before I board for my flight which is being indefinitely delayed, I thought I'd use this time to say something for novice computer users or new computer owners, which I hope will be of help. I would welcome some form of alternative suggestions and / or more constructive feedbacks for my recommendations here. Again, let me assure everyone including the administrators here that this is not an advertisement or some marketing ploy for some software(s) and I do not represent any of these companies or have vested interests in any of them. However, I am a happy end user for all of the recommended apps here. So, once you have your Personal Computer be it a desktop work station, laptop, notebook or tablet computer - you may want to consider what is best for your computer and you. Most of all, all these apps are FREE OF CHARGE! So, besides that pre-installed Operating System in the computer I would recommend the following: 1. Anti-Virus Program First on the list should always about security and I know there may be some out there that just says that it is unnecessary. AVG Antivirus is by far a raved recommendation in the computer community and if you are not looking forward to spending a single cent on this app, then AVG Antivirus is really the app for you. Ref: http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage 2. Browsers I am sure many of you are aware of the various browsers available in the market namely, Chrome, Firefox, Opera or etc.. And if I may add here, just don't merely go for the browser that comes with your Operating System if you can help it. For me, I'd just say look no further just download SeaMonkey which contains the raved about Firefox browser, email & newsgroup client with an included web feed reader, HTML editor, IRC chat and web development tools. With the latter apps SeaMonkey is sure to appeal to the advanced users, web developers and corporate users as well. If IRC and web page editor is not in your interest then I'd recommend FireFox for browsing and Thunderbird for your emails. Ref: www.seamonkey-project.org/ 3. Office Suite Now before you dump a couple hundred of your hard earned dollars for your office suite apps like word processor, spreadsheets, visual presentation, graphics and database. I'd recommend that you consider OpenOffice which is also available in many languages and it works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. Most of all, it can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose. The only drawback I did observe is its spreadsheet app which unless you are a SUPER Excel user, I just do not think you will have any issue with Open Office. Besides, if you are in that category, I am sure a standalone Excel software off the shelf is much more economical in comparison to the whole office suite package. Ref: www.openoffice.org/ 4. Entertainment VLC player - so you've experienced or heard instances like your DVD player does not play the disc you've just inserted in or your media player does not play the downloaded format of your favorite song. Where, conflicts and incompatibilities will just add on your hair loosing sessions. Well fret no more, download the latest version of this VLC media player and throw in everything you've got, sit back and enjoy. You will be glad to those days are over. Ref: www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html 5. IM Client I am sure you would already be impressed with the recommendations so far that by now you feel it is time to start telling or start raving to your friends. What better way than to do it on line with an IM Client where you just need to have a universal chat client that supports every client from A to Z literally. Seriously, look at the list and be impressed here: * AIM * Bonjour * Gadu-Gadu * Google Talk * Groupwise * ICQ * IRC * MSN * MySpaceIM * QQ * SILC * SIMPLE * Sametime * XMPP * Yahoo! * Zephy With this software, you do not need to download a host of different clients and flood your desktops with these clients to chat with your friends online. Ref: www.pidgin.im/ 6. Graphics Editor How else can you place your friend's face on a celebrity body? Paint.NET is a free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins. Ref: www.getpaint.net/ 7. Anti Spyware Like AntiVirus Software, the brands are all over and I am sure you have your preference over a list of brands like, Adaware, Spybots Search and Destroy, Window Defender and many others available both online and off the shelf. Now over the years, I did use Adaware before but ever since the emergence of Trend Micro's Hijack This, removing a cocktail of spywares on the cyberway has just taken on another new level, which can be found reliable just running it alone as compared to the rest where sometimes you will need to run 2 different brands simultaneously and get into mundane and conflicting issues. Ref: http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Lastly, I am sure there may be a lot of other apps that you may need like registry cleaners, torrent downloaders, FTP clients, Zip and so on but these various clients have their niches and preferences varies with user levels, habits and most of all experiences. But I am sure most advanced and expert users will agree with me that the above are essentials for every user, here. So, I am going to stop now and welcome more suggestions and feedback here. Have a nice day.

Wow! This is a very comprehensive list that you wrote. I notice most of the software you recommend are freeware. Yes, it's so good that some of the best software come at no charge at all. Well, now that you have all the useful apps installed, it would be better if at this point, a backup is performed so that whenever things screw up, you can always revert back to the previously known working state. For this, I would recommend a commercialware known as the Acronis TrueImage backup solution. (I have nothing to do with Acronis. I don't work for it and I am not selling its products here.) As the word commercialware implies, this software is not free. However, it's definitely worth the money. What this software does is that it literally makes a backup image of your entire system. Recovering your system from the backup image is a breeze. With this backup in place, you don't have to worry about system crashes or having to go through the tedious process of reinstalling your operating system all over again.

It's a good choice, mainly composed of softwares primarily developed for Linux, except the graphic editor. Antivirus and anti-spywares are useless in Linux, but you need a good firewall in both Linux and Windows to protect your computer from hackers. I'm using the free Comodo firewall under Windows.

topffer, I am happy that you have found the list helpful. I am sure Comodo firewall is a good software as well but I just find them a bit on resource hogging. I just hope that their latest version will improve on this area or it will not pass my consideration as an essential. Thank you just the same.

What I wanted to say, is that a firewall is an inescapable tool in such a list : never mind if it's Comodo or another one. Your list is very good. I tried your graphic editor and it's a good surprise. Thanks for sharing.

I have a very similar list which certainly includes AVG and hijackthis - but highjack is a bit geeky, so I have moved on to the free version of 'MalwareBytes' now.. there is also 'microsoft security essentials' which is free and covers viruses AND sypware - it says it will conflict with AVG - but it doesn't.. I tried a number of zip applications and ended up with '7Zip' as being one of the most efficient at compressing files. Also CCleaner is my constant companion and I also use a free back-up program called 'syncback'

livewyre, I am glad that you have a similar list and another one of the 7 essentials users. Basically, I do not have any issues with "MalwareBytes" except that it is not easy to discern a doctored website than their own authenticate website. I am mentioning this because a lot of phishing and trojan scams have been riding on this software to infect end users online. So, I have my reservations here. As for zip, I feel that this is a niche issue where the end user's is being influenced by what their peers are using. I find WinRAR to be more commonly used in my country and regionally around. So, I would not impose and remain neutral here. Thank you for your invaluable contribution here.

Good list. For me, I also install ccleaner whenever I'm reformatting my PC or laptop. It's a really good software for cleaning out all the crap that your system accumulates. It's free too.

When compared with video players, I would recommend jet-audio. It is the most powerful and user friendly product. It is so much user friend that you feel like you are customizing the software for your need. I have installed both VLC and Jet-audio, but VLC never satisfied me with its operating and it is not user-friendly too. I would suggest you to COWON Jet-audio. It is available in the net as freeware.

chetanvk, Honestly, as far as quality is concern COWON Jet-audio is commendable and the app undeniably plays various music and video files, CD Burning, recording, and File Conversion. It can help you create Internet Broadcasts with JetCast. JetAudio plays most major file formats and various video or audio tracks. You can even convert audio files to various formats. A special feature is Video conversion which can make video files compatible for your portable devices such as iPOD or PSP. I am also very impressed with some thoughtful features inside like skin changeability, an alarm clock with timer and most of all the lyrics getter capability which I must say makes it even more impressive. However, if you do not want Jet Audio to your PCs default media player then you have to be careful during installation which to me is not a good criteria for new and novice users. Then, there is another quibble where it treats a playlist as an album but uses the artist as its primary key field, making it difficult to locate mixes. I just wish that they would take these feedbacks and improve on it.

Wow! Excellent information for not just new or novice users but but for more advanced users as well. Antivirus programs and antispyware programs are definitely a must for all computer users, whether windows or mac. I use MacScan for my macbook to protect myself from spyware. I use adium as my instant messenger as it is a combination of different chat programs that I use to chat with family and friends. When I used windows there was a program called Trillian that combined a bunch of those chat programs all in one. I currently use OpenOffice as my word and spreadsheet program as it does not cost anything and does the same thing as Word and Excel and other Microsoft programs. I use ITunes for my media player and love that. Everything that you recommended are very good ones for both Windows and Mac Users. Excellent topic and information.

Thanks for sharing an impressive list. For graphics editor, I like to use Irfanview which allow scanning of documents, photos and screen capture of specified part of the screen which I find it very useful. Another photo editor I use is Photofiltre though not as elaborate as other free photo-editing softwares, it allows quick adjustment of gamma correction, contrast, sharpening and so on. I also use the CD/DVD burning software CDBurnerXP a lot to backup photos to DVD, because it can help to create a multiple session for a CD or DVD rewritable.

These are all things that are very important to have for your computer. Some of the free programs that you've mentioned are fine to use, but others I've tried and had huge issues with so I would not recommend them at all. If you enjoy editing photos, I would recommend either Adobe Photoshop (very expensive I know) or the more user version of the same program which is Adobe Photoshop Elements. I've used both of these programs for digital scrapbooking and also for photo editing and I would give them two thumbs up.

I would like to make a point about Open office. If you use a screen reader like I do, you may have a problem using it from time to time. Not all modes are screen reader-friendly. And, for you fan fiction writters who love to use fanfiction.net good news formatting is fully supported using open office. Those who don't have windows, Open office has a free sister called Neo office. If you wish to directly download either one of those programs an alternitive is fanfiction.net

I am a computer tech and I agree with everything you said I like Spybots Search and Destroy because you can scan for malware and immunize your system with it too. However I think they will need a good firewall program because as you know the one that comes with windows is a piece of sh__. I recommend zone alarm because you can get it free also and is a great firewall
