Hey friends I am a little overweight and decided to take up diets and exercises. Recently i saw in newspaper article that even sleeping can burn calories. I couldn't believe it. It said that sleeping while watching tv, reading books, listening to music etc can burn up high amount of calories also. I tried it with sleeping almost like 9 hours a day and i saw that i have reduced 2 kgs in 2 weeks! That was really a lot of weight lost by me. I even do exercises but i sleep as much as i can. What about you? Do you also sleep much?

We've been working hard all the day round, so it only makes sense to add a little more effort into effectively losing weight buy burning calories at night and during the day. There are also other ways to increase weight loss while sleeping. To burn more calories while sleeping, i take up weight lifting during the day. By starting a weight lifting program and increasing muscle mass, i will be sure to burn more calories while i sleep. Second things will do is, turning down the heater. Our bodies use more energy to keep warm. By turning down heater at night, i will be turning up my body's metabolic rate, which will burn more calories to keep me warm.

I just can't imagine how is that so, that sleeping burns calories too. And my reaction at first was it is impossible. How can we burn calories when we are sleeping and not doing anything? While working out, we have to do it the hard way to reduce weight, how much more while sleeping. I would like to sleep more each night because I would like to add weight and now the paper is saying otherwise. Well, since it was published in a paper as you have said, I would say that research was done and have a positive result. This is good news for those overweight people who doesn't have enough time to do some stretching and exercises during the day. Funny, ha?

Your Body is like a machine..and while the machine is on,you're burning calories, regardless of how much or little work you're doing..(btw..Tell me..how DO you sleep while reading, watching TV,or listening to music? You're either awake and doing these things,or You're asleep!) You put on weight when you're taking in more food than your body can use..and then it gets stored as fat.If you're doing more work and using more energy, you're burning it faster so Your body doesn't get to store it,so you lose weight.Eating less will help with this too...The 24/7 lifestyle some people try and keep up with has us eating around the clock..So,if you're getting 9 hours of rest or sleep a night,it's a few more hours than most people get,and as you're not awake, overcaffeinated, and snacking, you're contributing to a healthier lifestyle and weight loss..good Job!

it is impossible! When your body is relaxing how can it burn calories? What science did the article give for the sleep therapy?

Ya sleeping too burn calories because breathing, heart beats, digestion etc need energy. Also sleep is the time when our body in involved in the restorative process. When we work, our body gets worn out and these worn out parts is repaired during our sleep. So this repair process also consumes energy.

It depends on the quality of sleep. I worked in the call center industry for quite some time and I did notice that when I was working, I would add a lot of weight because my sleeping pattern was erratic. I guess it has something to do with our body being able to get its much needed rest and when we don't get to sleep well, it becomes stressed and thus the weight gain.

I've never heard of that one. It's good news though because I'm trying to lose some weight recently and since it's the summer and I don't have school, I'm sleeping a lot. Sometimes I feel like my stomach had become smaller when I wake up. Maybe sleeping helps digestion or something. There is only so much hours a person can sleep but I'll definitely take advantage of that.

oh really?? maybe because you loose or reduced your weights since you exercise and you diet also. i dont think it will burn calories. i myself enrolled to the gym, worked out every morning after work and no rice sometimes in a meal. yes i do slept like 7 to 7 hours a day. and yes i do lose weight now.

yup and the body needs 600 calories already just to sleep. that's why, remember the time of the 800 calorie diets? that one didn't stick, right? even oprah got dizzy and lost consciousness with this one.

I also read somewhere that if you lack sleep the tendency is to eat more to compensate so you gain weight. That's why it's important for adults to have at least 6 hours of sleep daily

Yup that's for sure... i sleep 8 hours

Actually sleep reduces stress and tension and keeps you relaxed, even that when you are in deep sleep. stress and tension increases your weight. so once you are stress free you naturally do not gain weight. and you may forget to eat those extra munchies when u r asleep.....good therapy

I sleep a lot and sleep well. If what you said is true, I should be getting fitter. Well, the middle kingdom still exist. So, this is a revelation indeed.
• India

yup means you will be fitter and more healthier if you fall asleep more...Why can't the teachers in class understand this?

Actually I didnt know that but I doubt it'll do any good. I still prefer the old fashioned way - running and fitness. In my oppinion good exercise can do great things for someone looking to lose weight, even without a proper diet.

Yes i know that. I just added saying that sleep can help you out to. That's all.

I do believe that sleeping may burn calories because there are metabolic processes that work even as we sleep.. if the metabolism is catabolic in nature it will effectively burn calories and fat too.. at my stand point.. the sleep period defaults the time that could have been spent for eating meals, snacks, and drinking which are the real culprits of weight gain.. I'll do more research on this to satisfy my curiosity..

yes whatever we do we burn calories. we also burn calories when we smile. But it does not mean that we dont have to exercise to burn calories. eat and sleep and burn calories.
• India

Smiling also uses around 40 muscles..is it true?

Yes, i know that. On 8 hours of sleep, you burn around 500-700 calories, more or less depending your weight. As example, an 180 pounds guy like me burns 600 calories every night.

Hm, I don't think that sleeping will help you a lot, if you eat like a pig and then you go to sleep I don't think that will help you with visible result. If you want to be stronger and not so overweight you have to train. In the fitness, gym and mostly diets help to be in good shape. I sport a lot and I don't think that sleeping will help me lose some weight. I jog every night. I make 10 laps by 400 meters and I gotta say I am in good shape. I don't owe this to the sleeping. I owe this to the gym and to the jogging.
