how far can you take on a joke?

i remembered once i forwarded a message to my friends through my cellphone saying sorry to inform you that we found out that your birth in this world is a mistake. kindly go to the nearest health department to get terminated. thank you for your cooperation. most of my friends had a big laugh about it but there were one or two got offended by the message. i thought that this message will be very obvious to be recognized as those forwarded types of message having no serious intention. i just don't understand why would some people take it so seriously? what do you think? will you get angry if you receive one?

Sometimes we often find out about how sensitive our friends are in jokes. I myself would laugh it off. There are even far more worst joke that others can come up. At times you even think of it as a prank but you still laugh it off just for the fun of it. In my case, i received a joke from a friend telling me that i won in a lottery. There was a number included that i should call to make a claim. I immediately called the telephone number provided to which i found out that it's a mental hospital's number. I forwarded the same joke to a friend of mine i guess what she called me and told me nasty things . But it never ruined our friendship.

I was wise enough not to continue with the call and talk to a real person. I realized that I've been had as i was listening to the recorded information that i have called a mental institution. I was able to hang up the phone before it was connected to the operator .

Not everyone would have the same sense of humor. It might be funny to others while it can be down right offending to another person. Some jokes would be funny while it can also be not funny to the same person at a different period in time. Perhaps they could have laughed at it when their disposition in their life grants them to be positive and humorous. There are those who might be not that fortunate and are considering that their lives are quite meaningless so, receiving a joke like that could just very well amplify their hatred towards their own existence as well as to those around them that don't value their presence. There are also other jokes that wouldn't work on those who have experienced something tragic to a loved one or to someone they know so getting a joke that would be related to such an event would fume their emotions.

I guess you can be careful next time to whom your going to send jokes to. They might have a different sense of humor. Knowing what makes them laugh would really be something that would later on benefit your advantage

Even though it was meant as a joke, it's easy to understand how some people could be offended. It's kind of like a slap to a person's ego when you say they're a mistake and should be terminated.

It's so ridiculous that's why it's a joke. I have gathered a collection of pot-shot jokes and at one time I thought they were hilarious, but sharing them wouldn't be appropriate. Here are a few one-liners. *If I throw a stick, will you leave? *You! Off my planet. *Does your train of thought have a caboose? *I'm trying to imagine you with a personality. *I'll try being nicer if you'll try being smarter. *You are validating my inherent mistrust of strangers. *I'm not being rude. You're just insignificant. Someone with a tough hide would take them with a grain of salt and get on with their day. Others are more sensitive...and will take those comments personally.

they said that i am saying that they are born before their parents marriage and have no value of living, something like that. how come they would have such a thought from a simple humourous message?

luckily most of my friends get the simple humorous message. if all of them think like this minority, then i would stop sending text message to anyone.

There's a very similarity between a joke, irony and sarcasm... You have to be careful with that. When you did this kind of "Joke", you're not on the other's mind to verify their reaction, they could think it was sarcasm or irony and this is not at all fun. It may depends also on which kind of person you have sended the message, you must know them very well. At least, they must be your friends and not colleagues. For instance, you're not supposed to send something like that to someone you've met "yesterday" or is not so close to you.

20 Mar 10
Responding your question, if you were my friend, then I would probably lol. However, if you were someone close, for example colleague, I would think "what the hell he did mean with that?". Finally, if I was someone that you've met once in a while, I would be probably angry, because I could think you're making fun out of me.

good advices, friends. i will definitely take all these points into consideration before sending any text jokes in the future. but for sure, i would first exclude the ones who felt offended previously. then out of the remaining, i would choose who to be sent to.

Hii... I don't think there is anything offensive in your text message.. It is a simple joke, which should be taken lightly and I would have thanked you for making me laugh. I wonder, what kind of people would get offended at such funny jokes.. And yet, we can't forget that the world is full of weirdos, who find offense in lightest things too.. Anyways, simply ignore them and have a good laugh at them too...

Hi victorywp, I would consider it a great joke and probably send it to most of my friends. As we all know, people aren't all alike and some would be upset by it. The thing to remember is that I might be offended by something that they would consider a joke - strange about us humans. Blessings.

I can definitely take a joke, as long as it's not derogatory.. if I'm the one receiving a text from you about that joke there, I'd laugh like crazy. I love a good joke anytime and any day and I don't see anything to be offended there at all. Good topic.

I can easily take jokes in stride. Though some of the jokes made by people are half meant. But, there are those jokes with pure humor as the intention. A good example would be the text message that you mentioned. One would know that the tone is sarcastic and it is just for the purpose of having a laugh. I guess there are just those people who are super sensitive to take those kind of jokes seriously. One could say that those people have issues with themselves that they take offense at the thought that their existence were a "mistake". I think we can just also try and be sensitive to those people we think could take jokes like this seriously. That's all I can say, I guess.^_^

yeah, i do think that they are super sensitive. maybe i would not send any humourous text message to them again in the future. i just don't know how they would be interpreting my text message.

Humor can be a tricky thing. I love and highly value a good laugh, but a lot of so-called humore I don't find funny. I wish I laughed more easily and more often. While I understand the humor of this, I also know that if I received this on a bad day, I wouldn't find it funny. I might even wish it were true so my troubles would be over. So, I would never send this kind of thing to my friends since I would have no way of knowing where they were mentally that day. I know too many people struggling with way too much to take that chance. By choice, I only send out uplifting and inspiring material, and not too much of that. My friends appreciate it and receive it well. If a piece of humor delights me, I gladly share, knowing it will likely delight my friends, too.

i would never such a joke to any of my friend. I get all type of jokes from some or the other friends but do not send same messages to all other friends. I choose the joke to send to someone only if I know what would be reaction. This joke is not at all healthy to be sent. I have a friend who will read this sms and abuse me with a loud laugh but others may take this seriously, the end result of sending this sms joke may be very bad and i may not be able to handle that. No such jokes to be sent from my cellphone.

No I will laugh at it too. Who can tell me that my birth in this world is a complete mistake. I know it is only a joke. Being here in this world means you have a purpose. Maybe that person you are talking about are having a bad day that is why they did not get the joke in it. If the person who forwarded the message to me is a natural joker then it is a joke for me, but if he is an enemy I will just delete it and let it slip away.

Some people can't take jokes and you must be careful to choose people who you can share jokes with. A joke to us may not be considered jokes for these nerds. They really need to go to the school of jokers to have more fun in life. It happened to me here when I responded to a discussion with a bit of humor and I was shocked to get a sarcastic remark from the starter of the discussion. I conclude that our Asian jokes might not go down well with the mentality of some western cultured people.

for some people it depends on their moods while receiving such messages, while for others, it depends on their personality(their way of looking at things), yet, there are those who will mind if such messages come from a certain source! But ultimately, why take everything so seriously? I guess one should leave such people to their glum faced seriousness, since they're too 'busy' or too 'dignified' to have a meaningful view of life and laughter. The old adage is true, laughter is the best medicine.... but some people prefer poisons of somberness... let's live and let live...!!!

Hi well this happened with my friends too. But my person suggestion is a joke is a joke. But why does a joke needs to something that teasing about oneself. Any Jokes or comedies should be enjoyable by both one who send and receive. Unless it hurts any one personally, its no more a joke. People thinks making fun of some body or their friends is a joke. Will they accept if the same words are said my a stranger! So, jokes should make us enjoy, but without hurting anyone personally.
