Is it a human nature not to feel contentment?

Philippines

I want this. I want that. When I get this, I want another one later on. Why? Why we human could not get contented to the things around us? Sometimes I think about this. I want to solve this problem even to myself. There were times that it seemed I could not find myself contented to something… Not until I read one article specifying about this. “Appreciate every little thing you have.” So I started to do that, and now I feel the satisfaction, the contentment… I also try to consider my less fortunate fellows would dream of the things I have, so I must be happy I got it. I am human of course so somehow I may think again of the old thinking—wanting things, that’s why almost everyday I evaluate myself… How about you guys? I want to know your side… please share.

It is human nature too be greedy and not to be satisfied with less than what we want in life. I don't want anything in life as it can be a pain to keep up. Here we have a saying. "Living up to the Jone's" Which means, you will always want more than your neighbor as you feel you are better than they are. We always want more and we always want things to change. But we never sit down and think why it has to change and why we want more. No one will ever be satisfied with what they have. TATA.

Hi primeaque, yes, it is a saying that it is a human nature not to feel contentment. Just like asking why is happiness so difficult to find? And like the usual response to this - Happiness depends on how you look at things. You're right...why can't we see those less fortunate? If we analyze our daily activities, we did so much effort to earn not just to live, but to have a more wealthy living. And yet, we're not satisfied for it usually did not commensurate our effort. So happiness is aloof

Wonderful sharing my friend. Happiness goes after contentment. And yes, our happiness depends on how we look and value things we got. So our happiness would have different values. My happiness may not yours. But the point there is, it is not necessary to put much value to it. Contentment should not be in the degree very hard to reach. . . Because we can count every little thing and be blessed with it. Like the less fortunate one, see, if they can find that meal, even not enough, they would surely think heaven for it wearing their best smiles. All humans should be thankful and contented. . . For every little things, as blessings would shower us if we will learn to truly appreciate. God bless and happy mylotting:-);-)

But if we see those simple people having a simple life, they can smile despite of poverty they're going through. Because they appreciate what they have. They're contented for what they have without looking what other people have and without asking why they don't have this and that. For me, if we know for ourselves that we did our best for something and it did not work, it only means that what we have is what is given for us. And we always have to be thankful. Maybe acceptance and appreciation that matters.

it seems like the strive to want more, have more, and conquer more is definitely the characteristic of society and more so business. its definitely whats brought on this economic mess that's transpired over the past 3 years. i'm not saying thats a bad thing. also it does however seem people are bound to find a problem about something and want to fix it even when things are going really good.

Nice idea my friend. The improvements we have today is brought about by never ending change and dreams. It is not bad. Yet one thing, all of us must see to it that along this process, we never created a worst nightmare that we might also suffer in the end.:-(

Nobody can have total contentment. As time changes, so are the things that moves us. It may be love, money, or other materials that we inevitably wish that we have.

i think there is just a wierd sychologic thing that just keeps us wanting the same things. just as it is human nature for many other thing. you cant really explain it but it is great and yet so cruel.

Yes its great when its makes you want to learn more or acquire more knowledge but cruel when you get greedy with money.

I agree with both of you, and momo you have metioned an important point: it is not always bad to want more, as long as it is for good things or good purpose, it would just become bad when we become gredy and self-centered for certain things. Thank you for the sharing!

I have to agree with saphy. It's an never ending nature for us. From food to material things - even to our expectations for other people around us. I, example. Even though I am able to live in a good place, able to eat three times a day but I am never contented. I always want more, like to live more comfortably. But it will always depend on the effort that I gave. So let's see if I can keep up with my expectations. lol

You are right my friend, I have still have my own dreams too even I got a work, meal, bed and all those things... but as long as we do this and want this, we never have taken advantage to others, as long as we have exerted our effort and do things honestly, then I could see no problem... thanks for the nice sharing...

I am content with the places I have traveled to. My travel photos are very special to me and I treasure them. However there are plenty more places on my travel wish list. I wrote all the things I was pleased with in my life and there were many things that I have. I have three children, two dogs, a bungalow, a car, furniture, clothes, photos, pictures and ornaments. I have enough food to drink and safe drinking water comes out of my kitchen tap. On my travels in poor countries I have seen very poor people like in Indonesia. I think it would be good if every person in the world "appreciated every little thing" that they have got. I know many people that are not contented and always want more more more. It is lovely to feel satisfied with all that I have. I feel fairly contented now that I have fulfilled what I wanted to do in my life. If I didn't have much I hope I would appreciate every little thing.

Hi my friend maxima. You know what, i am sad to know why people are not equal. Why there are rich and poor. I just realize that there are several rich people who became rich because they are blessed. Why? Because they are always thankful to all the things they got, so blessing are pouring to them generously, like you. Actually, this thing is very broad, if we are going to look at this in detail... But now, let us focus on the less fortunates perception, well to say get contented of what you have in life doesnt also mean to stay where and what you are. Of course, they must learn how to make a remedy for the situation, and how they will make themselves happy and satisfied, is to count every little things they found or receive along their journey. Thank you my friend and happy mylotting:-);-)

Yes. As a man always dissatisfied with what we have. As long as we can never be grateful we will never be satisfied. I always try to always be thankful with what I have now. So I can feel the satisfaction, of which I have now.

yes that is true the only way to make ourselves contented is to learn how to be thankful to every little things we have... when we can achieve that then we can finally leave a happy an unstressful life, since that being not contented can give a lot of stress... happy mylotting.

We can blame a lot of things in our lives on human nature. if we don't feel we have contentment in our lives, it is for a reason. it usually means we are not satisifed with the path that life is leading us on. Sometimes it is something we can control. other times it is not.

I got your point. My point in posting this topic doesnt imply that those street people should stay where they are. They must find way to get themselves out from those miseries. But all of us, not just them must have a mind set that every little along the way is a blessing, and we should be thankful to it and somehow feel contented, it is a good way though to let more blessings and good fortunes to poor in. . . Happy mylotting.

It's nice to know that you've learned to appreciate even small things. That alone can give you contentment in life. Be happy and be contented with what you have. Never ask for more. By living that way, you would not think of wanting another things after owning some.

Thank you, and about asking for more, of course all of us can ask for more, it is apart from the case of being not contented though, because all of us have dreams in life, and we should make it happen by time... the lesson here is, we should learn to appreciate every blessings and count it as gift from heaven. Thanks for the nice sharing and happy mylotting.

I think it is somewhat related to the inner peace we have. The more we have it the more contented we should be. And when we are contented within we tend to see the world from a different perception and not one based on material things solely. And how we find peace within is totally up to the individual. Some find it in meditation while others find it in their religious beliefs and practice.

I must agree with you my friend. Yes, contentment perhaps vary on people's perception, on how they see things. When one is too worldly, then he could not get contented with only few things. I admire those spiritual groups, they are more on lookings things temporary, so they are not on the concentration of acquiring it. Thank you for the sharing.

Hi! I'm always happy with what I have. If I'd be given more, why not? Some people just don't get it. They keep on striving so hard they missed out on a lot of things and when they reached their goal their not happy any more. The way to do it is to find contentment in everything that you do and happiness will just follow.

hi prime ther may be some truth to that in small children but in us adults we should try to find contentment as we are mature and have the brain power to assure ourselves we can be contented with what we have as opposed to being sour about all we do not have. I know from all our mylotters scattered all over this globe that I am much better off than some families who live with no running water and no electricity. I do not gloat over this fact at all as my heart goes out to them, but it makes me thank my God for what I do have aNd maKes me even more content. I also thing of ways to help those who do not have these amenities we take forgranted.

Hi hatley thank you for this sharing. You know, last year when I had worked with the social welfare program of our national government I had able to reflect many things in life. There were so many less fortunate folks of ours that I had interviewed and they had shared their lives to me and my colleagues. Some of them had no permanent shelters, a small house with no ropes, others could not even ate complete meals a day, children could not able to go to school... there life portrayed miseries... but you know what, they remain still with life and happy! They knew how to say thanks to every little things they got... and when that jon ended, I've learned a lot og things about life...

I am a woman so I like to buy things like clothes, bags and shoes. But my earnings are very much limited so I keep that in mind when I shop for more of the things I love. Somehow that prevents me from using the credit card to buy these things so I am still in control of my finances. You are in the right path thinking of the less fortunate. But for me, I only think of my own financial side which will definitely deplete if I spend more than I can afford. I guess I love money the most!

I love what you are doing though, I should have mention this thing too, our financial capacity, well somehow people tend to spend money beyond their budgets that is why they are in debt now, and honestly I was extravagant before, I never look into my capacity that was why even my allowance for school were spentr for some personal things... thanks for this nice sharing and thoughts!
