Texting while driving--Some state are OK with it. But...

United States
September 30, 2010 2:31pm CST
Why is it that some states say it is OK to text and drive? Others say that only teenagers must refrain from texting and driving at the same time. Still other states indicate no texting and driving at the same time for all people. When it comes to texting and driving, why would anyone think that it is only dangerous for people who are over 18 years of age? I don't get it!

I know that in New York state that it is illegal to use a cell phone and drive unless you have a hands free headset. That obviously means that textng in New York state is illegal. As far as I know in Pennsylvania it is legal to use a cell phone and drive. I used to text all the time when I was driving until I saw this video on youtube where these teenage girls got in an accident while texting and driving. That gave me the chills. It definitly got the point across to everyone what they were trying to say in that video clip. It definitly changed my driving style. I almost always pull over to text now. I cant understand though a state saying its ok for someone over 18 to text I mean seriously its bad at any age really! I ran over a big curb once when I was texting. That scared me. Imagine if it had been a person or something. Ugh I'm glad I learned my lesson.

That's right. It should be illegal for all people to text and drive in all state no matter what their age is.

It is absolutely beyond me why this wasn't against the law from the get go. How could anyone possibly look down at a keyboard and watch the road at the same time. I suppose that the reason that they put the age limit on it is because the thought is that age group is more likely to text than those that are older but IMO that is a false assumption. I have a friend that is almost 50 that texts all day long. If driving while talking on a cell phone is against the law in many states why would texting be o.k.?

It's almost like typing on a typewriter and driving. And that sounds impossible.

That's just ridiculous because no one should be texting while driving. When you're driving you should be focused on what you're doing instead of sending some stupid text message.

There is not much difference between drinking and texting.

I don't believe this, some places allow you to text and drive at the same time...? I don't know anyone who can drive and text at the same time without causing an accident. Unless you have a super duper memory and remember all the buttons off by heart and be able to text WITHOUT looking at the phone and be driving an automatic, I suppose, it may be a little less dangerous, but still both hands on the wheel is always the best and safest thing to do!!!

I don't think I would be capable of doing those two things at one time.

I think its really crazy to difference between teenagers and olders about these things, rules must be same for everybody. Coming to texting and driving thing, it should not be permitted in any case as it causes danger not only to the drivers life but also to the other. Everyone should understand that anything can happen on thd road when you are doing both these things simultaneously...

I also think it is avery dangerous thing both for the driver and for the "on foot passengers". In my country it is forbidden even to talk to the phone while you are driving. You can get a ticket for doing this, a jeperdizing your life and the others

It should be, and there was a time people could not talk on the phone while in the car because we did not have cell phones.

So,There are States that have legislation that it's ok to drive and text,or is it just that they have not yet come out and said it's illegal?

So in that case it's only down to common sense not to be texting while you're driving along, and supposedly watching the road and other road users around You..Cellphone usage is banned while mobile and liable to a fine here in the UK,(Never mind texting!)and I still see delivery van drivers talking with a phone to their ear as they drive along..There's concern about the distraction of listening to music, talking or arguing with passengers, and eating or smoking while driving..Cellphones are another thing we don't need to distract ourselves with while driving a ton or two of blunt force at 60mph..

IMO there should be absolutely no texting while driving. Are you kidding me? People can't even just drive anymore! sheesh!I think it should be worth a ticket because you are putting everyone on the road in the way of potential danger by doing so. SOme places don't even allow you to talk on the phone while driving which for teens is a good idea, but for adults... to me it's not much different than talking to other passengers!

..Hi there Yestheypayme2dothis, Texting while driving should be a crime for all drivers in all states in my opinion. But if a state has a low accident rate with hardly any reports of texting being involved then they have deemed it not a big problem and do not penalize drivers who text while driving. Too long a sentence that was. But if you think about it, a car is a lethal weapon, you can kill someone if you have a bad accident from lack of concentration while talking on the cell phone, texting, chatting even with a friend in the car. You need to be fully aware of what you are doing and in control of your vehicle. People get too caught up in instant communication, your life and other lives are more important in my opinion. Text when you get home. Take it easy.

I wonder if they did a study to see who these driving texters are, what states they would be in, what ages and so on.

...Hey, doubt if they would go that far unless it was a part of the accideunt report. But for sure if there reports show a lot of people regardless of age texting and they determine that there are too many with those circumstances, then I would think that that state would consider some kind of penalty. That may be how motorcyclists were compelled to wear helmets if they are?? Take care.

I believe it's a NO NO for anyone to text while driving because it takes your mind, your concentration and your eyes off the road when you should be paying more attention to it. I don't think we need any scientific evidence to see why we shouldn't text and drive at the same time. A survey would probably confirm this to be all true.

Maybe as time goes on, people have less common sense.

People have different opinions on texting while driving. But the bottom line is, it is dangerous. So it should always be prohibited.

I use to so this and yes guilty as charged, but it has been quite some time that I no longer do it. It is too dangerous and what can't wait until I get to my destination. This reminds about 1 month ago where a very young, 29 year old plastic surgeon killed himself as he was sending a tweet while driving. Oh my God what could be so important the he had to send a tweet. Unfortunately he killed himself and did not kill anyone else in the process. Wow! I still cannot get over this.

Yes i totally agree with you! People shouldn't be allowed to text while driving. And this i believe that this is the main reason for half the accidents occurring worldwide these days. People should pay more attention to traffic and signals rather than cells and phones. It's sad to know that people are so addicted to cell phones that even while driving they text or message or call someone. They should completely punish such idiots. The policemen in our country hardly care about anything much. They stop someone only when they think that that person is rich so that he/she can give them a large bribe. Hard to find honest men these days! Cheers!

To my knowledge, a number of states have banned that messaging while driving. I think it is a good idea. It should be banned, because texting teens not only teens but even some other parents and people are putting their lives and other innocent lives in danger on the roads, highways, and even in school zone. Texting causes a "distraction" whether it is not paying attention to the road ahead, speeding above the limits, not paying attention to traffic lights and speeding. People should know better than the text or play will their cellphones while driving. It should be a common sense. it's becoming a real problem, and I think this law should apply to everyone in the country and to make it federal law. I see no disadvantages of it becoming a federal law, as it should apply to every state and should be common sense when it comes to driving, putting you and other people in danger.

Yes, it should be a federal law. If that federal law is not followed, take away the car and see if that works.

Your are right about age not making a difference. I am 53 and I know I could be distracted to the point of an accident by texting. I think people should be grateful that they can still talk on the cell phone while driving. Be content with that!

Hi, Yes. Texting while driving is really dangerous thing because it will cause accidents. Here in the Philippines, it's one of the common reasons why there are some vehicular accidents. Same goes for talking to someone on your phone while driving. It doesn't have to be the law because I believe that it's common sense already. That texting while driving is prone to accidents. It diverts the attention of the driver. But some of us are stubborn alright. There are many ways to do it like when an important text/call arrives and you need to reply it, you could just pull over your car in a safe place and respond to that important message.

I don’t like to texting on mobiles when I drives a car. I think it is a big reason for accidents. So I always careful about this. And when I think it is really need of texting so someone on mobile then I stop my car and park it aside of the road then I like to texting.
