then they had it in a nice bug catcher. And of course couldn't leave it alone... kept on playing with it and to my amazement it didn't fly away. Well eventually they left the hatch open and the butterfly(or fancy moth) disappeared but shortly later there as a burning smell we figured it escaped and met it's demise. *sigh* So rather than break their hearts we told them someone left the hatch open and the and Lady Spot is missing.

It's nice that your daughters like butterflies. I hope they continue to grow up loving nature.

3snugglebunnies I was never allowed to catch butterflies like that but taught to admire them and leave them to fly as they would. its cruel to catch them and mess around as they are very delicate. I hate it that people collect them a nd pin them down as specimens. we do so much thats wrong to our world of nature and it is all there for us to enjoy but we tear things up just to look at them. Butterflies are best seen in the wild where they fly free and we can all enjoy their beauty. same with wild flowers, we pick them, they wither, we toss away. we all have flowerr beds for picking bouquets so leave wild flowers on the stem to enjoy as is.

You're more permissive than I was. I would never allow my boys to catch living things, they had to observe them in their natural setting and if they scared it off they missed it. They learned to stay very still and silent! Butterflies are so beautiful, I'm so glad I'm back in the Midwest where there are so many varieties of them to enjoy.
