I expand my vocabulary through reading. I love to read books, magazines, newspapers and anything which has written text on it. Even labels of shampoos, soaps, bottles, signboards, anything. Because of that, I become familiar with so many words. They said that reading do a great help for a person to widen his vocabulary. Even mylotting helps me to gain more difficult words that become helpful also with me in communicating. How about you? What is your way of expanding your vocabulary?

I also love to read books whenever I have the time. But if I don't have the time then I make sure to open the dictionary then read 2-5 words randomly and sometimes use it so that I can remember what its meaning is. Good day!

thanks mavieserrano, I remember more the unfamiliar word once I use it in a sentence rather than just looking up for the meaning of it in the dictionary.

As of now, I don't have much time reading books as I used before. However, I think I am starting to read again books now that I will be taking up my Master's Degree. Few hours will be given on working online and I will spend other hours for my studies. I also do what you said. I look for words that is not familiar and then check it on the dictionary. Using those words in sentences is a great way not to forget them easily.

I read a lot and I think that is a great way to learn new words. When I discover words that I don't know I look them up in the dictionary. When I was younger I had a notebook where I wrote down the new words that I learned, now I just look them up and try to remember them. I love to play words games online, and I think that is a nice way to learn something while I am having fun. Some of those games are pretty hard, but it is fun anyway. If I read an article online I also look up the words that I don't know.

One of my favourite sites is www.sheppardsoftware.com Some of the games on that site are for children, but there are also games or flashcards for adults. I use the words from the SAT test. Another site is www.manythings.org There are several word games on that site, some of them are easy and some of them are very hard.

The most common way that I like to expand my vocabulary is by playing scrabble. I also like to read the dictionary nad browse encyclopedias. Over all, the dictionary is the best. Mylot has helped a bit. I find with the vast array of cultures that the MyLot members originate from, gives way to many different ways to express, use of different words and the formation of those words. Some I had never thought of before being on MyLot.

Hi annie, it does help greatly, yes. I even find the dictionary that I use when I play scrabble, called a scrabble dictionary, fun to read as well. I am unsure of other word games at this time. I apologize. Anyone else know of any games that help enhance one's vocabulary?

Like you, I expand my vocabulary by reading. If I come across a word I don't know, I look it up immediately. Here's another way to expand your vocabulary. It's fun, and it's also a chance to do a good deed for others. It's a website called www.freerice.com. At the website, you play a vocabulary game. For each vocabulary question you answer correctly, the website donates 10 grains of rice to a program that works to combat world hunger. It doesn't cost you anything, and you get to learn new words. You can also choose quizzes in subjects like math, geography, and foreign languages. If you haven't tried it yet, you really ought to. I really enjoy it.

I expand my vocabulary through reading too, though I can't say I read the variety you do. I mostly stick to books. If I don't know a word I'll look it up. If I like the word then I'll try to use it myself until it's a integrated part of my vocabulary.

I'm not sure my brain has any more room for my vocabulary to expand at my age, but for someone who wants to expand theirs I would recommend playing Scrabble against the computer.

I can only think of reading when comes to method to expand vocabulary. Ones can also add in more words in brain when starts to read more. I have this problem all this while, I am lazy to read, hence my vocabulary is very limited. Laziness is my obstacle to overcome. Maybe it's time for me to read more starting today. Cheers.

I believe that we can improve more if we develop the habit of reading. As our body needs exercise to be healthy, our minds need books to be wealthy. I say so because the more a person learns things, the more he become intelligent. He can participate in different topics because he gained ideas from different reading materials. He won't be disparaged by other people because they know his intellectual skills. Have a nice day

Are you learning different languages? As of now,I am striving hard to expand my vocabulary not only in English but also in Spanish. I love it knowing many words and having the power to communicate effectively not only in English but also on other languages. Mylot helps us to improve more of our vocabulary. This site is composed of people with such great intellect that makes me stay more and enjoy here. From reading different discussions, I encounter words that I do not know exist in the dictionary. After that, of course I will look for it on the dictionary and make it a part of my life.

Well, my first option is reading, especially books or novels. I'm not fond of reading the newspaper and magazines though =P Second option is through forums like this one. It helps me practice my grammar and at the same time, encountering words that I'm not familiar with. =)

There are lots of ways on which we can improve our vocabularies. Reading discussions here in mylot, participating and commenting back helps us to practice the new languages we are learning. I also agree with you with the grammar, however, there is rare instances that mylotters do correct grammars being posted. For me it is to avoid hurting fellow mylotters on what he is posted. Thanks for participating.

Well, there are other ways that can help you improve your vocabulary if you are not inclined in reading. You can listen to English music. I find that one enjoyable. You can also watch English movies to be particular with different words. You can also play games like scrabbles for it will enhance your bank of words. Talking to English native speaker people will be also of great help.

That's a good exercise even if you're learning other languages. I also have done it several years ago, but I didn't listen them only neither, I tried to write down the text I listened. Sometimes I had to listen a special word for several times until I caught it to write down. I always try to combine all sense (in this case hearing/listening) with some excercise to build up all new knowledge to assure that I won't forget it any more.

I really need to expand mine. The best way to do so is to do alot of reading especially from newspapers and certain magazines and make sure you have a dictionary handy. Usually alot of these words will come up many times in these magazines and newspapers and when you constantly read it and research the meaning eventually when you see the word you will know what the meaning is and you will know how to use it in a sentence. I used to use the SAT verbal flashcards that came in the books, it really did help.

I can see that you are doing your best to expand your vocabulary. Seeing the word, looking for its function, getting its meaning, and utilizing it in everyday conversation makes us remember that word.I have observed that if I only search for its meaning,I easily forget it. However, once I use it in a sentences and try to include it on daily conversations on in writing my articles, it strengthen my memory.

My vocabulary is large enough, as it is, to get by in today's society, however, I always look to expand my knowledge and overstretch my already inflated ego. ;) I used to make it a habit to look up a random word in the dictionary, every week. That seems to work for people that do not want to read a dictionary for a living. My Father used to make me copy words out of the dictionary, as a child, so I'm not much into looking through one, unless it is required.

Reading is a great and beneficial hobby. Especially if we know how to choose reading materials which will equipped us with proper knowledge, we will learn more. It improves our skills in different areas. It makes us communicate effectively with other people by providing us useful vocabularies.Listening in English music and watching English movies is also advisable if a person is not that inclined in reading.

I love to read newspapers or some current events, and if I found words that I'm not familiar with, I would list it down first and get a dictionary and get the meaning of it. I also think talking to a lot of people who are native speakers of English would also help a lot.

Every time I sign in on my yahoo messenger, it will show additional dialog box. I can check there my mails and the latest new about the country I am living with. I am very fond of reading it. Just like you, once I spotted a difficult word, I will not let the day pass without me knowing what is the meaning behind that word. Once, I get the meaning of it, I will look for example sentences of it. That way, I comprehend more the word and make it a part of my every day conversation.

That is good too. However, I just found out that if I just read the dictionary and scan for different words, I do not remember much. I remember the words for a few minutes but not for a longer time. It seems they are just stored on my short term memory and not on the long term. I used to read first some reading materials and when I encountered words which are new to me, that is the time I consult the dictionary.

Yah, i also read books, magazines, newspapers and everything that i can read sometimes including candy wrappers etc. and when there is a word that i don't understand much, i look it up on a dictionary! but when i got an ipod touch, i discovered that some games and applications can be helpful in expanding vocabulary...I downloaded the application Scramble wherein you can search words within several letters and there is always a trivial word at the beginning along with its meaning! well thats how i expand mine...

Instead of doing things which won't make me productive, I choose to stay here and learn.

I have not yet raed Les Miserable and the others you mentioned except Madame Bovary. I learned a lot of unfamiliar words on that classic novel. I had also read Red Badge of Courage, Jude the Obscure, Dr. Faustus, Merchant of Venice and a lot more. I enjoyed reading. I expand not only my vocabulary there but I am learning also in other areas.
