Do You Think It Is Important To Have Something To Look Forward To?

Without doubt! My Mum doesn't have much to look forward to BUT she has a 6 week holiday from work ahead of her (she works on school dinners) and for part of it she will be here with me next weekend, including a trip out to Edinburgh on the train, then John will take us all back to her house where I shall stay for a week and - hopefully, get in at the dentists, as I'm still with my Blackpool dentist. I am looking forward to Edinburgh for a number of reasons. Well, last year we did the same thing BUT didn't take advantage of the Tour Bus that goes round where you can hop on and hop off wherever you like. Instead we just walked up and down part of Princes Street, visiting a couple of large shops, then spent some more time in the park opposite. That was it! We were so terrified of getting lost that we didn't explore the place properly. So this time I've made sure that we're catching an earlier train AND a later one coming back..so we have no excuses. We simply MUST explore! So, how about you? Do you think that we should all have something to look forward to, no matter what that experience may be? Do you feel that we should have to spend money in order to enjoy ourselves or is a walk around your local park sufficient? I, for one, am conscious at how much everything costs due to not working BUT it does not stop me from getting out and about enjoying myself..albeit not as often these days.

I do agree, that having something to look forward to. I don't do too much because I can't take off because I don't get a paid vacation, but I do kind of make mental plans for the weekends.

Yes, I know what you mean. Even going out in the car a short distance to a couple of shops is different than during the week, because, of course, John is at work. It took us out of the house and it's amazing how positively it affects our mood. Just didn't have the weather to go with it!

You sound like my hubby. He likes Winter too. In fact, it has to be at least 25 degrees C before he even takes his coat off..and he has about 3 layers on underneath that.

Without a doubt. lol Edinburgh, no fair. If you get to York, be sure and let me know, I never made it there. :-( Yeah, we find things to do that are reasonably priced. This time of year, we can drive about 1/2 an hour, pay a $7 parking fee, bring a picnic lunch, and spend the afternoon swimming in the American river. Or many other things like that.

On our honeymoon we got to a lot of places, but in the end it was a choice between Salisbury and York. He had never been to either place, and really wanted to go see Stonehenge, I had been to Salisbury but not York. Oh well, one of these years.

Salisbury is awesome too! When I visited with Mum it was the hottest week in the year, way back in 2003! The cathedral is fabulous. I'm not overly religious or anything but it really is an imposing building and looked brilliant in the sun.

Great stuff!Funny you should mention York. The last time I went there was with hubby (ages ago when we both had money to burn) and I loved the place. The previous time I'd been was with school..I was about 13. John bought a new jacket in York and I managed to find a sequined black bag for going out (we still have both) lol. For the bag it was the last shop we visited and John was sooo patient...all day! The Shambles has been voted the best place to shop...or something. It's ace! All those extremely old buildings. So, I may go to York again with Mum - say in October perhaps? When she's off work again. I'll have a think!

totally true. the only thing that keeps me to have faith and keep me going despite the problems i am in, is the belief that there is something that i can look forward to, that the hardship or problems i am going through is working out a good life or peaceful life that i am long for in the near future. so the sooner i deal with my problems in life the sooner i can see this things come to realization. if i am not looking forward to something then every thing i am going through would be meaningless , pointless and were just a waste of time and of every thing. like i am hoping that i can live an easy like visiting some beautiful places but for now i can't because of many factors, like lack of money, situation in life and etc. and so i am hoping that i will be able to solve all these problems i have and be able to reach my goal.

Awww, I can tell that you are struggling with your life but I can also tell that you never fail to give up hope and it's that that keeps you going. I actually think of beautiful places in my head which is nearly as good as visiting the real thing!

I think it is very important to have something to look forward to for motivation. It is very hard to find energy and you can easily become depressed if you have nothing to look forward to. I have just finished a busy period in which I had an old friend visit from interstate and then I went away on holiday for a week by myself to an island that I have always wanted to visit and then my wife and I went away for a weekend by ourselves with no kids. These were all awesome experiences and ones that I had been looking forward to for months and even years in the case of the island trip. Now that they are all done though, i am feeling a little depressed as I am back to the reality of normal life with no great trips or anything fantastic to look forward to in the immediate future. It is time to get to work on my house and try to sell it. I have to somehow look forward to that again so that I can motivate myself to do the required work!

Wow, you've been busy...and you're about to get even busier lol! Good for you! By the way, have you heard about the latest antics of Greenpeace..claiming to have shut down 50 BP Service Stations in London? I have mixed feelings about it, to be honest. For starters, the staff in the shops taking the money (I know for a fact) are on miniscule wages so they're going to be affected..as in, no wages for the day. Motorists who WERE Greenpeace supporters have suddenly decided (surprise, surprise) that Greenpeace have acted unlawfully and they are about to cancel their memberships forthwith! People make me laugh..because the action directly affects THEM they don't like it, but if the activists are in the Amazon rainforests or some other far-flung country..oh, well, they support that hands down. It never fails to amaze me how fickle people are! What's your take on it?

Hello Janey. I think we should all have something to look forward to now and then. Even if it's just a quiet night out or a meal at a friends it's something for us to think about when we're bored or feeling a bit fed up. I don't need loads of money to enjoy myself, I'm happy to go for a walk with the dog and stop and chat to people. We're going on our holidays soon and I'm really looking forward to that. Whenever I'm fed up I look at the calendar and it cheers me up to see how close it is until we go :)

Yes, life can be stressful from time to time, and it is very good to have something to look forward to, providing we are not over-stressed looking forward to it! Like it can't come fast enough! For instance, we sold our house just over a year ago and had had a bid excepted on a different house away form the city in a much quieter area. We were really looking forward to it, but because of all the uncertainty of the market we were getting quite stressed at time that the whole deal would fall through. I practice meditation and have done for some 30 odd years, and that helped a great deal. I got into the habit of thinking that if it was meant to happen then it would. Well it must have been because 2 months later we were in our new house and could relax and stop worrying about whether about every little piece of bad news regarding the housing market. We were in and that was that. If the value went down, it wouldn't make any difference because we have no intention of moving again. _Derek

That's what I like to hear! Good for you and I'm glad it all worked out well for you. I can't understand people who move into a house and only stay there for a few years. Fair enough, if they end up with kids I can understand moving to a bigger house..but those who move just to make money annoy me no end because it's THEM who drive the prices up. Carlisle is notoriously bad (in my opinion) for houses being over-priced, especially if I compare it with Blackpool (and I often do) because we had "speculators" coming in a few years ago, here to make a quick buck and it has - subsequently forced houses up that, quite frankly, are nothing short of dumps lol. OK, rant over!

It definitely is important to always have something to look forward to. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. It could be anything, or anyone, that you really like. I'm busy with work every day, but I still manage to find things to look forward to every day, like meeting my boyfriend, reading good books, relaxing in front of the TV, and all other things that I feel like doing.

We all need something to look forward to. Hopes and dreams are what motivate us. It would be a dull existence if we didn't have something to wish for.

I do. I would like to have something to look forward to. But like so many, I sometimes feel I am financially crippled because of uncertainties in the future. Sometimes in the process of living, I forget to live. But of course I don't think I am not that bad. I do have some holiday times coming up where I try to teach myself to ease up and to live a little.

I do love that sentence "sometimes in the process of living, I forget to live." That definitely applies to me, without a doubt. I accept things that I wouldn't dream of accepting a few years ago..like being cooped up in the house for example. However, I do keep myself busy and the thought of seeing my folks and travelling to Edinburgh with Mum this coming Saturday is enough to make me feel good about myself. It's only one trip out but one is better than none..and we'll be on a Virgin train so will be there in no time lol.

Oh yes, it makes every day life easier to handle. Otherwise life just goes on and on without anything really happening, so yeah, it is definitely important to have something that breaks that routine.

That's a very good point. I can have long periods where nothing really happens, then suddenly me and hubby get invited to an event somewhere (like Carlisle races recently) and I take loads of photos to remind me that, even in tough times we can still have a laugh and enjoy ourselves once in a while.

It's fun to have something to look forward, there is always excitement and a challenge to achieved that thing. I am looking forward to my retirement, where I can stay at home, doing full time on my earning online activities, taking care of my family as full time mother, attend to my garden. Although I'm a bit sad, but excited, for me it's a change of life I have to accept and enjoy.

Welcome to MyLot my friend. It's good that you are embracing the changes that lie ahead. We all have to accept them don't we? I'm slowly getting into gardening myself and become quite excited when something new starts to grow. My Mum has grown some Sweet Peas, something she hasn't done for a long time. She tells me on the phone that they are doing really well so I'm looking forward to seeing her garden again when we go and pick her up on Thursday evening.

I always look forward to a bright future... and how can I achieve this will depend on how I plan myself, my family and finances. Obviously, it is important that we have something to look forward to... that means we never stop on doing our best to achieve our GOALS in life.

I can tell you are a very optimistic person, which is definitely a good thing. Optimism is something that us Ariens are experts at..refuse to give in. I have had periods of depression in my life but have always managed to come out the other side unscathed..as in, not taking tablets which would probably make me feel worse, but I do appreciate that they work for many people out there. Yes, optimism is good and keeps us going! Good look with attaining your goals, I am sure you will.

I totally agree, its so important to having something to look forward to. I f I didn't have something I would never be able to make it through all the either bad or extremely boring times in my life. I for one am extremely excited about starting back up at college in August. I go to University of Miami and I'm definitely ready to get back to my friends and the beach.

Yes, we all need something to look forward to. I saw a report this year that said that anticipating a vacation often does as much for a person as the actual time away. Isn't that neat! Therefore it concluded that frequent small getaways that we plan in advance can really do a lot for our health and well being. I cannot spend much right now for little get aways, but do you realize how beautiful a well landscaped park is? It is fun and restful to feed the goldfish in the park or the ducks and geese. We enjoy drives in the country. A picnic prepared from really good food is a treat if we both work on it. We can go swim at the lake or take advantage of many other free activities in and around our city. We are saving up for another big getaway, because hubby has not seen his sisters in years. We will have to see how that turns out, though. Have a wonderful holiday and visit with your mum.

That has really cheered me up, knowing that you get out and about on occasion. Yes, we have parks in this city too, although the weather has been awful the last few days (apart from one lovely, sunny day when hubby was at work)! It would be lovely to have a full week of sun like we had in..er, May!! That was the last time I was at Mum's so I'm hoping the sun will be out when I'm there again very soon. We used to drive out into the countryside more when John worked locally but we cannot do that anymore as he pays a fair bit for his petrol (and his car is old and not exactly fuel-efficient) but I'd rather us be frugal than go out and get into debt doing that, if that makes sense. I wish you success in saving up for your hubby to see his sisters. Do they live far away?

Yes, absolutely! Without nothing to look forward to each day, life would be boring and meaningless. I personally make it a point that I have planned for weekends whether it be small or big. It's always exciting at the end of the day, after long hours of work in the office, to think about the activity that I will be doing in the coming days.
