what is your favorite variation of a granny square? I usually just do a basic granny. But I'm trying to make something a lil different and I can't find something that I like to go with a hello kitty square I'm working on that won't take away from the HK squares. Any ideas?

I have been crocheting for a few years now and I still have no idea how to amek a granny square, I know that I have been told by numerous people that the granny square is one of the easiest crochets to make but for some reason I can't seem to get it down. I have had my aunt teach me it a few times but it never seems to stick. I still crochet but all of my blankets or other items that I make are all done in the same single basic stitch which take forever to make LOL

I think I would do a basic granny stitch, but all in one color, so it would not detract from the patterned squares you are working on. Then when they are all assembled, take another color and crochet a border around the whole thing, possible a darker color than the main ones you used.

I would love love love LOVE if I could make granny squares but I positively stink at crocheting. I might take a class at a craft store one day. In any case, I like the variations that make a pattern, like star wars or other themed shows and movies. What popped into my mind for your HK square was popcorn stitch, I thought that I would suggest that and let ya mule over it lol.

I can't be of any help to you here because I honestly don't know how to make a granny square to save my life. It took me forever to learn to crochet at all because of the fact that I'm left handed and my mother, who was the one that was teaching me is right-handed. That said, I do think that it would be awesome if you would make solid colored squares to go with the custom squares that you are working on for the afghan. No matter what you decide to do, I certainly hope that you will share the finished project with us once you get done.
