Why is Philippine politics always coupled with mudslinging?

Has this anything to do with the crab mentality? I recently received an email with pictures of an alleged mansion of presidentiable Manny Villar. It is said to be in Salt Lake City. My first thought was it is just another black propaganda against him. I am not really rooting for him but then I am amazed at how people would do anything to destroy their opponents in politics. Here is where to can see the pictures -- http://fvdb.wordpress.com/2010/02/24/is-this-lavish-mansion-owned-by-sen-manny-villar/ I'm sorry if the link does not work just copy and paste it in your browser.

If you were to observe the American presidential election there was mud slinging that has happened in their place too. The primaries where the political parties were choosing who their standard bearer was Obama and Clinton was really against each other ferociously. But then when the election was over they seemed to have patched up and Obama even appointed her to an important position. In here, the only difference I see is the mud slinging does not end after election. Those that won and those that lose will continue to pull them down and could not wait until the next election.

And yes, the programs and projects of these officials are co-terminus with their term of office. A lot of times it seems such a waste that even good projects or programs are discontinued just because the official who started them is no longer in office.

this is something FIlipinos should not be forgetting, no wonder we get the same mistakes again because we tend to repeat it over and over again. which is not good for every one. like the recount of legarda and noli de castro during after the election..it's really a never ending battled foes...

It is part of the game of Philippine politics for ages, so I never wonder anymore. I was born in the family of politicians and when I was still in grade school, we already taught how to behave accordingly in public so that opponents couldn't look for any hole to crawl their issues. Sometimes, issues surface because there's such thing existed, there are issues in the lives of politicians which are very hard to fabricate. Though we believed Manny Villar is a rich politician, we never know what's inside his intestine, I mean the real him. Those controversies thrown in him might be true, or if not, why can't he just directly answer those things? I am afraid of this man, because even if he is not yet elected as president, he already has loaded of controversial issues, mostly about money, tagged in his name, gosh, how much more if he become a president? If he couldn't answer straight to the point those issues, then how much more if he holds the highest position in the country? oh well, I don't know what else to say.

Hi jlamela, I am sure you would have no cause to wonder about this situation anymore because all your life you have had first hand experience about this aspect of politics. I say aspect as it seems that this dirty business has become an inseparable part of politics already.

You're not the only country that does this. Here in the U.S., they've taken mudslinging and turned it into an art. It's ridiculous what candidates will do, even picking on an opponent's children!

It is sad that children have to be dragged into the mud of politics but it seems it is now an inescapable reality for the families of politicians.

hello blungel despite of me hating manny villar and a GORDON-ian supporter, that pictures are fake and a hoax and does not owned by manny villar. that's part of politics, but what made me hate villar and his goons is they're boycott to the last days of senatorial session. meaning, they're hiding something, people aren't that stupid to realize.

Yes, I know that the email was a hoax and that the mansion does not belong to Manny Villar. People who want to tear an opponent down will resort to all sorts of things to discredit their political opponents. The whole thing is so negative. We can only wish that politicians will start building rather than seek to destroy, this way everybody benefits.

hi! i got that too. when i look at it, i merely said, "so what?" he's a businessman. as if not everyone's doing that. if i'm in that position, business, money as in filthy rich, why can't i have the taste of it? when we watch telenovelas with business tycoon characters, along with their mansions and islands and popularity, not to mention the good looks, we simply say wow. why can it be with this one then, if this allegation could be true. :)

by the way, publicity, whether good or bad, is still a publicity. it's only sad that popularity is not an issue here anymore but the credibilty of the person to have the sense of leadership and to run the country. i've been receiving black propaganda txt messages from strangers with different numbers and different politicians. i just ignored them and not forwarded to anyone else because it's not going to help people to make the right decision in voting. if these allegations were true, be it texts or e-mails, they can always show pieces of evidence without revealing their identities if that what they're affraid of. so what's their basis? oh, please dont get me wrong. am not promoting senator villar here, i am merely encouraging people to vote a leader that can really lead. to be objective away from favoritism. oh, well, it's like cancer. sad but true. :)

it's simple kabayan. It is because they can't say good things about themselves so they say bad things on their rivals.

These things WILL ALWAYS happen when election is fast approaching. I did receive this email as well. I also received spam mobile text messages against Noynoy linking him to Ping Lacson.
