..hi fellows.. based from your experience, what would you prefer, to work in an area where the salary is high but you're not happy with the working environment, or to work in an area with not so high salary but you feel fulfillment and happiness? what matters most, the salary or the feeling of fulfillment?

Have you heard of Abraham Maslow? Or the Maslow's Hierarchy of needs? Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist who devised a hierarchy of needs, which represents that humans have to satisfy their basic needs up to esteem needs before reaching self-actualization. According to the chart, the most basic need is physiological needs and safety needs(www.abraham-maslow.com, 2010), like food, clothes, shelter, etc. and security. Relating it to jobs, if you haven't satisfied your most basic needs, you'll first be looking for a high paying job even if you're not happy with it. When you realize you're not happy with your job, then you have successfully got past the first two needs. This is when you will be looking for a job where you can be happy with the environment. This is where your social needs come in. So whoever you are, if you're not secured with your basic needs, you'll surely be looking for a high paying job. You will only consider your happiness if you're satisfied with your basic needs. And to answer your question, I prefer working where the salary is high since I still can't satisfy my basic needs. =) Lengthy FYI don't you think? lol. I'm sorry. I just can't help myself. I love explaining. =)

Since the economy is in a recession nowadays, the necessity to find work with great pay is becoming more important. However, Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple once said these words: "You've got to find what you love, and that is true for work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking and don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it, and like any other great relationship it just gets better and better as the years roll on." I might stay for the salary for a certain period of time until it is necessary but I don't think I would be staying with that work for long since time would really come that one would seek the fulfillment of doing a great work. If money is not a problem, then I'd surely choose the more fulfilling work.

..yeah.. that's why its really hard to choose when you are in the midst of financial crisis.. for me, I really wanted to get out of here and find another job, however, the company has higher salary rate than the others.. so I choose not to get out yet until I can have financial stability.. I don't feel comfortable with my working environment.. I'm not happy.. but I think I have no other choice since I need money for now.. thanks for the nice idea..

I would like to work in an area with a high salary so I can afford the things I want and be able to live the lifestyle I want. Hower I do perfer job satifaction and a job that is not to compcated or stressful. I would have to say I do value happness over salary.

I'd rather choose to work in a company where the working environment is good. Even the compensation is not that high as long as you are enjoying and growing as a person each day, it is already very much. Even if your compensation is big but if all the people surround are fault finders and have crab mentality, I will just be frustrated and pressured all the time. Life will certainly be miserable.

For me it's the fulfillment that counts more. If you don't like what you do then you may not perform at your best.

I won't exchange working in a good and happy environment than in the opposite and being forced to do what you don't want to do even the salary is sky high. People surrounding us in the workplace counts if they are easy to work with.

We'd all like a happy place to work that pays us well. However, with the options you have given I would prefer the lesser pay but a better work environment & coworkers. I certainly don't want to be miserable while at work... that wouldn't make you feel any sort of satisfaction.

This is a tough question. I would most likely go with the more money job. Once the kids are off on their own and my expenses are under control, I can then look into doing what I want to do. Even if this means a cut in pay.

Hello rayne, I'd rather have low salary and enjoy the working environment than the other way around. i don't think i can survive being on a hostile environment. that's because it would give me reason to be like them and treat others the way rude people treated me. and that's not healthy, i wouldn't want to turn into a monster during work.

Hello i taught in colleges for over 40 years, it was the most decent job with a high salary, happyness is always there with the students, staff, parents for a good teacher.. Thanks for sharing. Welcome always. Cheers. Professor

Even though I am always short of cash, I still prefer to work in a good environment than working with half heart. Offers for double salary and carrier chance often come, but I would check first the condition of the company before I accept. I would ask around if any of my friends know the company insights and how is the company going. It is important for me to work where people are free to offer ideas and that the boss values more people who are goal oriented than 9am - 5pm sticklers.

I had the chance to work on a job that paid well but was very stressfull. I only stayed for a year. The salary was not enough for the stress that I was getting. So I guess my answer for your question would be obvious.
