I think it is Disgusting.....

See, I cannot even find the proper words. I made a foreign friend, a Filipino to be precise. We were having a casual chat once and the topic drifted to our schooldays. He recounted that during a class, his teacher was explaining something and he (my friend) stood up and said, " the thing which you are explaining is wrong, I have studied that and it should be like this...." That teacher of his met him during a reunion and admitted that he was wrong on that day but couldn't just admit it in front of the whole class of students. After listening to him my first and spontaneous reaction was, if it were me, I would have got a tight slap across my face and would have been listening to the agonizing "hmmmmm like sound when everything goes blank" for the next couple of minutes. He with a frown was surprised and told me that it is illegal to hit a child by the teachers. I think it is not the Philippines alone where you cannot lay your hands as a freewill on a child. Unfortunately, my country doesn’t restrict the teachers to do so. During my school days there was this Physical training (P.T.) teacher who was regarded as a monster by the students of my school. (Ironically, my school was said to be the Best school in town. Parents could do anything for their child getting admitted in our school). But things were worse when I was in Junior college. It was a new batch and all the students were sitting for an orientation programme, there were about 170 students in the hall. Somebody from the back whistled. The lecturer went so mad that at random he caught a guy whom he “thought” might have whistled and kept on hitting him till the student fell on the floor. That was the first day we got to meet our real teachers where we would be spending the coming two years.. The beatings continued, and later on some students became the hot favorites for the teachers. Strangely, I observed along with my friends, those who were extremely weak were never hit nor those guys who were very tall and sturdy looking as they (the teachers) would fear that they might retaliate. Some of my classmates got the beatings of a lifetime. Some students took transfer after the first year or even within first year. The rest like me were counting the 2 years to get over. I happened to see one of my ex- teachers after a long time in a CA’s office. He didn’t seem to recognize me, but looking at him made me like to spit on him. But I couldn’t, I am supposed to be freakin civilized. I wouldn’t ask for a pardon for my language. You haven’t done your home work you would be hit, cannot solve a mathematical problem get a slap, cannot perform the physics experiment on those weird looking apparatus which you have seen for the first time in your life well, get a tight lash on your back which should turn so sore within an hour that you cannot withstand the pain. Those were the most amazingly, dreadful years of my student life. I don’t know why, I don’t know how, I got to write this thing down today. But it takes courage to even pen down your thoughts especially horrid memories like those. Recently, I even read in the news paper that the girl students of a Government school were stripped down (aged 6-7 years) for not doing their home-work. Then these stark naked children would be paraded in the school ground. Things couldn’t turn better than that! What do you think should be suitable enough to PUNISH them? A child is supposed to learn from the teachers about knowledge, moral, wisdom. Learning from “Them” makes us learn everything except what we really should. What about your country? Do you have any similar stories to share?

dear bodhi, during my days in school we still had teachers who are feared by students. it is either they embarrass the child in front of the class or he hits them with chalk or eraser if not paying attention. but that is long gone. it is true that physical punishments on children/students are no longer allowed. a teacher can go to jail for that. children should be in a more pleasant place to study not be forced due to fear of teachers. if children dont do their assigned task, teachers can punish them with other things but never physical. ann

Thats the point Ann! Why to physically hit someone, and that too as if the child is some sort of criminal or worse. It is beyond pardon.

hi that is appalling how on earth can students learn anything but fear and hatred and loathing being treated like dirt and beat on. Those are not teachers, they are monsters. I am proud of you for being to tell this as it must have been so hard to do, painful to remember. Here in the United States its illegal for a teacher to strike a student at all. They would be arrested and jailed too. I have read of an occasional mistreatment of a child in school but the teacher was suspened and sent to prison. I think its just terrible that teachers in your country can do these things and not be punished for them. I do hope things will change in your school system for the better as students cannot learn when they are in constant fear of being beaten.

Many would resent going to school. It IS horrible indeed, even to recount those memories. Thank you so much for your encouragement my fear friend. Its worth forgetting those things of the past when you are surrounded by so many kind hearted people

my daughter have cp, so she suppose to had a note for the whole year, so i wrote her a note for not doing gym, the teacher claim she wrote it, she came home crying because how he talked to her for no reason. this fool made the mistake and told me what's goes on in his class isnt none of my business, and i told him when my kid comes home crying then it is. and then told him i will be more then happy to come to school and talk to him. well the princpal got into it, he knew i wasnt the one to piss off. the teacher called back and said sorry. our county schools knew who i was and i didnt play. yeah if anyone put a hand on my kids, it wouldnt be pretty.

Like i said, I wish there were more parents like you. thank you so much for your views, it is indeed the responsibility of the parents to see to it that nobody harms them physically or emotionally. Thanks again!
