dear mylotters, i've got allergies. my skin looks like maps with big swelling on the skin like hundred islands. my face swelling and my ears feels thick and hot. my eyelids closing like i've been stung by bees. my arms and legs are itching. i have taken a tablet of betamethasone dexchlorphenamine and i hope it subsides because i look weird now. i never thought i would get allergies from cubed taro roots. taro warm root crop (Colocasia esculenta) and fruit stew made with coconut milk and sugar (guinatan) that was my snack today. i dont remember eating anything else aside from noodles in the morning. do you think i got it from there? have you experienced having this type of allergies? what do you usually do so that it will not get worse? ann

I have never heard of cubed taro roots. Where do you live that they sell foods like that? I am assuming you dont live in the United States. How would you describe the texture and taste of that food. I am sorry to hear that you had a severe allergic reaction to it. Thats awful. Recently I started taking Cipro for a UTI and every time I go out in the sun for more then 5 minutes without sunblock on I break out in massive hives. I've had to take a lot of benedryl and claritin to get the hives to go down and it sucks I dont like taking any more medicine then I have to but the hives are unbearably itchy. Thank god I just took the last dose of Cipro so hopefully I will be able to go outside again without getting hives soon.

Thanks for the explanation. I've never heard of taro or gabi I am pretty sure as far as I know that is not available here in the United States. Its possible though that in some stores it could be sold in the ethnic section such as wegmans has. I viewed the picture you attached. Hives are sort of bumps that swell up and appear on your skin and itch very badly. Yours sounds like a true allergic reaction rather then hives. My daughter had a reaction to a medicine she was taking and her entire body was covered in splotches similar to what you described as your allergic reaction.

taro roots - taro
dear shaggin, taro is the english word for it. we call it "gabi" in our dialect here in the philippines and it is usually added to viands that we eat with rice. sometimes we cube them, add to fruits and other ingredients and cook with coconut milk and sugar. we have them as snack. i posted a picture for you. hives erupt dont they? it was not like that for me. mine was all pinkish and looking like maps. anyways, hope you get an idea of what i am talking of. maybe its not found in your place. i guess sometimes, it is made into starch. i am not sure though. have a nice day. ann

Almost like mine. I have allergies on seafoods like shrimps and crabs. I never really eat this food because even the smell can meke me feel itchy. But one time I tried to taste a shrimp for a dinner. One piece only, I really didn't like the taste. But then when I tried to sleep at night, my body started to itch, I thought there's an ant on my bed. I really did not mind the itch since I was sleepy. Morning came and I went to work, and the itch is still there. In my workplace the itch becomes worst. My skin swell, although not in my face but it affected most part of my body. Yah like i have been stung by the bee. It quickly spread on my body. Somebody let me take an anti-allergy medicine called zyrtec and slowly the allergy subsides. From that time on I never ate nor tasted crustacean foods.

hello kenites, those are my favorites. i never had any allergies eating them. i remember one time on a vacation somewhere in luzon, a relative had a shrimp pond and he harvested and the fresh shrimps were steamed and served hot in front of me. it was a feast!!! but never had any reaction then. there were crabs too ... uhhhh yummy!! so i guess it is not always an allergy breaks out... it just accidentally happened to me now. and from taro, of all things. i find it funny! have a nice day, ann

Hi ann, my only advice would be to seek medical attention. Ihave had minor irritations, but nothing as bad as what you describe, and if it didn't clear quickly, I would go to the doctor. Good luck, and take care, mike.

Hi ann, well that's good news. Maybe, it wasn't something you ate, but a reaction to something you touched, or came in contact with. Good news that it has passed. Mike.

dear mike, after i have taken the medication it subsided very quickly so i didnt think of going anymore to the doctor. morning after that, my skin has cleared, and my eyes have lowered its swelling (like i just cried a little, no longer like i was hit with an upper cut in the eye ). i was able to go to office and the day went well. but at night after eating chinese food, it came back so i had to take the medicine again. now am fine and doing well. thank you, ann

I think the medication will work well as it has a dual action. Betamethasone is a corticosteroid and dexchlorpheniramine is an antihistamine. Both have their own mechanisms of action against allergies. But still, it all depends on your body on whether it wants to respond to the medication or not! Anyway, I do sincerely hope your swelling and itching will subside soon; do let us know how you are going. In the meantime, might be worth avoiding those snacks again in the future since you now know what is most probably causing your allergic reaction.

Good to know that the medicine did work to subside the itch, even though it might only work acutely and transiently. Sometimes it is a burden to have to watch what you eat, but better safe than sorry.....

This week has been very bad for my allergies. It started off earlier in the week when I had an outbreak on contact dermititis on my right arm. It didn't itch or anything, thank goodness, but it still looked awful. Then last night I was at a friend's house and my sinus allergies started acting up really bad. Come to find out, there is mold in their house and that is one thing that I am highly allergic to. Hope you are feeling better now.

Allergies- that's something I would not want to have now or even in the future. I don't have any allergies to any foods and even medicines. However, I know people who don't have allergies when they were young but developed one when they got older. My Autnie and brother were good examples. My Auntie just discovered about 6 years ago that she is allergic to poultry products. She was already 54 years old during that time. She has been eating poutry products ever since she was young but did not have any allergies until she reached the age of 54. It's the same for my younger brother. He developed his allergies to Milkfish about 2 years ago. I know how horrible a person looks like when they have allergies. Their face get deformed. One of my cousins is allergic to canned foods, chocolates, junk foods, soft drinks and any types of foods that have artificial flavoring. Her allery is very serious to the point that she could die if it reaches her heart.

Hi, tigeraunt. I am sorry that you are experiencing this irritation. It is best to seek the advice of a doctor. An dermatologist would be best. They can see what is causing your allergy. And they should have an cure for it too. My son broke out on his chest, last week. And I have been applying a rash ointment to it. I really am mad at myself for not taking him to his doctor. I usually do so when he gets really sick or when something strange happens to his body. This goes for any of my other kids too. I don't know what is on his chest. It could not have been the measles or the mumps. It looked like a rash that was here and there on his chest. They were in spots. It is best to go to the doctor so that you can get treated. I hope that you will get some medicine to make you feel so much better. I don't like itching all over my skin either. I have broken out when I wore a dress that I did not wash. It was handed down to me by this woman that is a relative in my family. Someone gave her some clothes. It broke my chest and my arms out. I had brown spots all over my skin... Now, I don't see any of those marks at all. The doctor must have given me something very strong to get rid of this allergy. I am not all that allergic to any others things. I just get itchy from Sulfur. The pill form that is. I will itch like crazy.. I am thinking that this is what has caused my itchiness. I hope that you will feel better as time passes. In the meantime, contact your doctor so that you can receive the best treatment there is. Take care.

Hi, I have experienced this before. It is really itching and unbearable. All I can think is scratch, scratch and scratch WHICH I should NOT. First of all, go and see the doctor. He will either give you the anti-allergies medicine or a jab. Put hot towel or ice to ease a bit. Hope you are feeling better now! Take care.

Do you want to get rid of your allergy for good? You may inquire with your doctor about Allergy Prophylaxis Treatments where you have to avoid the intake of allergens (total abstain from the food that you think is causing your allergic reaction) plus straight taking of medications, usually for 3 years. After that, you'll say goodbye to your allergy forever.

dear magtibay, i never had anything like this before and i am never choosy with my food. but with what happened, i had to control my intake of my favorite seafoods. i feel sad. i was fine the next day though, but after eating at a chinese restaurant it was back. so i had to take the same medicine. then i am able to rest well after an hour. thank you for your advise. ann

i never experience such. but there was a point that my entire back was red (full of allergies) hmm, there's a medicine for skin for that one which was given by the doctor and he prevented me from eating any type of food that could react like dairy products/fish(seafood) and others. And like mention, you could consult it with the doctor to be safe..

Hi! Maybe you should really go to the doctor, at least if the swellings don't subside or you feel anything else that is abnormal. A friend of mine had the same symptoms that you had before- itchiness with pink patches of swelling skin. She was taking antihistamine but it wasn't really working. Then she started to complain that she couldn't breathe well and she had to be rushed to the hospital. It turned out that her skin condition was a symptom of high sugar content in her blood. Her blood sugar was high because something else in her body was not working right. To make the story short, the doctor found out a lot more problems in her body that needed attention and her allergy was the least of it. It's better to be safe than sorry. Hope you get well!

Friend..., I had allergies for about 5 years.... What my problem was....whenever for example...if I scrub my hands with something or for fun if someone slaps me.....within minutes, that portion of my skin becomes red, hard, thick and sometimes itching occurs...... It was a great disappointment for me.... The problem was on my face,lips.arms.legs. When I went to doctor, he told me that that may take some years to go.... And he prescribed me a medicine named ATARAX... and he advised not to use it regularly.... Whenever I cannot tolerate that itching, only then I can use that medicine.... I found that when I had one tablet, it could stop the allergy for a week.... Gradually I reduced its consumption.... and now I am free from that allergy....thank god... I hope you would have went to a skin specialist.... I cannot say that its the food you had resulted in allergies.... because there was no cause for my allergy... It just came and now gone......

hell0 there! nope, I have never experienced that type of allergy and I am actually a lucky guy, because I don't have any allergies to anything, the only thing that I am allergic to from time to time is dust- when I am indoor and there is too much dust in the air and I breath it in, I start coughting and I must drink a glass of water really fast, because it gets really bad :(

Thanks for sharing. Welcome always. Cheers. Prof
