How do you view Home Cooking???

Okay, I got to thinking about it the other day, I was chatting with my father who loves to cook, however, I had asked him what was for dinner, he said a really good home cooked meal, well when he told me, it was hamburger helper. Now really do you consider that a "home cooked" meal? I know that many of us have different views on home cooking. But, wouldn't you consider home cooking going to the level of actually making home made biscuits and actually making gravy. Or how about slow cooking a roast all day, with the blend of spices that you created. How do you view, home made.

yes, i consider that a home-cooked meal as long as the burger is home made from scratch.

So are you gonna find the cow and every thing? Wow, that's a lot of work, but that is one way to get fresh ground beef. I'm joking, please forgive me my sense of humor is on the rather, unusual side today. I'm trying to look at the funny side of things. Life has been very stressful today and I'm trying to keep myself from breaking down.

That's what I call semi homemade cooking. You do still have to brown the meat and cook the food so it is actually cooking, I consider it a short cut. But I do still consider it cooking. It is a nice comforting meal too. I will occasionally make Hamburger Helper myself, my family loves the Lasagnia and we also like the tuna tetrazini. So it is not totally homemade it is still nice and comforting.

You just reminded me of this program I have seen on I think the Food network channel. I think it was actually titled "Semi-Homemade." This gal would come up with all sorts of recipes that she would make using many ready made items. Some pretty neat drinks that came out of that kitchen. I think I need one of those for tonight. Ugghh....

My family like hamburger helper but I don't buy those nasty box mixes. I make my own. I found a recipe for hamburger helper in a jar. It can be used for chili mac, Stroganof, Potato Beef Casserole, Quick Lasagna. It's nice when in a hurry. I got the recipe from thriftyfun.com and I don't have to worry about all those strange extra ingredients that I can't begin to pronounce.

my definition of home cooking is the food made at home! so mixing the ingredients and spices together from scratch is home cooking. Sometimes we get to do it faster with some ready prepared stuff we buy in the shops.

That's a good way of looking at it, hey it took time and energy in your kitchen. There you have it. And the aromas that waft through the house and make the kids come a running, you have done your job! Enjoy!

I really don't consider Hamburger Helper to be "home cooking". Sure, there's some prep involved, but it's nothing like doing things from scratch! My fiance loves to cook. He does most everything from scratch, rarely uses boxes and cans. He makes homemade breads quite often, makes homemade chicken and beef stock, and will prepare meals with as little boxed/canned items as possible. I know, most people don't have time for a lot of that kind of stuff, but really, Hamburger Helper is definitely not homemade. Most of that stuff, the stuff they put in those boxes, you can make yourself and it would be better and healthier for you.

While at the super market the other day, I picked up a box and read the ingredients, it was impossible trying to figure out what was actually used in those items. Heck there were so many preservatives in it. You could probably leave a box of that stuff sitting on a shelf for oh a 100 years or more and it would still be all right. My husband loves to spend time in the kitchen as well. There was a time that we used to fight over who was going to prepare dinner. I finally gave up the battle and let him win.
