We went on a trip yesterday, and when I was driving my car on a highway I've noticed a poodle with his head stuck out the car window. I drove behind that car for almost half an hour, and things didn't changed - the dog kept his head out of the window all the time. He seemed to enjoy himself, but I wonder if it was a safe way to travel. What do you think, it is safe for dogs to stick their head out of the car window? Do you let your dogs do so? What is the most safe way to travel with a dog in a car?

I have seen this too and thought that it can not be safe. I understand that people love their pets and want to give them special privileges but I don't think that is the way to go about. The dog should be in a seat belt or harness. I also don't think it is very safe when I see someone driving with a dog on their lap or stretched across them. We would not do this with kids why do it with pets?

I don't think that is the best thing to do especially if on a highway it is way to dangerous for dogs to do that. I would never let my dog stick her head out the window because I would get worried if she did that I would never think of that. Some dog owners do let their dogs stick their heads out the window, but I won't way to risky and I care about my dear chihuahua dog named COCO. She is so adorable. I would be worried that she would just fly out the window and that would be the end of her and I do not want that because then she would be gone and me I would be sad. It's up to us dog owners to take good care of our dogs so that they will live forever more. Anyway good question I really enjoyed responding to your discussion. I will spread the word that is not safe. Happy mylotting, ANIME123 is out.

I'm sure you take good care of Coco. I feel chihuahuas are so fragile, they seem to need more care than other dogs. And their exposed eyes would surely have to suffer if they stuck their heads out the window during a car ride. I don't know why some dog owners are so irresponsible and don't think about their dogs' safety.

I think it's safe as long as they are harnessed in with a special harness for dogs. In fact, a dog hanging it's head out can help with carsickness and if not, at least they won't be throwing up inside the car.. I say this because I noticed the last couple times we took Penny out, (she is the one that gets really carsick) that when she has her head out, she doesn't get sick..But I am also holding onto her, so she can't jump out.

You know I always thought about buying one of those special seat belt for dogs. But both Nera and Binne behaved very well during car rides, and I forgot about the harness. Nera used to sit on the back seat and watch out the window. She didn't move a lot during a car ride. Binne doesn't like to watch out the window, she rather sleeps on the back seat, or on the floor, behind the driver's seat. She feels so confortable inside the car, like it were her second home! You know the best how much help in carsickness could bring to a dog hanging her head out the window. But I won't be so sure that if she must throw up, she won't throw up inside the car...

It is dangerous to let the dog stick their heads out. There is the possibility that the dog will jump out of the window or a motorcyclist riding pass closely and hitting the dog on its head.

It's true. But there are more risks than jumping out the window or being hit by a motorcyclist or a truck. I think it is not safe for the dogs' eyes, they might get some dirt in their eyes while travelling like that. After all, why do we use wind shield on our convertible cars?

I no longer have a dog but when I had I didn't let her put her head out of the window as we were driving, though I had a mesh at the window so that the window could be wound right down without her sticking her head out. Yes, they do enjoy the sensation there is no doubt but for safeties sake I would say no. Firstly I would worry about her getting something in her eye as were driving along and secondly I have seen a video of a motorcyclist who leant too far over the line as a lorry was coming the other way..this guy lost his head and that sticks in my mind..that could be your dog if a lorry comes too close.

Yes, eye injuries would have been my first worry too, if my dog had travelled with her head out the window. But she doesn't travel like that. I don't open her window more than 2 inches, so if she wants, she can just smell the air flow without sticking her head out the window. I just think about those early drivers, who, beside the wind shield of the car, used those funny glasses to protect their eyes. They also used to wear those pilot helmets to protect their ears. Why would be safe for a dog to travel without protection glasses and a helmet?

I don't think Its safe, so therefore I don't allow my dog to stick his head out the window. As others said, it is far to risky. There are some many things that could pose as a threat to your dog. I simply roll down the window just enough so he can stick the tip of his nose out, and thats it. . no further.

That's exactly what I do for my dog. I open her window less than 2 inches, so she can just feel the breeze with her nose. But, until now, she hasn't been interested in what happens outside the car. She rather sleeps during car rides, because she is either too tired (when we come back from a trip) or too lazy (when we leave home early).

I think this is gross irresponsibility from dog owners-it is far too risky in places where there are traffic congestions, but the good thing is that dogs have very reliable security instincts, so the worry need not be too much.

Me too I think it was irresponsibility from that poodle's owner. I even thought to try to stop him, and tell him this is not a good ideea to let the dog travel this way. Luckylly the poodle didn't jump out the car window, but I think there are more other risks than only jump out the car.

I don't think it is safe to let any kind of dog, big or small, have their head stuck out of a window. Children have been decapitated or just plain killed by sticking their heads out of windows on the bus and hitting their heads on street signs or tree branches. Windows are there for a reason, stay inside of the car at all time, you wouldn't drive with the car door wide open, would you?

Good point, Tresaqwe. Windows are there to protect us inside the car, otherwise we should travel like in carriages, shouldn't we? I'd like if any dog owner thought the same. I would have liked it if the dog owner that inspired this discussion had thought a little before allowing his poodle to stick his head out the window for so long.

dogs do this because they can smell all different kind of things.two its alright for the dogs to do this since they have good sence when they need to stick their head in the window, now you got a few dumb dogs out there who ive seen jumped from a moving car just to pee. it would suck if they didnt see a sign or a branch..

You're right, dogs have the good sence to know when to stick their head in the window. But there are some other risks from which dogs can't protect themselves. I'm talking about dust and insects in their eyes or swollen ears because of the air flow. It's us, the owners, who have to be sure they are safe, don't you think so?

Thank you, Bad_Daddy55, I wish you came earlier in this discussion, your post is so sharp. I haven't seen any of those cases you enumerated above, but I can imagine what damages can a dog suffer from few minutes of fun.

You're a responsible owner. Good for you that you don't let your dog stick her head out the car window. Inside the car is a much safer place for our dogs.

We may not see anything wrong with allowing a dog to stick their head out the window. After all, we are only trying to give them fresh air and keep them cool. I believe that this practice is not the best one to have. it would be so easy for something to happen. You could have an accident and injure your dog. Your dog couldd also get it into their head to jump out the window. Your dog could also get harmed this way. This just isn't safe for the animal you love. If you need to keep your pet cooled off, it's best for everyone to find a different way to do it.

I don't think a dog will cool himself much if he stick his head out the car window. We better use the air conditioner to cool the inside of the car. Or to avoid car rides during hot days. During summer, we usually go for a car ride early in the morning, when it is not so hot outside.

I am not a dog owner, but have often wondered about that. I am seriously would we let our children stick their heads out in the same manner, absolutely not. We would always think that although the child is happy a wee time with it, they can get seriously hurt. I mean how many times have we not been passed up by a fast moving very close truck. Ugh, there would go the doggies head. Too sad. If I had a dog and I thought opening a window was necessary while they were in the car I would only open it a smidgen enough to allow air flow, but then I suppose I am just a responsible person then.

You're right! A car ride with dogs is like one with children. They might feel great when sticking their heads out the window, but as a parent / dog owner, you have to be responsible and choose what's best for your child / dog. Like always, the things we like in life are either illegal or immoral or make you fat...

We don't let my dog stick her head out our window, because she's a Chihuahua and we're afraid she might try to jump out the window.

Good for you! In fact, Chihuahuas are so small and fragile, they don't need a wide open window to jump out! Do you take some special safety measures for her during a car ride? I mean, do you use a special harness or a dog seat belt?
