To make more money I have considered renting out a room in my house. Has anyone done this? How did it work out? How did you find someone to rent the room to? Let me know your thoughts.

I would not be capable of doing this unless I knew the person I was renting to. I am so leary of people, I don't trust anyone.. and with kids in the house you never know what could happen. That's just me though, I look at everyone like they're a child molester.. I'm neurotic like that. But you also have to take into consideration what would happen if the person stops paying their rent. Unless you have a written lease agreement.. you can't force them to leave! I don't know about the laws where you are, but here if you let someone move into your home, there's nothing you can do to get them out. A friend of mine just went through this recently.. she let a friend stay with her for months, and the person didn't pay her a cent and refused to leave, and my friend couldn't do anything about it. Her landlord almost kicked my friend out because of it.. it was a huge nightmare. Eventually the girl did leave and life got back to normal for my friend, but it took months and months and my friend was completely miserable the whole time! If you decide to do this you have to do some homework! Figure out the laws, figure out what you need to do to ensure you'll get your rent on time, and what to do if you don't get your rent.. and of course keep in mind this person could destroy some of your property, either by accident or on purpose, so figure out what you must do in case that happens as well. And of course do your homework on the person who's moving in.. do background checks and talk to previous landlords. Good luck, I hope you make the right decision!

I don't think that is a bad idea actually you know you can always make some money renting out a room in your house. My mom has done it before and had no problems at all so in the end it allw worked out for the best. So if you want to make some money go for it just be careful of who you choose to rent the room out too because not everybody always has the best of luck to renting it out to a kind person sometimes they may be a tad rebillious or something you never know. Anyway have a nice day and good luck.

I am not so sure that I would want to rent out a room in my house, but I WOULD like to have a detached apartment in my yard to rent out to someone. You really have to be careful who you let into your house, but I think it would be safe to have someone renting out a room that was not attached to your house. I guess you could make some extra money doing it, but be very careful...

My uncle who is a hairdresser done this on her house. I remember that she passed out the rumor about it through her customers and also in the local newspaper.
