Mylotters I have got some questions and need some advice from on you all. My husband found out last week that he has emphysema. It was a big shock to us both. He is only 53yrs old and otherwise in good health. When I called and got his test results I just about fell to the floor. I really want to tell him but I knew that he needed to know. He has an appointment this Tuesday with the family dr who is sending him to a specialist. I guess we will know more about it then. Does anyone know anything about this emphysema? Any help would be grateful. We both are just lost on knowing what to except for his future.

Oh gabs thanks so much for your kind words. I am beside totally and Im trying to be strong for him. Yes it has scared him. He doesn't know what he can or cannot do just yet. It started because he started having problems breathing upon walking. I managed to get him to the dr which was a task to get him to go. They are trying to get him into a specialist now. He works running equipment for several different types of companies. His works within the union hall. Right now he in an area that he deals with a lot of coal dust and I have noticed that it is harder on his breathing. I just wonder if he worked with a construction company if that would be better for him. What do you think? Thanks again for sharing. Have a great day and I wish you well..

rosepedal oh yes He needs to get away from breathing coal dust as that might have a lot to do with his emphysema , I know its very irritating to the lungs and has caused a sort of false tuberculosis. So get away from the coal dust for sure.

Hi Sweetie Yes he will have to come away from the Dust there is no doubt about that, no Chemicals either He will find it harder to breathe because the Coal is getting on his Lungs his Body will tell him when it has had enough, Another thing is Sprays like Perfume deodorant Air Freshener any Aerosol Sprays try not to spray near him as it will set it of to It will get a lot of getting used to the changes and adjustments, it will be frustrating very often but it gets easier to deal with and I guess to adjust Be strong Sweetie it is one of those things but at least you know now what is wrong and he will get treatment for it Hugs

it's sad to hear that your husband is having this disease involving the lungs. would you mind if i ask if your husband smokes? Emphysema is an irreversible disease condition. it involves destruction of the alveolar walls of the lungs causing enlargement of the bronchioles causing poor gas exchange.

Is it Chantix? If so, please please look that up. Some of the side effects can change a person's personality. I'm not saying don't take it, just be aware in case your husband starts showing any symptoms...

Chantix - Chantix for smoking
Hi AmbiePam Yes it is Chantix. I have read some things about it causing depression. The doctor even stated that as well. I will watch him closely when it gets started on it. I hoping that will be real soon.

Yes he does smoke for the time being. We have already got the doctor to get him on some meds to help him to stop. Well that is they are trying to get an approval from our insurance company so that we don't have to pay that much for it. It cost like $150 for a month supply. I should know something in the next couple of days. Thanks for asking and for the information you have given me. We need all the input we can get right now. He is getting an appointment with a specialist. I just hope they call real soon with that appointment.

I would suggest that you get him involved with a site for people with this same health condition so he has people to talk to about what he is going through and they will be able to offer him advice since they have been through it already. My dad had this and his lungs were hardly working at all. It is a disease of the lungs. They specialist will do testing to find out just what functions he has of his lungs. They will let yo know how bad it is or if it's just starting and he will get lots of advice from them on his chances of life style that he may have to make. He may not need it now but at some time he will need to be on oxygen to help his lungs breathe. I wish you and him lots of luck and I sincerely hope he does not have a bad case of this.

I do wish you both lots of luck with this as you both will have trying days ahead. He may be able to do things but only in moderation. His job is not helping the matter and may be his whole problem. He needs to wear a mask at work now to keep things from getting into his lungs and making them worse.

Hi Deerek my ex husband told you most of my story but would like to say ask the doc about a local hospital that does excercises for COPD they are gentle ones but do build muscles and strong muscles mean they dont need as much oxygen so there is more left for the lungs I am 65 and had this for at least 12 years I am not on oxygen at all i have an inhalor that I use once in the morning and sgain in the evening it has a tiny amount of steroid in it and it realy helps. Try and stay positive, keep away from people who you know have a cold or a chest infection In the supermarket or anywhere else outside the home use antibacterial gel on your hands as you will be amazed what germs are on a supermarket trolley, Above all gentle ezcersise will help a lot my local council run gym does one especially for COPD Lastly think positive it just mean he wont be able to do some things he used to do but its not the end of the world although it may seem that way now I still do my walking although slower and I still do housework (which I hate lol) The thing i camt do is walk up a steap hill but on the flat roads I can manage Hope this helps Hugs to you and hubby Babs

Thanks ladies for your support. The main thing with him is being able to do his yard work. We live up on a hill and there is lots of weed eating to do, and he can't do it at all now. He works as an equipment operator outside style and he is afraid that he might not be able to do that. We are renting and I think that we need to find a place that is going to be a little easier to take care. You know the kind that I can help with. LOL Once again thanks alot.

All I know is from what I've seen happen to other people. My best friend in junior high, her grandfather had emphysema. He ended up having to get a lung transplant. He was a smoker. But after he got the lung transplant he did live a better life (I imagine this man was worse off than your husband. I don't want you to worry your husband will need a lung transplant). Of course her grandfather was quite old when he was diagnosed. I am very sorry that your hubby has been diagnosed with this. I pray he gets very good care. And remember, new health treatments are coming out all the time.

I keep thinking about all the new meds and treatment that they have come out with. I feel as long as he does what is asked of him that we can live a long life. Thanks for sharing your story with me. I will keep everyone updated as we progress with treatment.

Hello Rose, I'm Melissa and I'm a nurse and I work with patients with COPD and emphysema daily. Here are a few things you should know...there is no cure,,, but the disease can be slowed by eliminating smoke, smog, and other irritants from your surroundings. Build a resistance to respiratory infections by eating foods high in vitamins and fiber, ask your doctor about the flu and pneumonia vaccine as well. Schedule rest periods often, and avoid any unnecessary strenuous activity, although mild excercise is recommended. Persons with emphysema burn a lot of calories just to breathe, so make sure to have a good diet with 'good' foods and no junk foods, as nutritional foods help improve lung function, and less nutritional foods can cause breathing muscles to become weak. Limit salt intake also. Hope this helps, if there is anything else you would like to know, feel free to ask =)

Hello Melissa I have to say that I have never been informed about this Melissa and I have had this Illness 6 years now At the moment I am in a bad way and have been for 3 weeks even though I have had all the vaccinations I still managed to get a light case of pneumonia the Nurse I have now is such a waste of time and I am not happy as the previous Nurses worked so hard to keep me on the level This one will not listen to me she rushes through things and that is it I will be complaining about her because if she had listened to me I would not be in the way I am now But thank you so much for this Information about the Food and that

Thanks Melissa. I too hadn't heard about the foods before either. I will work on that for him. One good thing is that he is not a salt eater at all. He never salts food once it is on his plate. The junk food is another story. He is trying to get that Chantix for his smoking. Our insurance won't pay for it, so the doctor is trying it get a PA on it. Keep your fingers crossed that it will work. We also are waiting on the appointment to the specialist. Soon I hope. Gabs Im sorry that you are sick right now. I hope that you get better real soon. I will thinking of you.

My ex. wife, with whom I am still friendly, has had emphysema for several years. Since her mid-50s I would say. It seems that it is an inherited disease as her mother also had it. With medical attention and monitoring she is doing OK. However, one thing that bothered her at one time is that she was a really excellent singer and we worked together professionally for many years (I am a musician). She misses that ability because she needs good breath control to sing, and now can no longer do it. She does however, train young people in singing and stage presentation. She has the right attitude for such a difficult disease and is proving to a lot of people that she can still have a life, even though it doesn't involve singing that she loved so much in the past. It did take her a while to come to terms with it though, but we are a lot stronger than we think we are. Myself, I have come to terms with having had a heart attack at 58, even though I kept myself fairly fit. It was just genetic blood clotting, and it has changed my life quite a lot inasmuch as I don't have the energy I used to, but I'm working on it! You just gotta keep working on it... That's my philosophy and everytime I feel that life has slapped me down because my energy and strength has gone. I just pick myself up and go for it again. What else am I do to do? I ask myself. Nothing is forever, and that inludes my stamina. I hope that your husband gets a positive prognosis, and that things work out well for you both. _Derek

Thanks Derek I appreciate your concern. I also want to thank you for sharing your story with me. I know that it is not a good thing to admit and show signs of getting older.LOL..Im in the same boat with myself. I can;t do things that I could 10 years ago and that is upsetting to me at times. Like you said we can't change our things are just live with it and go on the best that we can.

It is a lung disease where air passage gets smaller and it tightens due to swelling. The tissue becomes weak and it deteriorates. The moment you inhale air the lungs expand and because of the weak tissue the lungs cannot hold its expansion and tends not to serve its purpose. Chain smoking is one reason you'll get this ailments. Perhaps advise him not to expose himself to places where it will trigger irritation on his breathing like smoking areas, constructions sites, polluted streets or even places with lots dust mite. I pray that he will recover soon. It can be cured. I asked my sister about it. She's a doctor.
