Getting you coming and going

Toll bridges annoy me. Aren't our tax dollars paying for them? So why charge people to use them and create traffic jams to boot? It is possible to get in and out of San Francisco without paying a toll. First of all, you can get there from the south, by land, and not have to deal with bridges. Of course, if you're coming from the north or east, that would add a lot of time to your trip, and you probably won't be able to avoid a toll coming into town. Leaving town, there is no toll at the bridges on the bay. No, they sneakily get you later at the Carquinez or one of the other bridges. I can take the Golden Gate bridge out of town and then avoid a toll. Or I can take the San Mateo or Dumbarton bridge and go home over Stockton. But who wants to drive that long? Bah humbug. lol So I pay the silly toll. But how rude, the darn thing just went up from $4 to $5. But it's the traffic that's really annoying. It really slows things down. Not fun at all.... Maybe I should just get a Fastrack pass...

i pay almost 5 dollars of my hard-earned money everyday to sit in a traffic jam immediately after the toll booth for about 45 minutes before i get onto another tolled highway where the jam takes another 30 minutes.. i should have made highway concessions instead of doing whatever i'm doing now...i'd be a gajilionnaire in no time at all..

Those things annoy the hell out of me too....when I lived in fort myers florida there was a toll to get to sanibel island...everyone hated it but it was more a way to keep the riff raff out than a way to pay for the road so if you wanted to visit exclusive sanibel (and everyone does) you paid the toll....but since then we have lived a lot of places and i remeber going from raleigh to new york a few years back and this one highway had at least 10 toll boths on it...now come on that is just rediculous and greedy....then we just moved to puerto rico a couple weeks ago and getting out of san juan there were 5 toll booths....what is up with that?? Ok so maybe a toll road is needed to pay for the highway but once the thing is paid for they are supposed to do away with the toll booth and what is up with having 5 to 10 tolls on the same highway...that is just wrong!!!

Hm, why not just have tolls at the exit. Yeah I know, so they can collect for as much of the road that you use. But still....

yeah but then you'd think at least the tolls would be similar....one toll was .75 the next $3 and then $5 and then $1 and back to .75 go figure...i wish we could have just used the part of the road that was .75 but that road is the only way to get to aguadilla.

I guess it makes sense that you tax the people who actually use the road or the bridge, but it sure does slow things down...

that's ok.our island is working on putting a toll on every exit. so now if you want to leave,it'll be 8 dollars per if you don't have a boat. they should not charge residents coming back in.they should be thankful we are returning.

Apropos of nothing really but I have a 35 year old son who would really like to get married and settle down. He is very kind and adores children. So, is he too young for you? I would be a very good MIL

The question is not whether he is too young for me, but whether I am too old for him.

Thankfully we don't have any tolls around here. I couldn't imagine the damage that a toll booth would do to our already hideous traffic. Besides that, we are already taxed to our ears and a toll is really nothing different than an additional way to tax people. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with these and perhaps in the future they will all go away (though I wouldn't hold my breath on that one).

Ha, fat chance! Fortunately, we only have to deal with them on trips to the bay area, and that's only a few times a year.

there is a large city near where i am that is planning to charge not only a road tax but a gas tax as well in hopes that people will take public transport. crazy in my opinion!

If they're going to do that here, they had better provide some public transport!!!

I think tolls ae some of the most fair of taxes. Them that uses it pays for it. It beats taxing the whole state for something many never use.

That is a very good idea! A fastrack pass displayed in form of some color sticker band with dates for the period - pay for 5 years at one go, with concessional rate, may be instead of 4 you might be paying at 2.5 as it decreases the work of the person collecting the toll. :) That is brilliant. In fact, there could be a camera that records the vehicles at the toll points, and sends a monthly bill instead of slowing down the traffic and wasting gas and increasing pollution in the slow traffic. People who needed to go urgently would be less tense and less burden on your medicaid. I always knew you were brilliant.

I don't know that you get a discount for having a fastrack pass, you just get through faster....

I was in San Francisco a few years ago. And I did notice a few tolls that I had to pay when we were driving around. I mostly remember fumbling through bills while impatient drivers were honking horns behind me. I'm sure that if I go back, I'll have the same experience.

hey, if they don't have a fasttrack pass, too darn bad for them!
