would you cover your nose and mouth in this case?

Just this afternoon I and my niece were taking the public transport and we were seated across this woman who was coughing and coughing non-stop. I elbowed my niece to cover her mouth and nose because the woman was only using her hand to unsuccessful cover her mouth while coughing. The cough was heading our way and I could not help but cover my mouth and nose as well. I knew it was sort of insulting to her but I also didn't want to get sick. How about you? Would you have done the same thing or would you be nice enough to pretend and suffer in silence while you inhale or catch her hard cough?

As much as I hate to, I still would cover my nose. I don't care if she would feel offended. She must know that coughing without covering her mouth and nose with a hanky is very unhygienic. More so, it promotes spread of whatever infection she may have. For all we know she has untreated tuberculosis! Would you like to catch that just because you wanna look polite? definitely no.

I have allergies and sometimes it gets so bad I get larengitus from it but that doesn't mean I am passing around an infection. I try to take care of myself however by going to the doctor and making sure of what I have and taking medicine for it. A woman that doesnt recognize that a whooping cough like that needs therapy or needs to have a wake up call.

In such case , I won't close my nose and mouth, instead I will give my handkerchief to her and tell her to cover her mouth while coughing. Some people they are aware of the fact that while coughing ,the germs goes to the person who is sitting next to you. They are innocent in such things. It would be our responsibilities to guide them in a proper way and give them advices.

In that case and in your situation, yes I will surely cover my nose and even my mouth. Although, I always cover my nose every time I am riding a jeepney. Why? Because dirt is everywhere. In your case, virus can easily spread and may hit you immediately. For me, that is not an unkind or impolite attitude because you are just saving yourself from the viral infection that may hit you especially your niece who may have a lower resistance.

It is such a hard situation when you balance your politeness and your own self welfare, my option would be if i could transfer seat I will, but if i am stuck to her side, then I will try to control by breathing as not to inhale the air she expels, or I am not in the mood to be nice I will probably get off the bus, or last resort I will tell her to cover his mouth because i have problems with my immune system..hehe

Would she understand "immune system"? The woman concerned looked like she did not know the term.

I think I would do the same especially if she coughs like she's turning red (or something similar to that). In these times where some diseases can be caught air-borne, we need to be on guard all the time to make sure that we take care of our health. Other people do not see the importance unless they catch the disease themselves. We should take the necessary precaution. On your case, if the lady could not stop coughing, you can politely offer her a tissue or maybe move to another place. Remember, it is better to be careful.

Sorry for that seemingly embarrassing moment but you've got to do anything to protect yourself.Cough is highly contagious. You cannot just sit there and watch when you now that you are in total risk of contracting a disease.Prevention is always better than cure.i would have done the same.

Yes, I would definitely cover up my nose and mouth if somebody was coughing germs into the air near me. It is well-know that this is one of ways that cold and other germs are spread around. _Derek

If I deal with such situation. Yes, to cover my nose and mouth is a must whether I'm in public transport because I don't want to get cold or other illness, it's painful and not comfortable when I get sick.

I also have encountered people who don't cover their mouth when they cough and don't cover their nose when they sneeze. Some people don't have good manners or don't care whether they get another person sick. People like that make me want to walk away from them because I don't want to get their germs and get sick. You could have politely asked her to cover her mouth properly. If she doesn't do that, then you using your hand to cover your mouth is fine, it's better than getting sick. Or you could sit somewhere else if there was an empty seat available or walk away. Maybe you should bring a mask with you next time so that when this happens you can give it to the person that's coughing or you can wear it yourself.

Yes I know that I would even though I don't want to be mean or anything I don't want to end up sick you know because then if I'm sick I am just going to be lying around all lazy and such and that's not what I want at all. Being sick is the worst thing, but your just watching out for you and your nieces health nothing wrong with that. I always have to watch myself because my immune system is very weak.

I maybe sorry for the rest of my life if I don't cover my nose and my mouth. When it regards with my health, I always prioritize to protect myself. Maybe the old woman will understand; she's covering her mouth also. Some aged people is so hard to be reprimanded and you did the right thing.

If I was that sick, I wouldn't be on the bus. If this did happen I wouldn't care because it is great immunity protection.

I probably would have done the same thing. I don't think it was rude at all unless of course you gave her a scowling look or something of that nature. There is nothing rude about protecting yourself. In fact se was rather rude for not covering her own mouth.

as much as possible, I will cover my mouth and nose bcause according to my doctor we can catch up the virus that get inside and out from the person's lungs. We inhale it and it will live in our body. But If I am the one coughing in the public, I am responsible to my actions to cover my mouth as a respect to those around me.

Good! You should do that with that notion. I would have also done that if that is the case. It is better to prevent our self, even though it seems insulting.

If I was the one coughing or sneezing in public, I wouldn't take any offense if people around me started covering their noses and mouths. So, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't protect myself from virus or bacteria. Self-preservation is human nature. Nothing offensive or insulting about that.
