It has been told that those who read a lot are intelligent, imaginative and yet much more aware of their surroundings .Reading sharpens your brain cells and make them active which is essential. I feel that the more you read, the more open you become in your thinking. One tends to view things differently as one gains more knowledge about people, places and other people’s behavior. This develops a person's imaginative skills and Reading definitely enhances a person’s thinking; he becomes more aware of his surroundings and understands things better... what do you all think friends? plz share your views...

I think I generally agree with your point. The problem is, not many people are really drawn to reading. And I think some people are only forcing themselves in the habit. I admire people who have the genuine interest of learning from books and have a real passion for reading.

That's also something I've noticed recently. I've been trying to help promote a love for reading with my nieces and nephews. It actually seems to be working. My 1-year old niece can often be found in a random corner with a book, trying to read it. She loves being read to as well. Her older brother (age 3) also loves reading. I'm hoping more people can be drawn into the pleasures of reading. There are a huge variety of books. My brother isn't an avid reader, but he does find certain books he can't put down. You just have to find something that suits your interest. Unfortunately, some people just don't make the time for that despite the benefits and pleasure derived in the end.

I agree with both your view points.there are not many people reading books nowadays. in the past 4-5 years I have seen a number of circulating libraries closing shop because the number of members had dwindled .. I feel that one should cultivate the habit of reading from childhood by gifting books to children and making them take an interest in reading ..

I really love this discussion that you have created as I agree with everything you say and I also love to read myself, I read a lot! I only ever feel whole as a person when I am deeply engrossed in a good book and this is very healthy for the mind! I'm a member of a book club called World Books and I love purchasing new books from them occasionally. I think one of their mottos is: read to live and live to read! Whatever I am reading I always feel at one with the character! For a short amount of time I feel part of their world and I experience what they experience! Reading definitely makes you more intelligent and increases your wit! I also think that this improves your intuitive abilities which is a necessary skill in today's world! Anyway, I love reading fiction as well as non fiction and I'm also into computer books as this is my main field of study. I think another good thing about regular reading is you get to access this person or this character's life even though it may be fictional you are still entering their world and sharing their life experiences as created by the author. Reading is my life and to suddenly have to survive without this would truly be devastating! My dream is to have a lovely home with a huge library, I guess this is the shared dream of many people! Yes, I love reading and reading loves me, we're a real team! Andrew

Reading definitely frees our mind. Understandably, we throttle our own minds with our convictions. These beliefs make our mind be closed to any new information or perspective. By reading, we exercise our minds and let it be as flexible as possible. It is quite exciting to learn about new things or find a different take on an old issue. Perhaps if everybody stopped reading along time ago, we would still be stuck with the notion that the earth has edges. Being inquisitive should be encouraged with our children. The younger they start, the harder they will be bound by the beliefs that adults harmlessly pass on to them.

TV no doubt has its use, afterall there is a lot of information and knowledge on many TV channels...It is the same as books I feel , one has to choose what to read and what not to read...TV is of course much more addicitve because of the visuals ...

Well, I agree that reading improves a person and has innumerable benefits. WHILE I agree that a person becomes sharper in grasping things I am not sure whether this increases awareness of a person's surroundings.Personally speaking, I am a big dreamer and my husband's frequent complaint is that I never walk on the ground and due to my innate positive th inking and approach, I keep looking at everything with a benevolent eye an d thereby some people take me for a ride very easily.

LOL kala, I am a little like that...I have a fertile imagination and this makes me over confident at times about the outcome of things and also about people's reactions. But I feel that it is better to be that than be a negative ,morose , and an ever doubting person...

I think that reading does expand the mind and knowledge. It helps us with creativity and even helps us with understanding more what a person is trying to convey. It opens us up to more possibilities as we learn more. Book that are fictional are more of those that help with creativity while the ones that help with knowledge are usually nonfictional.

I think that can be true. If you're one who reads really deep, insightful books than yes it's definitely true. But if you're someone who reads serial paperbacks or celebrity tell-alls or something it may be less so.

Hi oilsaur, I agree that what we read does make a difference, but reading anything is better than not reading at all. Once the reading habit develops , one does become choosy , it may be any subject - I personally feel that there is knowledge everywhere and in everything.

I definitely agree through reading we can reach places, learn cultures, we can time travel, we can communicate with the environment, etc. It sharpens our comprehension of things and it exposes us to different avenues of knowledge.

It is indeed really you be intelligent, imaginative and more aware of our environment to those who read a lot! what an interesting topic you discussed here! I've been thinking of all the scenarios of what will happen in a certain situation or the person's behavior depends on the situation... I know some will think I'm being paranoid so I will think of it on my own and not to say it to anybody... If the outcome is true then it does make a sense but if its not... at least I am aware of and know the consequences...

while i agree with you about how people who read a lot tend to be intelligent, imaginative, etc.. but i am a bit sceptical of it working the other way around. maybe that sounds a little confusing what i'm getting at is.. now that we think people who read a lot is generally, in some ways, better; others might think that it is reading that turns a person to become more intelligent and imaginative and more aware. it could.. but i think the person is more likely to have interest in reading even before they know how to read. like some have mentioned, reading books to them when they were kids. even more confusing now lol :P

Yes agreed ! Intelligence is more to do with genes that we inherit...But as you say a person can develop a well rounded personality and become more knowledgeable and thereby more interesting when he/she reads books...

right.. and people of less intellect might not always become more intelligent from reading. knowledgeable, but not necessarily more intelligent but reading is a good habit anyway

I do agree with some of this, though it also depends on what exactly you read. Some books, I've noticed, actually cause people to become more close-minded. It limits their level of acceptance because the book itself sort of promotes that. This is no different than certain television shows. Some educate you and aid in learning, comprehension, empathy, whilst others do the opposite. Unfortunately, I'm pulling a blank for a quick off the top example. Sorry. However, I do agree, seeing as how books--many, at least--explore different cultures and allow people to accept them and better understand them.

Hi, yes it depends on what you read. But reading in itself is gaining some knowledge.I was talking to a relative , an old professor the other day and he was telling me that after reading up almost everything during his life time, he is now reading local glossy magazines and find them entertaining no doubt but so shallow...If one has a genuine interest in books , one automatically would like to explore various fields and gain knowledge...

yes,i think so,reading will get more knowldge,or it doesn't just gain knowledge, you can use them to extense your thinking, your ability will improve imperceptible. One graduate from junior high school and one from college, their world and life outlook are quite different. It decides their life attitude and style, even decide their fate. You are easier to communicate with understanding one more than the opposite one. The reading one has stronger understanding ability. It's not definite, but almost.

i believe this to be true, actually. people who reads a lot are more intelligent in many ways - they seem to have been able to travel to where the writer has described, it is like being in the book setting that you were reading... it is also a great mind exercise... it helps you think a lot!

I agree with you that people who read a lot are one step higher than those who rarely read. They are imaginative and worldly knowledgeable. Having an imaginative mind is one of those rare things which cannot be collectivized. I read a great deal on any printed materials that I can get hold of. But I am still thirsty of knowledge and I don't seem to be able to filled my knowledge bank.

hi kiran8, I agree with your post here. I love reading ever since I was a kid. There is not a single day that my mom won't find me alone in my room reading some books. I still remember how she scolded me those times because I just spend my time reading and reading and forgetting all the stuffs she asked me to do. But of course, as of now, I am grown up and aware of my responsibilities so I always make sure that before I sit down and read some pages, I already did what my mom asked me. Anyway, back to the topic. It is a great advantage if one is a good reader. I can say that during my elementary years, I am quite smarter than the others because I have wider vocabulary than them. I also can express myself clearly because I know what word to use.Well, it is because I learn a lot from reading. Even now, I am still at the habit of reading. And I am happy that I am earning from my hobby. I know I can participate well on the discussion because I have idea what to say. I am also publishing articles on different online sites and it is because I have idea what to write.

Hi Kiran8, I think your 99.9% right. I didn't learn how to read until I was in high school. Something happened to me and I shut down in a way. I learned to read people by the things they said and done. Because it was some one in my family that hurt me. I don't trust anyone. Sorry I got off the subject. What I was trying to say is you can learn a lot about people without knowing how to read. I read a lot more now mainly kids books because I have two boys.
