I think that everyone can help himself, but about these books - the book writers usually now their way in their life and they want to share with their knowledge to help others or they just want to earn some money from that they know. But these books are written to those who doesn't believe in their own powers, otherwise they don't need books like this. So I suppose that Self Help Books can help only infrequently, if they contain some specific information which gets into human mind and makes his courage more powerful and visible.

In my opinion Self Help books in general can help a person in the area or subject that he/she wants to make an improvement in. A self help book can act as a guide, or at least gives a person ideas and more information. In many cases a person willing to act according to the outline in a self-help book can really hejp the person. On the other hand there are self-help books which were written with a profit in mind. These books tend to be rather bland, probably because the writers wrote not from personal experience.

Well the idea of Self-Help is that you help yourself. If a book can't motivate you to do that, then it didn't work for you. But if you had to read the book in order to help yourself... doesn't that defeat the purpose to begin with? I don't read self-help. I think I can motivate myself just fine on my own and even if I can't that's what loving friends and family are for.

it will depend on how you understood and took the advice.I don't see anything wrong with following advices written in self-help books.you can take the author's writing with a grain of salt.that's why there are a lot of writers of self-help books.they give advices, but it will depend on different persons as to how they will interpret it.

But some are bland and written with the sole intention of minting money....some are useful though as my friends would say...

If someone decides to read a self help book, this person is already open for change and influence. That's why I think they are useful+helpful :o)

I don't like to refer to them as personal development rather then self help, and they can be immensely helpful, if you apply what you learn. I have noticed a few people above, say that they can help themselves, and these personal development books do just that, if you didn't think you needed to improve you would seek the advice of those who have gone before you. As for the bland reads, that are monotone, I would think that they wouldn't sell much, not that I would ever buy one at it's brand new cover price, I prefer tried tested and true, and Libraries are great for that, and if you really want to keep the book around, used book stores of tonnes of excellent books for super cheap. Sincerely and With Appreciation.
