At what age should a child get his/her ear pieced?

Personally I don't think age is a real big issue. I think little girls look adorable with their ear pieced. I probably would wait till year 1 at least but for the most part I don't think it is an issue. What about everyone else.

I know alot of people get their little girls ears pierced when they are very small and it does look cute I guess, but I must be old fashioned. I waited until my daughter was old enough to decide for herself, if she wanted holes put in her ears. She was also old enough that it was a shared experience that became a memory for her of a day we shared together, getting them pierced and picking out earrings and her learning how to take care of them herself.

Here in the Philippines I think it's about right to say that every single baby girl gets their ear pierced before they reach 6 months old. I'm not sure of the explanation as to why a piercing is needed at such a young age, but if you're going have it done to your baby, at least do it while it's all skin and it can heal easily. My daughter was almost 6 months when we got her ear pierced because I was putting it off a bit and i kept forgetting to ask her pediatrician whenever we took her for a shot or a check up. I even know a kid who at the age of 8 had 3 holes pierced in her ear. I guess her mother was getting prepared for when she would see her daughter get her ears pierced. Sort of like, well you're gonna get them anyway, so you might as well get them now!

When HE or SHE is able to make a conscious and informed decision as to whether he/she actually wants them pierced. Children are human beings, little people, not dolls to be decorated at the whim of their parents/guardians.

i don't think there is a minimum age,but me personally,i wouldn't get them done between the ages of 1-3 years, because at that age they are more likely to play with the earing and get it infected, before of after that age is fine

Piercing ears was a big issue amongst my friends. All of us were from the same culture with parents in the same generation . . . all whom really didn't like the idea of piercing ears. So all of us didn't get our ears pierced til our near teens! I remember one friend got her's done as a graduation present from 6th grade. Many of us got our ears done when we graduated 9th grade (junior/middle school). A couple didn't get theirs done til after high school. I have a friend who got them pierced for the first time in her 30's! Then there is my sister who never had her ears pierced and proud to say she still never has. I wouldn't pierce my daughter's ears - she is now 5 . . . we'll talk it over when and if she ever decides on her own that she would like to have her ears pierced.

You don't have to wait for a year to do that. Besides by that time your baby will be able to fight with you when she feels the pain. My daughter had her ears pierced when she was 2 1/2 mos. She cried but she can't fight or kick. But don't pierce it yourself, let your Pedia do the task and make sure that the earrings are hypo-allergenic.

Hi wickedlove, My little cousins got their ears pierced at a very young age, as early as 3 months old. I got mine when I was four years old. I don't think age matters when getting ears pierced, however, in the case of my little cousins, their mothers want to get their ears pierced early coz it's a good distinction of the gender of the baby, coz most newborns look alike.
