What can you do to help kids deal with allergies?

Allergy is a trigger disease. It's a loss of tolerance for things that are not dangerous. Some things are easy to avoid, like food. Dust mites are harder to avoid. There's no way we can have zero percent dust exposure, so we recommend decreasing exposure like reduce the dust-accumulating stuff in the home and less carpets for instance. But what about in school? That's where the medicines and allergy shots in, to control symptoms.

right now i'm suffering from rhinitis allergy. it's really annoying. and my medicines don't seem to work anymore. my body must have become immune by now...after many years of taking this type of anti histamine. i don't know...it seems that there is no way that i can really avoid these triggers.

That happens after awhile, so many medications don't work like they used to when you first came down with those allergies. I fear that that will happen to me eventually with all of my medications, and then I'll be up a creek. And, since I have both Asthma and Allergies, I am afraid of what could happen.

Hi vhienne Welcome. Your concerns are genuine and unfortunately the list of allergens is unique to individuals so some common things are present. Allergy is a phenomenon which is highly unpredictable and the way to avoid are also not very effective. Allergy shots are only for particular sorts of allergy which can be serious and not universally effective. Luckily most kids grow out of their allergies as their immune system matures

I agree to that, so the best way to prevent or overcome allergies is to strengthen overall physical resistance so as not to fall an easy prey to every allergen that one comes across. Also to start with, kids should fast on fresh fruit juices for four to five days, mono diet for vegetables and employ go relaxation as well as exercise.

Dear friend, I hope it would be better to discuss this matter with the head class teacher, so that the school would be aware of child problems and could deal him that a way. Moreover if they may be willing to avoid the child to be in that situations. On other side I hope this could given better medicine or any other ways methods to cure or control allergies.

My niece used to have severe allergy a few years back. Like you, the doctor advised some precautionary measures to be taken so as to avoid triggering the attacks. The parents were even requested to put a humidifier in her room. She was also given an allergy test. They found out that acacia trees and bermuda grass are her biggest allergens and these are prominent in her school surroundings. Thereafter, my niece was advised to stay away from the school gardens and was prescribed something to boost her immune system aside from her allergy meds. Right now, she's hardly getting allergy attacks.

Yes it is very difficult to avoid allergy diseases for school going children. I heard that doctors conduct a series of tests and decide as to which food etc causes allergy to a person. Therefore it is better get such tests on our children and avoid foods . There seems to be no other way.

desensitization is a good help for that but if the child cant still tolerate his/her allergy maybe ha/she should bring with him antihistamine all the time because sometime it can be very fatal...

Well, being that I have this problem, you can have them wear face mask when you are cleaning. Make sure that your house is always clean and dust free for them. Make sure that you know what their allergies are (an allergies test can help with this, but remember it can be painful, so you might want to wait until they are older and can understand what is going on), make sure that the vents and air filters are clean, and NO PETS! Dogs and cats carry allergens on them, and your children might not be able to handle those allergens, so you might want to be aware of that. You can give them allergy shots, but it's the same as the allergy test, painful. I recommend, nasal sprays, Benedryl and Tylenol for Allergies if you can get if, but please consult a doctor before using this stuff. I have had Asthma and Allergies my entire life and I have learned through a lot of trial and error when it comes to dealing with allergies.

Dealing with allergies as a child can be difficult depending on the age of the child. Very young children do not understand exactly what is going on and when they start school they want to fit in. So, a lot of times in the lower grades, you have to enlist the teachers and school nurse to help. Don't make it scary; but, make sure they understand the basic problem. As they get older it is easier to explain what is happening and gain their cooperation and understanding. They also have gained confidence and are more likely to speak up for themselves. In the teen years, you are likely to get some rebellion though; especially, if you have been able to keep them safe from severe allergic reactions. They are very likely to attempt an experiment to see if they really have an allergy, to see if an allergic reaction is as bad as you have been telling them, or to see if they have outgrown their allergy. They are also trying to "fit in" and are more likely to give in to peer pressure. If you have photos of them with a nasty rash or a video of them sneezing repeatedly and/or going to the emergency room; now is the time to bring it out as a reminder.

hi vhienne children are prone to the same allergies as the rest 'of us so see an allergist doctor and find out what exactly they are'allergic too. then you can keep your house as dirtfree as possible with the newer vacuums that have hepa filters to filter out all the allergens. If your children are allergic to peanuts or other nuts you must contact the teacher of your child's class and inform them so that nobody brings anything that has even touched peanuts ino the class room, the school system will have to know so that your children are not exposed to peanuts in the school or school yard at recess time.I am told that a lot of kids do o utgrow this allergy.you need to start with an allergist doctor however and have the tests then go from there.
