As I am new to this field, can anyone please tell me why we should compress a file, a video file into .rar file when we upload it in the web for others to download. Which is better? to compress or not to compress.

It's better to compress a file especially when it is a big one. Compressed files become much smaller than the original files, this way occupying less space. The reason of compressing files is increasing uploading and downloading speeds, that is to make use of them more rapidly.

try to compose an email which contains .exe file . well you cant. so u can compress the file into zip or rar and send it via email.also in reduced size so less wait time to upload.

Several of the responses have mentioned that it is done to use less storage space and to, thus, take less time, etc. to upload and download. Also, someone mention that it makes it possible to split a large file into smaller parts. With rar there is also another use and that is to place a password on the file so that only those people that you give the password to can open the file.

phynx15 a lot of us do not have unlimited disk space so to conserve space on your disk you should compress. If you have good rar unloaders you will have no problem anyway. some rar files would take up tons of space so its best to compress them into rar files.for a lot of us the other way would really fill up our disks unless we had a lot more space.

you could compress the file to just reduce the size of file and this file can further be used to upload and download on internet faster using lesser bandwidth. the person who download the file will uncompress the file to get the original video

Compressing files that are for download is usually done for 2 reasons. If you compress data then it will occupy less space and take less time to download . It is also the easiest way to split a file into several parts so that someone can download a large file in parts rather than all at once.

I think compressing a file has many benefit for our storage system and also for make the file sharing become easier. Some files could become smaller in size so we can save more space on our storage. Compressing file can make a big file split into some smaller parts so we can share or upload those files to the internet easily. Especially if we have small bandwidth on our internet access, compressing a big file is a good idea for file sharing. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

I think the fastest file for downloading is rar/zip files. So it's the right way to upload files. Happy mylotting.

It's easier to upload a compressed file because it takes less bandwidth on web traffic. It's like putting an elephant thru a manhole is harder than putting a mouse there. Got the picture?

It depends on connection speed. People with low connection prefer rar files. They can't download whole 1GB file in 30 minutes. Also it's usable for flash disk. If you have 1GB flash disk you can't put 2GB file into it. So you can move rar files there. Next time move rest of the files.
