Do you think vigilantes are a solution to rising crime rate?

In my place crime rates is slowly dwindling due to vigilantes wiping out most criminals on the street. Although this is already a drastic measure, I think people who constantly repeat the same crime every time they get out of prison are already hopeless in changing for the better. That is why I see no harm in those reports about vigilantes since they only take out those criminals who have a long list of criminal record. What is you point of view on this?

Although it is against the law but their are just criminals who really have no chance of changing. These vigilantes only take out these types of criminals.

With those vigilantes the criminals will adapt to their surroundings to protect themselves. Its like evolution. After a while the criminals will know how the vigilantes work and get back at them with new tactics. They should just do a complete sweep but that would be hard. I can't suggest anything else. Well, If you look back in time, during the marshal law there are very few crimes because everyone is watched.

Hello Gorillafootprints, I would rather choose vigilantes over martial law. Martial law will only result to abuses. Wherein vigilantes are mostly checked by the police. I guess the reason why the police aren't exerting a lot of effort in hunting these vigilantes down is because the vigilantes are only executing criminals. The problem with martial law is that nobody is going to check the military and thus it will result in abuse of power.

I suppose that vigilantes would be a solution when there are not enough police men in the area or when the area is too wild and dangerous for decent people. However, once an area or country has a sufficient police force, there is no need for vigilantes. There is one thing wrong, however, many do not know the appropriate punishment for the crime and often may kill someone who just stole. In other words, they may get over enthusiastic in meting out justice or get carried away. I do think that if there are vigilantes that they be trained and if there is any crime worthy of murder, that they turn them over to the police. However forcing a thief to work to pay for his crime or for someone who threw a brick into a store owner's window to sweep the floor, etc. and work to make up for it would be appropriate. I do believe, however, that neighborhood patrols would be a good idea.

People helping the police is a good idea and on the surface a vigilante seems to do a service--but what if someone they catch is innocent? Do vigilantes kill these criminals or turn them in? I'm all for catching and turning them in but not for executing.

Every person needs someone to listen to them and be with them. More than the discipline a loving word causes them shed tears and even a hard heart melts down

I'm scared of vigilantes. They are not different from those they killed. Though they eliminate only those who caused trouble to the society they will not be afraid to kill anymore because they have already done it.

no andyvil I do not think its the real answer to crime as the criminal will just adjust then it will be battles between the vigilates and the criminals with innocent people being killed as the t wo sides make real war. it is only in movies that this seems to work but in real life I think it wo uld be a diseaster. also what if the vigilantes suddenely turned political and the republicans paid them to take out all the democrats, no no no you just have one set of criminals in respect killing another set of criminals. There has to be a b etter way than usingf hoodlums to kill other hudlums.

I can't see a vigilante as a solution to crime. Taking the law into your own hands is not a solution to any problem. it will usually go the other way. vigilantes only add to the exisiting problem. They sometimes make things worse than they were. The law should take care of punishing criminals without the help of vigilantes.

Much as I wish that there would be a superhero that walks among the masses and would come to my aid when I get into trouble, vigilanteism is just not the answer. For one, these are also people too and they can commit mistakes. If that happens, there would no way to make them answer. Plus, the stress of playing judge and executioner is dangerous on anyone.

the ends don't justify the means. it's poverty that caused people to do drastic things which could jeopardize themselves. yes, vigilantes bore positive results for those who are not directly involved but how do you think would a family member of the victim react? more often they won't feel remorse but instead want to have revenge. That would start a cycle where people start to take the law into their own hands. Another problem with these vigilantes is what if they don't have work anymore? these people have families to feed too so where would the get the money to feed them? i don't think someone who has a 9-5 job will take being a vigilante as his part time job. So naturally they will use what they're good at for their own advantage so they can have food on the table. That means killing for a living. I don't know if it's true but it's a rumor that those abu sayyaf were trained by the military, i don't know if it's us or the US, to be mercenaries. When they lost their jobs the went from being mercenaries to terrorists against their own country. You can't help but wonder because if these people are not professional trained in warfare, they could have been easily neutralized.

I dont really think that vigilantes are the solution to rising crime rate because new criminals will still continue to arise. AS long as babies will be born, potential criminals will still continue to arise. And you cant keep killing every criminals, because it will never really end. I think the solution would be changing the hearts of people, because it is from their heart the people do crimes. If they have evil hearts then they will commit crime and not, they will do good.

The spread of vigilante activities means the effectiveness of law enforcement totally collapsed in that place. People putting the law in their own hands may have the "good" intentions intentionally, but their activities itself is unregulated and lawless. That means they can do whatever they want regardless of the law, and in many instances vigilantes become criminals themselves. This is because killing people makes them powerful, and as we all know, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

A mistake can never be corrected by another mistake. Vigilantes is a mistake this will never solve anything. It will just worsen. Since this criminals families will try to revenge their fallen relative. Then the fight will go on between vigilantes and criminals.

With or without vigilantes criminals will exist. But check out Davao City's peace and order.

It really is quite drastic and extreme. It is like losing hope in the ability of humanity to change for the better. And besides, you get rid of one, others are on the making. It would be better perhaps to look at the root of the problem why these things occur and act accordingly, in a positive and constructive way. I still have faith in man, I suppose.
