What next, Jaws?

Last week we had a scare. Dearra had grabbed her shoes, which she keeps inside the garage, and was putting them on when something moved. She screamed and said "mom, I think there's a centipede inside my shoe." So I opened the window, grabbed the shoe and dumped it upside down out the window. Nothing. So I looked inside. Nothing. So I said, "there's nothing in there." And that is when it decided to crawl out and have a look at me. I screamed and tossed the shoe out the window. As soon as it hit the ground, the centipede (it was a 2 - 3 inch long centipede) beat a hasty retreat under the car. Dearra doesn't keep her shoes there any more. :D So today I was upstairs getting dressed and Naomi comes up and says, "mom, the crayfish is in my shoe and Cary's getting the net to put it back into the tank." What the heck? So I go downstairs and here comes Cary with the net. The crayfish is in the corner where Naomi's shoes were and I say to Cary, "you know how to pick it up without getting pinched, so why don't you do that?" "NO! I'm using the net." "Here, I'll do it." So I get the crayfish in the net and dump it back in the tank. Durn thing used the tank partition, the one we use to keep it away from the goldfish, to climb up. Whoever it was here who told me that crayfish escape was right on! Cary is now telling me that it is time to release the crayfish into the creek. What will we find in somebody's shoes next time, a shark?

haha...that little crayfish dude actually made it all the way out. they do tend to do that sometimes...they like to crawl about. i do recall someone pointing it out in your 'partitions' discussion. anyway, stay away from the toilets.. alligators might jump out when you least expect it

I don't know how a centipede would taste, but i won't try it. May we open the sushi bar now?

I think she was trying to get to the goldfish and went the wrong way. The goldfish is still alive and well.

Hi Dawn. When we had the cane farm, hubby always left his work shoes on the back patio. He would always "bump" them before putting them on because there was very often a frog or a cane toad in them. He would just bump them out and put the shoe on. I think I would want them sterilised first!

I believe they can emit a liquid which has an effect, but I've never heard of anyone dying or being seriously affected by cane toads. The young people in our youth group had a toad race every year. They "dressed" their toads and race them. There were prizes for best dressed, biggest, ugliest etc. All the toads were put under a box in the centre of a large circle. When the box was lifted, the first one to cross the circle was the winner.

Yuck, cane toads are poisonous, aren't they?

I don't think they're so much harmful to people as to animals that eat them. Races, why not? We have our Calaveras county jumping frog contest not too far south of here!

Hi dawn, Wasn´t that crayfish the one Cary got at school? Maybe it´s time to hand it back where it belongs. You have quite a lot to worry without looking at the creek for a shark or at your doorstep for a tiger. I never thought it was a good idea to leave shoes anywhere, not even at Christmas. They look like houses to too many critters.

The girls are even worse at leaving their socks lying around. One of these days I am either going to make a mobile with them, or make them buy them back from me. But yea, it's the crayfish he got from school. I think it would be happy in the creek, don't you?

The worst thing about socks is that they tend to appear as one instead of a pair. At least, that was my experience when the girlsd were growing. I alwayd wondered if they were hungry and ate one sock as a snack Yup, crayfish and creek go together!

No sharks but watch out for those snakes. We had a neighbor that went out to the shed to get a shovel and reached down to pick up a "weed" off the floor. Wasn't a weed, it was a copper head about 8 inches long. He got bit on the hand and had to go to the hospital for anti veneom shots. So if it moves check it twice the kids aren't seeing things - they promise. LOL

We don't have copperheads, but we do have rattlers. We just killed one in the front yard last week. But the backyard has snake fencing, so hopefully we won't see any more back there.

Think of a chain link fence, but the mesh is much smaller, you fasten it to the bottom of your fence and bury the bottom a couple inches into the ground and snakes can't get through.

here in texas, we call them crawdads. and i just love sitting outside on my porch during an all day or all night storm, those things come up out of the holes and start having fights right up on my porch. LMAO i live in public housing, my porch is concrete. but when it floods so bad that the crawdads come up for a fight... lmao with me living in the city, i haven't caught many insects in strange places. but when i used to live out in the woods, once i had these kittens... they were so cute! anyways, they were old enough to horseplay ... (i called them teens) and they found a frog to torment and play with, under the steps. well, i tried to move the kittens, and the poor frog out from under the steps, just in case the board of the last 2 steps gave way, they wouldn't get hurt. i grabbed an old tire and placed it beside the step. i heard a hiss, but didn't see anything, so i placed the kittens in there, and then i placed the frog some where safe. before i could stand up, i hear hissings from the kittens, the momma cat comes over and yells, and then i finally see it... a copperhead. you know that saying, if it was a snake it might have bitten ya? LMAO well, i was close. the snake was hiding in the tire. strangely enough, i didn't wake it up from it's beauty sleep until i sat the tire down. then when i put the kittens inside, it thought it was safe to go back to sleep, until one of the kittens started playing with it. it's a great thing the snake didn't bite me... the nearest hospital would have been almost 45 minutes away. i never again picked up anymore big black tires. ha ha ha

Well it depends on where the shoes are kept to be worn at the next time.Anywhere near by the great whites they sure would take shelter in those shoes. The word spread fast among animals about the notoriety of your shoes.

oh my goodness. its a good thing you dont live in arizona though. some places, even in the city have lots of scorpion outbreaks. so people often get stung in their homes and such if they dont watch it. when i lived over in glendale in this one mobile park, we had to watch everything for scorpions. i woke up with one on my foot one morning, felt something moving on my toe, opened my eyes and kicked it off before it could sting me. it was kind of funny, cause my late hubby always slept naked. he jumped up and was trying to swat it with a towel and kill it. but watching him jump around the room. made me laugh so hard. have you ever seen a naked man jumping around all over after something? i mean not chasing you... bending over looking under stuff, etc,

I would keep everyone’s shoes in a cupboard if I were you! The escaping crayfish reminded me of the crazy crab that got away...We often look after my daughter’s little friend’s crazy crabs and it is difficult enough to keep our cats away from them until the crabs who are indeed mental manage an escape because someone (who is probably eight years old and cute) left the tank open! The last time the household came to a standstill until the escapee was recaptured I was so worried somebody was going to step on him!

Hi, dawnald. I hope that you never find Jaws in your shoes at all! I don't like any pesky pests around my things at all! I am so scared of things that are slimy and that crawls. I am glad that you saw it and got it out of Dearra's shoes.

Reminds me of a day in high school when the sweepers/cleaners didn't do their job in cleaning the room and the next day our teacher was fuming mad over the clutter, dusty windows and topsy-turvy arrangement of the chairs. A classmate of mine screamed because a gecko managed to enter the classroom through the window and now it was on the wall right next to her. Instead of sympathizing with her, our teacher told us she wouldn't be surprised if the next animal we'd see in the room, due to our irresponsibility was a crocodile!

Welcome to Dawn's Wild Animal Park - hee hee! I actually wish we had some neat critters out here like you do up there! Well, maybe not to find them in our shoes though - hee hee. And why are these critters being found in shoes?? Are they like shell homes - like for hermit crabs? Even my sister says her cats like shoes. Well, if you do find a shark - be sure and count your toes - hee hee!!
