I guess Walmart in my area eliminated their fabric section

I was at Walmart earlier, and they had no fabric. I hardly ever brought fabric from them so no big deal. The odd thing though they still have a lot of sewing accessories. I guess they are probably just keeping them until they are sold out.

The Walmart in my area really slimmed down on their fabric. They still sell some, but their really isn't much variety. No good for me, though, because I'm a sewer. There is a small fabric shop right down the road from me, but it is much more expensive than Walmart. I guess Walmart wasn't selling much fabric, because let's face it, not too many people sew these days. I kind of wish more young people would get into sewing, though, it's very relaxing, and it is such a FUN hobby. Maybe they should create some kind of sewing video game, haha.. That's a sure way to get the youth sewing again!

The video game is a cool idea. There are two fabric stores less than five minutes from house so no big deal about purchasing fabric.

The price of cotton is going to go through the roof apparently in the very near future. So, probably Wal-Mart decided to get rid of fabric if they couldn't get it at a low enough price for their liking. The Wal-Mart in our town got rid of fabric too. Not that I would give Wal-Mart 2ยข for fabric or anything else. I only go in there because my boyfriend just loves shopping there. He's always saying, as long as we're here, you can get some of the grocery stuff, but I refuse to hand over a single penny to Wal-Mart xoxo Cyne

Oh and the video game idea is great. There is one, but it's for very little girls called My Fashion Studio. I think there's another fashion one out there, but I'm not sure. It'd be nice to see more practical games for girls along the crafting line. For now it seems like they cater only to ponies and pets etc. xoxo Cyne

Wow, I guess I'm lucky, our Walmart still has 3 aisles devoted to materials and sewing supplies. Gee, I sure hope ours doesn't follow suit and get rid of the fabric! I'd be lost seeing as the next closest fabrics store is a half hour drive at best. I got some really cool Thomas the Train fabric to make bedroom curtains and accessories for my one grandson. If I would have purchased it at a different fabric store it would have cost me so much more. They had some John Deere tractor/farm design fabric I looked at last time I was there (we live on farms so it's the grandkids fave theme lol). Sure hope they still have it! Maybe out where we live (mostly farming & Amish areas) the fabric sells better and they will keep this department fully stocked.

Oh I hate to be the bearer of bad news BUT....the sewing department manager at our store told me they were phasing out the fabric by June. I would ask your sewing department manager if this is going to be in your future, you can always complain to the main office in Arkansas. EVERYTHING WalMart does comes from the main office! We live between 2 WalMart stores and the one to the North of us has 2 fabric stores in town. They kept the fabric before when they were going to close it out. Our store to the south of us has no other fabric stores for at least 25 miles and when they went to the New Super Center, they took out all the fabric. There were so many customer complaints that they restocked it, but not to the extent of the other store. So unfortunately the location and competition has nothing to do with it. According to Home Office they have to sell so much of an item per square store foot to keep it in their store, and that is what determines what they have in the store. If you have to go to other fabric stores, JoAnn Fabrics has a mailing you can sign up for and it has coupons. Also coupons from Michael's can be used at JoAnn's and JoAnn coupons can be used at Michaels' although I would check your stores to make sure they honor this. They do here in Michigan although I did have the cashier tell me "most people don't know this." Good luck to you.

You said the magic word, the closest store is far so they are not going to close yours out unless they get some competition.

Hello friends. I have some information to pass on to you about the WalMart fabric. There is an online petition that you can sign, free, to protest the removal of the fabric at WalMarts. The link is: http://www.PetitionOnline.com.save/fab Hope that this will help you if you are interested or pass on to others that might be. Thanks

WalMart started this several years back of doing away with the fabric. There was a large protest about it so they brought some back, but yes they are doing away with it again. They are going to keep carring the accessories. I liked their fabric because a lot of it was the same as JoAnn fabrics but the price was much less. I have bought a lot of fabric at Wal Mart and was always happy with it, and not happy that they are not going to continue selling it. Probley without the fabric I will not be shopping there much anymore. I think these last few years they have cut back on their selection of products. I know there are things that I have to go to other stores and get because they don't carry it. For instance cake mix. They carry Betty Crocker cake mix but not all the flavors. I had to go to a different store to get the cherry chip, spice, and triple fudge, in Betty Crocker.

our walmart did the same..the thing that sucks though is there's no other place local to buy fabric.i'll have to buy from the 'net now,i'd prefer to be able to look at it in person though.

I would not like that. I want to look at it to know how it "feels". WE live about 25 miles from any direction that has fabric. But for it to go out of the town south of us, it will be almost another 25 miles to drive. Best of luck to you.

That's probably what they are doing. I noticed that ever since our Walmart became a Super Walmart we no longer have a purse department, shoe department, fabric department or pajama department.

Your Walmart does not sound like a fun place. I cannot imagine a store without a purse department.

You are right. Once they have went to the Super Center's they have really ruined the stores. I think they have added more departments but cut back on the quanity of what they have in them. I have moved to doing more and more shopping at Meijers. I thought these were national stores too, and I called my friend in Florida and told her to go to Meijers and see the new blouses they had in and she informed me that they don't exist in the south! oops, I guess they are Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. To bad, I been shopping there more and more.

I was never that impressed with WalMart's fabric selection in the first place, but it was convenient.

Yea, not the greatest fabric selection. I think I brought fabric from once or twice.

The one wal-mart supercenter that is an hour away from me in PA got rid of their fabric section about a year ago as well. I used to love to go and look through all the material and buy some of it when it was on sale. The wal-mart supercenter that is closer to me in NY still has their fabric section. I love the prints that they have.

There was talk of this a few years back. I have visited several WM that have. Mine has not yet. But who is to say. The $1.00 is now $1.50. I hope to keep it as we have many amish in our area, that may help.

Most of the walmarts in my area have gotten rid of the fabric section as well except for one location.
