I was watching the national geographic channel that highlighted the challenges of monkeys as pets. There are many legislators that want to prohibit monkeys as pets, what do you think of the issue and why? Prosperous mylotting

Different people have their own versions but I think if you can make a pet of a monkey why not! I dont see any harm in that. When you can have a dog or cat or horse or even sheep or goat or cow as a pet why not a monkey. In case you want to have a pet Monkey you should consult the laws prevalent at your place to avoid hustles later. I dont know why the Govt. wants to prohibit this... maybe is it because they feel that monkeys will become scarce and not available for the so called medical research?

Herro theside Herro Torunn Opposite responses, then add manleyjoe into the equation. I'll answer manley next response. thesids: If you had seen the programs and saw that monkeys "adopted" by "monkey parents" require a lot of training. The monkey never matures beyond a 2yr old toddler for up to 40years. Their diet is very specific. If you feed them human food, they get human diseases, like diabetes. Monkeys are alpha males and will challenge the male in the household. They have sibling rivalry. Torunn has an excellent handle on the risk of keeping monkeys as pets. Prosperous mylotting

Have you ever witnessed what a mature monkey can do to a man? By your answer I would have to assume that you have not. A Monkey is a wild animal and should be allowed to be free, if it takes laws to help this animal to maintain it's freedom then so be it.

Because horses, sheep and goat have been domesticated and bred by humans by ages, most of them wouldn't survive in the wild anymore so we really have to continue taking care of them. Wild animals are, well, wild, and really belongs in the wild. There's quite a few domesticted animals to chose from so why take animals away from their natuarl environment? Yes, that's what we did when we domesticated the animals we have as pets etc today, but for most of them it's some years ago. (several 1000 years in many cases) Reasons they'd want to stop it. Well, monkeys can be dangerous. Many of them are endangered. Many have quite specific diets and are flock animals, meaning they won't be happy on their own. Like horses. My horse would be very stressed if I moved him somewhere with no other horses. According to some documentary I've seen there's a huge surplus of monkeys (and apes) for medical research. They breed them and don't really know what to do with the "extra ones". So I doubt that's the reason.

I would prohibit all kinds of wild animals as pets. They suffer and are also dangerous. There is no need to have a wild animal as a pet. It is taking a free animal and putting it in a prison. That is not an act of love but one of pride.

Herro marguicha Right on, marguicha. Wild animals are meant to be in the wild, unless there is a reason to be on a preserve or in a zoo, properly cared for. I like your comment about the issue being pride and not love. "Monkey Parents" say it is love. They call them their children. Prosperous mylotting

I understand domestic animals as friends ( I have a dog). Lola is lovely, naughty, playful, intelligent, you name it. She is my friend. But she is not, and will never be, my child. When you are a parent of a real child, part of your love is to let him/her go at a certain age. You teach your child some things, prepare them as much as you can for life and then let them make their own mistakes. That is freedom and that is love. These monkey "children" are so taken away from their way of life that you cannot even take them back to where they belong when they grow up as they are not capable of surviving among their own. So they have to be "children" (dumb children as human beings go) for all their lives. It´s disgusting. I think it makes more sense to use animals for experiments (although there are lots of buts there too) than to torture a poor animal just to say "I have a monkey" (or "a tiger" or whatever). Of course some animals in danger of extintion have to be helped out if we can. But that is not what this post is about.

Herro marguicha I appreciate your input. It says what a lot of feel very concisely and concretely. Thank you for taking the time to continue the discussion. I like your definition of our responsibility to our children vs our pets. How do we mature a permanent two year old toddler (an animal) not a disabled child. Prosperous mylotting

No, no, no monkeys. I understand monkeys that are hurt or have "special" needs, can't be released in the wild, or even in the zoos sometimes. But people who actually set out to have a monkey as a pet, they decide from the get go, I want a monkey to live with, to treat as my baby...it's not right. Monkeys and chimpanzees have been in the news lately for attacking humans that are their owners, or that they are around often. It's not their fault - monkeys and humans shouldn't live together like humans and cats or dogs.

Herro AmbiePam Monkeys need special diet and are very unpredictable. The thought that struck the most serious cord was having a two yr old toddler for up to 40 years. Do they have monkey medical insurance? And the infant is at least $5000. Just one difficulty after another. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to this discussion. Prosperous mylotting

I did not see the program that you refer to but I have seen "pet" monkey that tried to become the dominate male in the family and severely wounded the owner. The monkey was put down because it was doing what comes naturally. I think that laws should be enacted to ban the attempt to domesticate any wild animal or reptile. FL now has an issue with "pet" boa and anacondas that have been released and now pose danger to small dogs and children.

Herro manleyjoe Right on, manleyjoe. After seeing the programs, I think it should be banned to have wild animals as pets. The issue in Florida is very sad. Those anacondas can kill adults too. The problem with outlawing monkeys as pets is it an extremely lucrative business. One lady who raised monkey mother's and took their babies at 3days. She said she had 2 mothers that had been with her for 19years. Can you imagine a mother having her baby snatched from her at 3days that many times. I would think the mother went through a grieving process as well as the infants. Medical care is very expensive too. I appreciate your input. Prosperous mylotting

ok, no more regulations please. i know when something really bad pops up on the news about the monkey who went wild and injured 2 people that its bad. it doesn't mean their needs to be another law though. people should know the warning signs and know they are doing it at their own risk if someone does get a monkey as a pet. there's enough laws already.

Herro elmiko I understand that some people think we have too many regulations. The important thing to remember is man is not obeying the current regulations. Many states of banned monkeys as pets due to the danger. The real problem I see is the lucrative infant monkey trade. An infant is $5000 to start. His special diet, training, etc... Unpredictability, sibling rivalry. Prosperous mylotting

Herro fayas123 Some people have monkeys as pets. The show I saw on national geographic showed people who adopted monkeys, called themselves "monkey parents" and called their monkey's children. See above comments. Prosperous mylotting

Herro fayas123 Yes, we are all different, however, some behaviors are inappropriate. I understand different cultures have different mores. I understand that some people believe that monkey's can be "adopted". I do not. I cannot imagine having a two year old toddler for 30-40 years. I had my son, he progressed through the years, and now has his own child and wife and life. No monkeys for me. Prosperous mylotting

oh, my, i had a bad experience with monkeys when i visited an aunt in the province (i was still in college then). unsuspecting that there was a monkey in the backyard, i walked to the hanging bed which was tied to the trees. the monkey attacked me. it was a good thing that he, too, was tied to a tree.

Herro bingskee Welcome to mylot. I appreciate you sharing your experience. Monkey's or any wild anmal put into a human habitat is unpredictable. The only example I can think of that was different was a story about a lion, made many years ago. I searched for the year it was made - 1966. That was as I was graduating from high school and joining the military. It was a wonderful movie. I believe there was one sequel. When you see the wild animals that are on TV, like crocodiles, there is usually an accident. I remember the one person that was killed. Snakes kill people. Prosperous mylotting

I think monkeys should stay in their natural area, on trees, rather than in a human house.. they are not meant to entertain people.

Herro jimeny It seems the most of my responses agree with you. There are too many dangers at attempting to keep a wild animal as a pet, regardless of what it is. Prosperous mylotting

Betty B. in North Carolina a very old friend friend had a monkey that attacked her in her own bed one night while she was asleep, Samantha got out of her cage, and went down to the end bedroom and attacked her. I hate to say it but Betty was lucky to be alive. Betty still has Samantha even after 2 more attacks on Betty over the past 20 years. This monkey also attacked Betty's on grand daughter. Yet she still has it. I am waiting for the day when Samantha kills Betty, and then they have to kill Samantha. I don't believe that Monkeys should be kept as pets. Betty had a smaller monkey as well, Angel, and she was just that she was an Angel. But the bigger monkeys which can tear you apart I do not believe that people need them, spider monkeys are small and even though they can bite, normally they wont unless if you hurt one. But I however believe that bigger monkeys in homes should be outlawed.

Herro pmbhundtress09 I apreciate you taking the time to comment. It is ironic that there is a pet monkey that got loose and damaged the car. he occupant was exceptionally lucky not to be injured. I stand on my ground from months ago, Monkey's should not be pets. The pet that got loose has been captured and turned over to animal control. The authorities are debating whether to file charges. I believe a minimum of criminal damage to the car should be filed. Oh well, JMHO Prosperous mylotting

Monkeys as pets. It's really weird because most monkeys prefer to live in the jungle and not in other people's home, unless the monkey could adapt to changes quickly. Monkeys are also animals that prefer to live in groups rather than being all alone. It could cause a commotion for monkeys to live with us because they could cause really loud noise, especially when the get angry ().
